TL;DR
- There are three Mysterious Energy puzzles in The Witchwoods — each gives an Abyss Artifact, fast travel point, or both
- Puzzle 1: Abyss Nexus southwest of the Witch’s House — just step on the plate to activate it
- Puzzle 2: Azure Moon Labyrinth under Phoniel Ranch — requires visiting Pororin Village to decode the symbol solution
- Puzzle 3: Duskwood Hill Ruins north of Phoniel Ranch — a five-pillar alignment puzzle using the Stab skill
- All three unlock fast travel and help build your skill tree via Abyss Artifacts
- Reset any messed-up puzzle by fast travelling out of the area and returning
Mysterious Energy markers in Crimson Desert show up on your map as grey fogged zones with a question mark. Most players ignore them early on — but each one hides either an Abyss Nexus fast travel point or an Abyss Cresset puzzle that rewards an Abyss Artifact (a free skill point).
The Witchwoods, located east of Hernand, has three of them. One is simple. One is a short dungeon. One is a tricky mechanical puzzle that trips up almost everyone the first time.
This guide covers all three — exact locations, how to enter, and step-by-step solutions.
For more on what Mysterious Energy actually is and how it fits into exploration, see our Crimson Desert Mysterious Energy explained guide. For every Ancient Ruins puzzle across the whole game, our Crimson Desert Duskwood Ancient Ruins puzzle guide has you covered too.
What Are Mysterious Energy Puzzles?
Every Mysterious Energy marker in Crimson Desert points to one of two things:
Abyss Nexus — A pressure plate on the ground. Step on it to activate it as a permanent fast travel point. No puzzle required.
Abyss Cresset — A glowing pedestal tied to an Ancient Ruins challenge. You must solve a puzzle first. Once cleared, it activates as a fast travel point and you receive an Abyss Artifact — which is a skill point for your talent tree.
The Witchwoods has one Nexus and two Cresset puzzles. All three are worth doing as early as possible since the fast travel points alone save significant time in this region.
Puzzle 1: Abyss Nexus — Southwest of the Witch’s House (Alfonso Estate)
Type: Abyss Nexus (no puzzle required)

Location: The Nexus sits just southwest of the Witch’s House on the Alfonso Estate. If you are standing at the front of the Witch’s home, walk up the hill directly behind it. The Nexus plate is easy to spot from the hilltop.

If you need a map reference, look for where the text reads “The Witchwoods” on the world map, then travel slightly north of where the letter “E” sits in the word “THE.”
How to activate: Simply walk up to the glowing plate and stand on it. That is all. It registers as a fast travel point immediately and the Mysterious Energy marker on your map disappears.
This is the fastest and easiest of the three. Get it done first since it gives you an instant warp point in the middle of the Witchwoods region.
Puzzle 2: Azure Moon Labyrinth — Phoniel Ranch (Under the Witch’s House Area)
Type: Abyss Cresset — Ancient Ruins puzzle dungeon

Location: The labyrinth is entirely underground. The entrance is not at the cave wall you might spot near the Witch’s House — that is actually the exit. To enter correctly:

- Head to Phoniel Ranch, located northeast of the Witch’s House, up the hill
- Clear any bandits in the area
- Find a small wooden shed at the back of the ranch
- Inside the shed is a hidden ladder leading underground
- Follow the path down — watch out for flame jet traps and spiked pits; hug the left wall and climb along the ledges to avoid damage
- Pull the lever to open the gate into the puzzle chamber
The Puzzle: Symbol Wall
Inside the chamber you will find a room with symbol-carved stone slabs on two walls — left and right. There is also a mural on the wall before the puzzle room. That mural shows a map of a village with five marked trees. This is your clue. The village is Pororin Village, located east of the House of Healing in Hernand.
You cannot guess the correct symbols without visiting Pororin Village first. If you have not unlocked the village yet, you need to complete the Trembling Woods faction quest under the Pororin Forest Guardian questline. Our guide on the Crimson Desert Trembling Woods puzzle solution can help.
Once you have access to Pororin Village, find the five marked trees around the forest. Each tree has a unique glyph painted on it. Those glyphs tell you exactly which slabs to press in the labyrinth.
The Solution (Skip the Village Trip)
If you just want the answer without travelling to Pororin Village, here it is:
Right wall (left to right):
- Press the 1st symbol — Letter F
- Press the 3rd symbol — Letter E with a vertical bar
- Press the 4th symbol — (activates with the others)
Left wall (left to right):
- Press the 1st symbol — Letter P with three horizontal bars
- Press the 3rd symbol — Letter P with one horizontal bar
Push each slab using Force Palm or Force Current. You must press exactly five symbols in total. The order does not matter. If you press the wrong slab or too many, the puzzle resets automatically.
Once all five correct symbols are pushed in, the gate on the south side of the room unlocks. Head through to claim the Abyss Artifact and activate the Abyss Cresset fast travel point.
Rewards:
- Abyss Cresset (fast travel point)
- Abyss Artifact (skill point)
- Memory of Tide — reveals the locations of eight hidden caves in the Alfonso Estate region of Hernand
The Memory of Tide is arguably the most useful reward here if you are doing a thorough exploration run.

Puzzle 3: Duskwood Hill Ruins — North of Phoniel Ranch
Type: Abyss Cresset — Five-pillar alignment puzzle

Location: Travel directly north of Phoniel Ranch. You are heading to the landmass separated by two large rivers in northern Witchwoods — southeast of Warspike Spearmaker. In the forest you will find large ruins with five tall stone pillars, a small round central pedestal (the capstan), and a stone altar at the base of the stairs. The Mysterious Energy marker on your map labels this spot.

Skills Required
Before you can interact with the puzzle you need two abilities:
- Blinding Flash — to burn the vines off the mechanism
- Stab Skill — to insert your sword into the capstan holes and rotate the pillars
Controls for Stab Skill:
- PlayStation: R1 + Triangle
- Xbox: RB + Y
- PC: Shift + Right Click
Step 1: Clear the Vines
The pillars and central capstan are covered in vines when you first arrive. You must burn them off before the mechanism works.
Use Blinding Flash (hold L1 + R1 on PlayStation / LB + RB on Xbox / Ctrl + Left Click on PC) and direct the focused light at the vines. Alternatively, light an arrow on fire using one of the nearby braziers and shoot the vines.
If the vines disappear but the pillars still do not respond, save your game, fast travel away, and come back. The puzzle should reset cleanly on return.
Important: Save before you start tinkering. If you move the pillars to wrong positions mid-attempt, the easiest fix is to fast travel out of the area and return — the puzzle resets to its default state.
Understanding the Mechanism
The central capstan has four holes (sockets). Stabbing each socket controls a different group of pillars:
- Socket 1 (Hole closest to pillars): Raises/lowers Pillars 3, 4, and 5
- Socket 2: Raises/lowers Pillars 2 and 4
- Socket 3 (Southeast side when facing pillars): Raises/lowers Pillars 2, 3, and 4
- Socket 4 (Bottom right corner): Raises/lowers Pillars 2 and 5
The pillars are numbered 1 to 5 from left to right. Pillar 1 is fixed and cannot be moved. It is your height reference — every other pillar needs to match it.
Once a pillar reaches the correct height, it glows yellow. When all five are aligned, they all glow blue and the Abyss Cresset appears.
Step-by-Step Solution
Step 1: Stab Socket 1 (the hole closest to the pillars — controls Pillars 3, 4, and 5). Turn it half a segment clockwise. Pillars 3, 4, and 5 should now be halfway between their starting height and Pillar 1’s height. Do not fully align them yet.
Step 2: Stab Socket 3 (southeast side when facing the pillars — controls Pillars 2, 3, and 4). Turn it half a segment clockwise. After this move, Pillars 3 and 4 should now align with Pillar 1 and glow yellow. Pillar 2 will be slightly above Pillar 1, and Pillar 5 will be at the same level as Pillar 2.
Step 3: Stab Socket 4 (bottom right corner — controls Pillars 2 and 5). Turn it half a segment clockwise. Pillars 2 and 5 will lower into alignment with the others.
All five pillars now match the height of Pillar 1. They all glow blue. The Abyss Cresset activates and you can collect the Abyss Artifact.
If the pillars do not align perfectly: They will snap to position automatically if they are close enough. Do not over-rotate — a half segment per step is all that is needed. If something looks off, fast travel out and reset.
Reward:
- Abyss Cresset (fast travel point)
- Abyss Artifact (skill point)
