TL;DR
- Always examine a recipe or blueprint first before selling or discarding it
- For books, open them and read the page with glowing blue text to properly learn it
- Once learned, the physical item has no further use — sell it or discard it freely
- Abyss Gear recipes sell for Silver; most other recipes are only worth Bronze and can just be discarded
- You can also gift unlearned recipes to shop vendors to build trust instead of selling
- If you accidentally sell an unlearned recipe, recover it from the Lost Storage Chest at Howling Hill Camp
- Discover new recipes by improvising at cooking stations — cook the same combo three times to permanently unlock it
Crimson Desert throws a lot at you. Recipes, blueprints, crafting manuals, and scrolls pile up fast. Your inventory space is limited from the start, and holding onto used recipes is one of the most common ways players waste slots they need for materials and gear.
This guide explains exactly what to do with every recipe and blueprint you pick up, how to read them correctly, when to sell versus discard, and where to find more recipes across Pywel. For a bigger picture on managing your inventory, also check our how to increase inventory space guide.

How to Learn a Recipe or Blueprint in Crimson Desert
Picking up a recipe is not enough. You have to actually read it before the knowledge registers.
For scrolls and parchments: Open your inventory, select the item, and press L1/LB to examine it. The recipe or blueprint is learned instantly.
For books: It is slightly different. After picking up a recipe book, equip it and use your Lantern on it. The book will open and display its pages. Turn to the page with the glowing blue text and interact with it. That is the moment the recipe gets permanently added to your collection. Simply picking the book up or opening it without finding the glowing page does not count.
Once a recipe is properly learned, it is permanently registered in your Knowledge menu. You will never need to re-learn it. The physical item sitting in your inventory is now just dead weight.
Should You Sell or Discard Learned Recipes?
Once you have learned a recipe, get rid of the physical item. It serves no further purpose. The question is whether to sell it or discard it.
Here is the simple rule:
- Abyss Gear recipes — Sell these. They are worth a few Silver Coins and are easy Silver for a couple of seconds of effort.
- Most cooking and alchemy recipes — These sell for only a few Bronze Coins. Discarding them saves time and is perfectly fine.
- Equipment crafting books — Check the sell price first. If it is a Silver value, sell it. If it is only Bronze, discard.
There are no downsides to selling a used recipe. The crafted items it taught you remain permanently unlocked. You can produce them as many times as you want at the appropriate crafting station. For tips on turning those crafted items into income, see our guide on how to make money fast in Crimson Desert.
Can You Gift Recipes to Vendors Instead?
Yes, and this is worth knowing. Rather than selling or discarding an unlearned recipe, you can gift it to a vendor to build trust with them.
Food recipes can be gifted to food-related shop vendors such as grocers and butchers. Crafting manuals for weapons and armor can be gifted to the equipment shop, tailor shop, or smithy. Gifting raises your trust level with that vendor, which unlocks better trade options and discounts over time.
This is only worth doing if you have not learned the recipe yet. Once you have read it, the item has no gifting value beyond its sell price. For more on building relationships with merchants, see our how to gain trust with merchants guide.

What If You Accidentally Sold an Unlearned Recipe?
It happens. If you sell a recipe before learning it, do not panic.
Head to the Lost Storage Chest at the Howling Hill Camp. Items you sell or lose accidentally are stored there temporarily. Retrieve the recipe, learn it properly, then sell it again. Our how to get lost loot guide walks through exactly how the Lost Storage system works.
Types of Recipes and Blueprints in Crimson Desert
Crimson Desert has several categories of recipes, each linked to a different crafting station:
Cooking Recipes — Teach you how to prepare food and drinks that restore health, Spirit, and grant temporary buffs. Cooked at campfires, cooking pots, and cauldrons. There are four food quality tiers: Modest, Basic, Filling, and Hearty. Adding extra ingredients when cooking upgrades the quality tier. For example, standard Grilled Meat restores 80 health, while the Hearty version restores 220.
Alchemy Recipes — Produce elixirs, potions, and pills at a Cauldron. Two early Cauldron locations to know: Shadow’s Whisper Cave northwest of Hernand, and a vacant building on the east side of Hernand Town marked by a mortar and pestle sign.
Equipment Blueprints — Cover weapons, armor, and accessories. There are 67 equipment crafting books scattered across Pywel, with 19 dedicated specifically to weapon types. These are crafted at blacksmiths and workshops.
Tool Blueprints — Cover utility items like the Kuku Pot, Kuku Pack, and related gadgets. See our how to craft the Kuku Pack guide for more on those.
Dye Recipes — Used to color your armor, weapons, and horse gear. See our how to dye armor, weapons, and horse gear guide for details.
Abyss Gear Recipes — These unlock powerful Abyss-infused equipment. They sell for Silver and are worth the extra step compared to discarding. See our full Crimson Desert accessories guide and unlock Witches Abyss Gears guide for context on the best Abyss gear to craft.
How to Discover Recipes Without Finding Them
You do not always need to find a physical recipe book. There are two other ways to permanently unlock recipes:
Improvisation at cooking stations — Select the Improvise option at any cooking pot or campfire and throw different ingredients together. If the combination produces a valid dish, cooking it successfully three times permanently adds it to your recipe collection. This works exactly the same as finding and reading the recipe. It is one of the best ways to fill out your cookbook early.
Research projects — Some alchemy and elixir formulas are locked behind the research system. At the Pororin Research Institute, completing the Pharmacological Research project (7 Silver, 9 hours) unlocks Plant Combination Research (120 Silver, 18 hours), which grants three powerful elixir formulas: Freya’s Elixir, Meliara’s Elixir, and Haiden’s Elixir. See our how to research guide for the full breakdown.
Where to Find More Recipes in Crimson Desert
Recipes are hidden all over Pywel. Here is where to look:
Buildings and interiors — The single best habit you can build is checking every building you enter. Recipe books sit on tables, shelves, and barrels inside houses, shops, caves, and enemy camps. Most players walk past dozens of recipes simply by not exploring indoor spaces.
Vendors and inns — Inns are the richest source of purchasable recipes. The Hernand Tavern sells Braised Fish, Pickled Vegetables, and Pan-Fried Rice Cakes. The Calphade Inn carries Meat Skewers, Pan-Fried Marinated Meat, and Braised Ribs. Specialty vendors also stock unique recipes not found in the world.
Key recipe locations to prioritize early:
- Palmar Pill recipe — Found in Shadow’s Whisper Cave, northwest of Hernand. This is arguably the most important early recipe. Palmar Pills revive you with 30% health after falling in combat. Get this as early as possible. See our how to get and use Palmar Pills guide for more.
- Chewy Rice Cakes — Found in the building behind the grocery shop in Hernand. Restores health and fills the Spirit bar.
- Wine recipe — Found in a house in Hernand. Restores a solid chunk of Stamina when consumed.
- Fish Skewers — Found in a drinking hall in Beighen.
- Battered Vegetables — Found in a small house in Beighen, on top of a barrel.
- Greymane Camp recipes — As you upgrade the Greymane Camp and recruit followers, additional recipes unlock. Lonnie the camp cook provides free Chewy Rice Cakes and Porridge each day once recruited. See our how to unlock ranch and farm guide for camp progression tips.
Quests — Some recipes only come from completing specific quests. The Renee’s Request sidequest rewards a butcher recipe from Renee in Hernand. See our how to complete Renee’s Request guide.
Caves and remote locations — Some of the most valuable recipes are tucked inside caves and abandoned structures away from main roads. Always investigate unusual buildings and narrow cave openings while exploring Pywel.
Tips for Managing Recipes and Inventory
- Learn first, sell second. Never sell a recipe without examining it first. A single button press earns you the knowledge permanently.
- Discard Bronze-value recipes on the spot. Do not let small-value scrolls pile up. Discard them immediately after learning and keep moving.
- Use your camp cook daily. Once Lonnie is recruited at the Greymane Camp, free food resets every in-game day. Checking back costs nothing.
- Improvise when you are short on ingredients. Even without a specific recipe, experimenting at the cooking pot can unlock new dishes for free.
- Buy recipes from inns when passing through towns. Most are cheap and the knowledge they provide is permanent. Even a Bronze-value recipe becomes free Silver once learned.
- Stock healing food constantly. Recipes are useless if you do not use them. See our how to cook the best healing food guide for the top food to prioritize.
