Shadow Wingdrop in Genshin Impact is an aerial movement technique used inside the Shadow Realm, the brand-new third-person shooter zone introduced in Version 7.0 with Snezhnaya. It combines the jump mechanic with a downward shooting angle, letting you fire on enemies below while airborne. It sounds tricky at first, but once you understand how the Shadow Realm’s movement system works, the Wingdrop becomes a natural part of how you fight.
TL;DR
- Shadow Wingdrop is an aerial downward shooting technique in the Shadow Realm TPS mode.
- It is only available inside Shadow Realm zones in Snezhnaya, exclusive to Version 7.0 and later.
- You need the Eye of Graeae gadget and access to Snezhnaya to enter the Shadow Realm.
- Combine it with Frag Crystals and elemental firearms for maximum damage.
- It works best with the Cryo Rifle for precise airborne targeting.
What Is the Shadow Wingdrop in Genshin Impact?
The Shadow Wingdrop is a technique tied to Genshin Impact’s new Shadow Realm TPS (Third-Person Shooter) mode. This mode was added in Version 7.0: Everwinter Without Mercy, which launched Snezhnaya, the seventh and final nation of Teyvat.
Inside the Shadow Realm, the camera shifts to a third-person over-the-shoulder perspective and the Traveler equips a firearm. You can perform a range of combat and movement actions that do not exist in normal Genshin Impact gameplay. The Shadow Wingdrop is one of these — it uses the jump animation to gain vertical height, then angles shots downward toward grounded enemies while airborne.
It is similar in concept to a plunging attack from classic Genshin combat, but instead of a melee strike, you are firing your equipped firearm downward at enemies beneath you. It gives you a height advantage, makes you a harder target to hit, and opens angles on enemies hiding behind low cover.

How to Unlock the Shadow Realm
Before you can use the Shadow Wingdrop, you need access to the Shadow Realm itself. Here is what you need to do.
Step 1 – Reach Snezhnaya
Complete Archon Quest Prologue: Act III – Song of the Dragon and Freedom. This unlocks a Teleport Waypoint in Snezhnaya automatically. You do not need to walk through every previous region. Just completing the Mondstadt Archon Quest is enough to fast-travel straight in.
Step 2 – Obtain the Eye of Graeae
When you first arrive in Snezhnaya, you receive the Eye of Graeae gadget. This is Snezhnaya’s main exploration tool. It does several things:
- Stores Kresnik Energy to keep the Bitter Cold gauge from filling up and draining your HP
- Creates Prime Ice Constructs for puzzle solving and traversal
- Summons your personal train car for fast travel between stations
- Activates the Shadow Realm combat mode when you enter a Shadow Realm zone
You do not need to do anything special to get it. It is handed to you as part of your first journey into Snezhnaya.
Step 3 – Enter a Shadow Realm Zone
Shadow Realms are specific hidden zones scattered across Snezhnaya. They are described as mysterious fractures of reality where light, wind, and even elemental energy come to a standstill. The Heavenly Principles have no gaze here — normal rules do not apply.
When you walk into a Shadow Realm zone, the Eye of Graeae activates automatically. The camera shifts to a third-person perspective and the Traveler puts on the Night Hunt in Snow outfit. A firearm appears in your hands. You are now in TPS mode and ready to fight.

How to Perform the Shadow Wingdrop
Once you are inside a Shadow Realm with a firearm equipped, performing the Wingdrop is straightforward.
Step 1 – Get Airborne
Press the jump button to leap into the air. In the Shadow Realm’s TPS mode, the jump height is generous. You can also use elevated terrain, crates, broken structures, or ice platforms to gain extra height before jumping. The higher you start, the more time you have to aim downward during the drop.
You can also use the grappling hook mechanic — available in the Shadow Realm — to launch yourself upward quickly. Fire the grappling hook at a high anchor point, let it pull you up, then release and transition into the Wingdrop as you begin to fall.
Step 2 – Aim Downward While Falling
After jumping, tilt your camera or aim input downward toward the enemy or group of enemies below you. Switch to Aiming Mode if you have not already — this tightens your crosshair and gives you better precision while airborne.
The Cryo Rifle works best for this technique because it is a precision weapon. Lining up a clean aerial shot with it is easier than with the Electro Rifle’s auto-lock or the grenade launcher’s arc.
Step 3 – Fire During the Descent
As you fall, fire your weapon at the enemies below. You can get off multiple shots depending on how much height you had. The Wingdrop gives you a brief window where enemies cannot easily return fire because they are not elevated. Use this window to deal your damage before you land.
When you land, immediately transition into a slide or take cover to reset your position. Do not stand in the open after landing — the Wingdrop is meant to be a burst of aerial aggression, not a sustained exposed position.
Step 4 – Combine With Frag Crystals for Maximum Effect
While airborne, you can also throw Frag Crystals — the elemental grenades available in the Shadow Realm. These come in Pyro, Electro, Cryo, and Hydro types. Throwing a Frag Crystal downward during a Wingdrop lets you set up elemental reactions before you land.
For example, throw a Hydro Frag Crystal down, then follow up with Cryo shots from your rifle as you fall. This triggers a Freeze reaction on enemies below, locking them in place so they cannot dodge or shoot back while you descend and land.

Shadow Realm Firearms and Which Works Best for the Wingdrop
There are three types of firearms in the Shadow Realm TPS mode. Each has different strengths in the Wingdrop scenario.
Cryo Rifle – Best for Wingdrop
The Cryo Rifle is a precision weapon designed for accurate single-target shots. It is the first firearm you receive when entering the Shadow Realm — your starting gun is Shatanaya’s Frostsilver, a Cryo assault rifle. For the Wingdrop, the Cryo Rifle is the top choice because:
- You can aim and place shots accurately while airborne
- Cryo application can trigger Stellar-Conduct (Cryo + Electro) or Freeze reactions with Hydro Frag Crystals
- Precision shots deal strong single-target burst damage during the descent window
Electro Rifle – Situational
The Electro Rifle has an automatic target lock-on system. It continuously fires at locked targets without requiring precise manual aiming. During a Wingdrop, the auto-lock can be useful against fast-moving enemies who are hard to manually aim at while falling. However, its damage per shot is lower than the Cryo Rifle, making it less effective for quick burst damage from the air.
Grenade Launcher – AoE Option
The Grenade Launcher fires projectiles with a travel arc that deal massive AoE elemental damage. It can hit Pyro, Hydro, or Cryo depending on its configuration. During a Wingdrop, the grenade launcher is excellent for groups of enemies clustered below you. The downward angle from a jump makes arcing a grenade into a group much easier than firing from ground level.
Shadow Realm Movement Mechanics Explained
The Wingdrop does not exist in isolation. It is part of a full suite of TPS movement mechanics in the Shadow Realm. Understanding all of them helps you use the Wingdrop more effectively.
Cover System
Shadow Realm zones have physical cover objects — crates, ice walls, barriers, and structural elements you can duck behind to block incoming fire. Press against cover to hide. Peeking out to take shots while protected is the core loop of the Shadow Realm’s ground combat. The Wingdrop works as a way to break out of this ground-level defensive posture and attack from above when it is safe to do so.
Slide
You can sprint and then slide across the ground to move quickly while presenting a smaller target. Sliding is useful for repositioning after a Wingdrop landing, getting to cover fast, or closing distance on enemies. On some surfaces in the Shadow Realm, sliding also lets you move under obstacles you cannot vault over.
Vault
You can vault over obstacles in your path. Vaulting over a barrier and immediately jumping into a Wingdrop is an effective combo — you leap over cover, gain height, and fire downward on the enemy group on the other side before they can react.
Grappling Hook
The grappling hook lets you quickly traverse the map by firing it at anchor points on walls, structures, or elevated terrain. It pulls you to the anchor point at speed. Using the grappling hook to reach a high point and then immediately performing a Wingdrop is one of the most aggressive plays available in the Shadow Realm.
Aim Assist and Target Snapping
For players who are not experienced with shooter games, the Shadow Realm includes several accessibility options:
- Aim Assist – helps pull your crosshair toward enemies automatically
- Auto Snapping – snaps your aim to targets both while aiming and while firing
- Crosshair Slowdown – slows your crosshair movement when passing over a target, making it easier to stop on them
- Automatic Aiming Mode Switch – automatically enters Aiming Mode when you start firing
Turn on Aim Assist if you are having trouble landing Wingdrop shots during the fall. It gives you a bit more forgiveness on the aerial angle.
How to Unlock More Firearms for Better Wingdrop Performance
You start with Shatanaya’s Frostsilver, a Cryo assault rifle. Additional firearms are unlocked at a location called The Hunter’s Cabin inside Snezhnaya. You need to meet certain exploration and quest requirements to receive weapon blueprints there.
Firearm accessories can also be found while exploring Snezhnaya normally. These accessories slot into your firearms and change their stats or behaviour — improving accuracy, increasing magazine size, or adding secondary effects. Accessories that improve stability or reduce recoil are especially useful for the Wingdrop, as they help you keep shots on target while your character is moving downward through the air.
Druzhna also runs regular training exercises inside the Shadow Realm environment. Participating in these drills is a great way to practice the Wingdrop and other TPS techniques in a lower-stakes setting before taking on tougher Shadow Realm challenges.
Tips for Mastering the Shadow Wingdrop
Use High Ground Before Jumping
The Wingdrop works best when you start from as high as possible. Look for elevated terrain, stacked crates, or ice structures in the Shadow Realm zone before attempting it. The more height you have, the more time you spend airborne and the more shots you can fire during the descent.
Combine With Elemental Reactions
The Shadow Realm’s shooting gameplay is built around elemental reactions. Do not just fire generic shots during a Wingdrop. Set up a reaction before or during the technique. The Cryo Rifle applies Cryo; throw a Hydro Frag Crystal first to Freeze enemies on impact, or follow up with an Electro Frag Crystal to trigger Stellar-Conduct. Chain your element applications thoughtfully for maximum damage.
Land Near Cover
After the Wingdrop, you are briefly exposed on landing. Always be aware of where your nearest cover is before you jump. Land as close to cover as possible and immediately slide or dash into it. If you land in the open, enemies who survived the Wingdrop will immediately return fire.
Practice in Druzhna’s Training Exercises
The Shadow Realm has dedicated training exercises run by an NPC named Druzhna. These exercises are specifically designed to help players get comfortable with TPS mechanics including movement and shooting. Use them to practice the Wingdrop timing without worrying about dying to tough enemies while learning.
Adjust Aim Assist to Your Comfort Level
The Wingdrop requires aiming while moving downward, which can feel awkward if you are new to shooters. Do not be afraid to turn on Aim Assist and Auto Snapping until you get the feel for it. You can always turn these off later once your airborne aiming is confident.
Shadow Wingdrop in Different Shadow Realm Challenges
Open Battlefield Stages
Open battlefield stages have wide spaces with multiple enemies spread across the arena. These are ideal for the Wingdrop because there is room to jump, multiple targets below you, and enough space to land near cover after the technique. Use elevated terrain or the grappling hook to get airborne and pick off clustered groups with the grenade launcher during your descent.
Indoor Firefight Stages
Indoor stages are tighter and more claustrophobic. Ceiling height limits how useful the Wingdrop is in some areas, but stairwells, raised platforms, and multi-level structures still offer opportunities. Vault over a barrier to reach the upper level of a room, then use the Wingdrop to fire down on enemies on the lower level below.
Expedition Stages
Expedition stages in the Shadow Realm have a full story experience alongside the combat. These are longer and more involved. Use the Wingdrop when enemy groups bunch together or when you are clearing rooms sequentially. It saves time on larger groups and feels very satisfying in the story-heavy expedition format.
