TL;DR
- There are two quests with nearly identical names — this guide covers Quest 134: The Cloister of Enlightenment (with “The”) at the end of Chapter 9
- Requires completing all 5 Chapter 9 subchapters first
- Three stone doors require 7+ Health, 5+ Spirit, and 5+ Stamina skill points respectively
- After passing the doors, the Master Du boss fight begins in Quest 135: The Sage of the Desert
- Master Du uses a Longsword — parry his attacks, then land 4 heavy attacks in the opening
- Do not hide behind pillars during lasers — they shoot straight through the stone
- Stand close to Master Du during Phase 2 lasers — staying near him makes the beams miss
- Reward after the fight (New Perspectives quest): Karmic Pulse Abyss Gear
Important — Two Quests Share Almost the Same Name
Before you start, know this: there are two different quests in Chapter 9 that share nearly identical names.
- Quest 120: Cloister of Enlightenment — an earlier quest involving purifying golden statues with Focused Force Palm
- Quest 134: The Cloister of Enlightenment — the skill-check door quest covered in this guide (note the “The” at the start)
This guide covers Quest 134 — the one where you walk into stone doors to prove your strength, spirit, and vitality. If you’re not seeing the three circular doors, you may be on Quest 120 instead.

When Does This Quest Unlock?
The Cloister of Enlightenment (Quest 134) only unlocks after you’ve completed all five Chapter 9 subchapters:
- The Calling
- Shattered Ties (includes Shackles of Fate — removing the spear from the dragon’s back)
- Thinning Blade (includes Spire of the Sun puzzle)
- Six Pensive Statues and the Evil Spirit (includes T’rukan fight)
- Veiled Witch
Once all five are done, Quest 134 and then the Master Du fight (Quest 135: The Sage of the Desert) become available.
How to Open the Three Cloister of Enlightenment Doors
Each circular stone door is a passive skill check on your Health, Spirit, and Stamina skill point investments. Walk into the door — if you have enough points, it opens. No interaction prompt needed.
If you’re short on any stat, you can use Faded Abyss Artifacts to respec your skill points. See our how to respec in Crimson Desert guide for the full process.
Important: If you used Faded Abyss Artifacts to temporarily hit the required numbers just to open the doors, re-invest your points back into your preferred build before going through the final door. The Master Du fight starts immediately after.
Door 1 — Demonstrate Strength
Walk into the first circular stone door. You need 7 or more points in Health in your skill tree to pass.

Door 2 — Demonstrate Spirit
Walk into the second circular stone door. You need 5 or more points in Spirit in your skill tree to pass.

Door 3 — Demonstrate Vitality
Walk into the third circular stone door. You need 5 or more points in Stamina in your skill tree to pass.

Prepare Before the Final Door
Stock up before going through Door 3. The Master Du fight begins immediately on the other side with no chance to go back.
- 100+ Grilled Meat — you can eat every 2 seconds in combat. See our best healing food guide
- Several Palmar Pills — Master Du’s Phase 2 lasers can one-shot you. A Palmar Pill lets you revive on the spot and keep fighting. See how to get and use Palmar Pills
- Rebuild your preferred skill loadout if you respecced to open the doors
How to Beat Master Du — Phase 1
The fight takes place in a smoke-filled circular arena with pillars around the edges. Master Du fights with a Longsword and is aggressive from the start.

Core attack loop:
- Hold L3+R3 (LS+RS / Left Click+Right Click) to enter Focus Level 3. This slows time and regenerates Spirit, giving you clear windows to read Master Du’s attacks.
- When Master Du swings his longsword, press L1 / LB / Ctrl to parry just before the attack lands. A successful parry stuns him briefly.
- In the stun window, land 4 heavy attacks (R2 / RT / Right Click) followed by a light attack combo. When you land heavy attacks, Master Du is typically locked in place while you deal damage.
- Follow up with Blinding Flash (L1+R1 / LB+RB / Ctrl+Left Click) and hold R2 for a Blinding Flash Finisher to build stun and deal bonus damage.
- Alternatively, use L1+R2 for a Slash Attack.
- Repeat this loop until Phase 2 begins.

Master Du Phase 1 — All Attacks and How to Counter Them
Longsword Stabs and Swings — Master Du’s standard attacks with his longsword. These can all be parried. Time your L1 just before impact.
Pillar Dive-Bomb — Master Du jumps onto the pillars around the arena and rapidly dashes between them. Do not try to track him. Enter Focus (L3+R3) to slow time and use that window to heal up fully. As soon as he stops jumping between pillars, there’s a short delay before he dives. When you see him land on the final pillar, immediately dodge sideways repeatedly to avoid the dive. Watch for the red glint above Kliff — that’s the exact moment to roll.
Green Laser Beam — Master Du raises his palm and charges an instant-kill green laser. This happens quickly and deals lethal damage regardless of HP. Dodge the moment his palm raises forward. Do not block — it won’t work. In Phase 1, he fires this once.
How to Beat Awakened Master Du — Phase 2
When Master Du’s first HP bar is depleted, he becomes significantly faster and more aggressive.
Same core strategy applies — parry his longsword attacks, land 4 heavy attacks, use Focus to manage his pillar phase. The key differences are:
- His combos are longer and faster
- The pillar dive-bomb is much quicker — use Focus and heal during it, same as Phase 1
- His green laser now fires 4 to 5 times consecutively
Critical Phase 2 tip: The Phase 2 lasers shoot straight through the pillars. You cannot use them as cover. Dodging the beams normally can be difficult. The most reliable method: stand directly on top of Master Du and stay as close as possible when he starts firing. At this range, the beams cannot accurately hit you.
Spirit recovery: When your Spirit runs low and you can’t use skills, hold L3+R3 to restore Spirit. If you need a moment to breathe, position yourself behind a pillar to recover before re-engaging.
What Happens After the Master Du Fight?
Beating Master Du finishes Quest 135: The Sage of the Desert. A cutscene plays and Master Du commands you to follow him.
After the fight, you move into Quest 136: New Perspectives, which rewards Karmic Pulse — an Abyss Gear item.
