AION 2: What to Do With Old Gear — Extract, Transfer, Sync, or Keep

AION 2 What to Do With Old Gear

    TL;DR

    • You cannot sell old gear to NPC vendors in AION 2 — extraction is the right move for most pieces.
    • Extracting gear gives you Enhancement Stones, a transmog skin of that piece, and a small amount of Kinah.
    • Enhancement Stones you get back are equal to what you invested — extraction loses nothing on stones.
    • Gold and unique gear is the exception — never extract or sell it. Save it for the Syncing system.
    • Use Gear Transfer to carry your Enhancement level and Soul Binding onto your next piece before discarding old gear.
    • Dungeon duplicates are best handled through Substance Morph, which turns them into Potential Stones, Sync Stones, and other endgame materials.
    • Potential stats do NOT transfer to replacement gear — keep that in mind before you invest heavily in them.

Why You Cannot Just Sell Old Gear in AION 2

Most MMOs let you dump old equipment at an NPC for a handful of coins. AION 2 does not work that way. Gear in AION 2 cannot be sold to NPC vendors. If you try, you will quickly find there is no direct sell option on most gear pieces.

That is not a mistake. It is by design. The game wants you to recycle your old gear through its upgrade systems instead of letting you cash out for pocket change. The good news is that recycling properly gives you far more value than vendor selling ever would in a typical MMORPG. Once you know the four things you can do with old gear, inventory management in AION 2 becomes simple.

Those four things are: Extract it, Transfer its investment, Sync with it, or Substance Morph it. Which one applies depends on what kind of gear it is and how you upgraded it.

For the broader picture on managing your progression resources, see our AION 2: What to Farm First guide and our Endgame Guide.

Option 1 — Extract It (Default for White, Green, and Blue Gear)

Item Extraction is the main way to clear out old gear. It breaks the piece down and gives you back useful materials. The best part is that whatever Enhancement Stones you spent on that piece come back to you in full. Extraction does not punish you for upgrading gear you later replace.

AION 2 What to Do With Old Gear

How to Extract Gear in AION 2

    1. Open your inventory (the Cube).
    2. Click the gear piece you want to extract.
    3. In the gear description panel that appears, look for a beaker or flask icon at the bottom right.
    4. Hover over it to confirm the Extract command, then click it to open the Item Extraction window.
    5. The window shows exactly what you will receive before you confirm. Check it, then click Confirm.

Each extraction costs a small amount of Kina, but the amount is minor and not worth worrying about during normal play. You can also extract gear directly from the Enhancement menu if your inventory is full and you need stones quickly mid-session.

    What You Get From Extraction

    • Enhancement Stones: Equal to what you invested. Higher rarity gear returns more stones per piece.
    • A transmog skin: Whatever gear piece you extract becomes a cosmetic skin for that slot. Your fashion options grow every time you extract. The appearance is preserved even though the stats are gone.
    • Kinah: A small amount per extraction. More for higher rarity pieces.

This means there is basically no downside to enhancing gear while leveling. Enhance a green piece to push through a zone faster, then extract it when you replace it. Every Enhancement Stone comes back. The only cost is the small Kina fee to extract.

When to Hold Back on Extraction

Save the Enhancement Stones you collect from pre-level-45 gear. Do not spend them immediately on the next piece of leveling gear. The best use for Enhancement Stones is on your gear at level 45 and beyond, where investments matter for the long haul.

Option 2 — Keep Gold and Unique Gear for Syncing

Gold (yellow) and unique gear is the one category you should never extract and never sell. This is the single most common mistake new players make when cleaning out their inventory. Gold gear looks like junk once you have moved past it — but it is endgame material.

    What Is the Syncing System?

Syncing is how you re-roll the secondary stats on your equipped gear. If one of your main armor pieces has a weak or mismatched stat, you apply a gold gear piece to it. The Syncing system then replaces that weak stat with a randomized new one. The replacement stat is randomized, so you may need several gold pieces to land a good roll. Sometimes it re-rolls into the same stat with a different value. That is just how the RNG works.

Because Syncing can eat through many gold pieces to get your ideal stat setup, keeping every gold piece you come across is smart. Selling or extracting them now means buying or farming them back later at a much higher cost.

The rule is simple: if it is gold rarity or unique rarity and you are not wearing it, store it. Do not touch it.

Option 3 — Use Gear Transfer Before Discarding Upgraded Pieces

When a better piece drops, you do not need to start its progression from zero. Gear Transfer (also called Inheritance) lets you move some of what you built on your old piece onto the new one before discarding the old gear. The old piece is consumed in the process, but your investment partially carries forward.

    What Gear Transfer Carries Over

What You Built on the Old PieceDoes It Transfer?
    Enhancement levelYes
    Soul Binding / Soul ImprintingYes
    Potential statsNo
    ManastonesNo
    Theo StonesNo

The practical takeaway: push your Enhancement level and Soul Binding on gear even if you expect to replace it soon. Those layers follow you to the next piece. But do not invest heavily in Potential stats, Manastones, or Theo Stones on a piece you plan to replace — those layers reset on transfer and have to be rebuilt from scratch on the new item.

You find the Transfer option in the Enhancement menu at the top. Once you confirm, the old gear is gone and the new piece carries what transferred. There is no going back, so make sure you are actually ready to move on before you confirm.

Option 4 — Substance Morph Dungeon Duplicates

Dungeon gear is different from regular leveling drops. When you run the same dungeon repeatedly and get a piece you already own, do not just extract it on instinct. Dungeon duplicates are valuable through a different route: Substance Morph.

Substance Morph converts a dungeon gear piece into a batch of endgame crafting and upgrade materials instead of a single Enhancement Stone. The materials you get from morphing are more valuable than what extraction would give you from the same piece.

    What Substance Morph Produces

    • Kinah chests
    • Amplify Stones
    • Sync Stones
    • Potential Stones

The Potential Stones deserve special attention. Potential stats cannot transfer to a new piece during Gear Transfer. So every time you replace a piece with good Potential progress, you lose those stats. Using Substance Morph on dungeon duplicates gives you Potential Stones — which you can then use to rebuild that Potential layer on your new gear. This is the correct way to handle it.

Before you clean out your bags after a dungeon run, sort your gear into three groups:

    • Gear you are currently wearing
    • Gear set aside for future Gear Transfers
    • Duplicates flagged for Substance Morph

That sorting step takes seconds but prevents the very common mistake of accidentally morphing or extracting a piece you needed for an upcoming upgrade.

    What About the Auction House?

Some gear that is not bound can be listed on the Auction House and sold to other players for Kinah. If a piece of gear you replaced is unbound and reasonably valuable, listing it is worth trying before you extract it. Other players may need it for their own progression, and you get Kinah in return.

    abyss supply request
    abyss supply request

Additionally, Abyss Supply Requests are quests that ask for specific gear types. Turning gear in through Supply Requests can reward you with Enhancement Stones and Abyss Points. Abyss Points are worth accumulating early since they can be exchanged for higher-tier gear and Stigma Shards in the Abyss Shop.

For everything Stigma-related, see our AION 2 Stigma Guide.

Quick Decision Guide — Which Option to Use

    • White, green, or blue gear you have outgrown: Extract it. Get the Enhancement Stones, skin, and Kinah.
    • Gold or unique gear you are not wearing: Store it. Never extract or sell it. You need it for Syncing later.
    • Any gear with Enhancement level or Soul Binding before you replace it: Do Gear Transfer first, then the old piece is consumed and progress moves to the new one.
    • Dungeon gear duplicates: Substance Morph them for Potential Stones, Sync Stones, and crafting materials.
    • Unbound gear with market value: Try the Auction House first, then extract if it does not sell.
    • Gear with Supply Request quest requirements: Complete the Supply Request for Abyss Points before extracting.

What Not to Do With Old Gear

A few habits that waste resources and hurt your progression long-term:

    • Do not sell gold gear to NPC vendors or extract it. This is the most costly mistake you can make in AION 2’s gear system. Syncing needs gold pieces, and farming them back is far harder than just storing them now.
    • Do not extract dungeon duplicates without checking if Substance Morph gives better value. It almost always does.
    • Do not invest in Manastones, Theo Stones, or Potential stats on gear you plan to replace soon. Those layers do not transfer and the investment is lost.
    • Do not hoard Enhancement Stones during early leveling — but do not dump them all either. Save them for your level 45+ gear where they count.

How This Connects to Broader Progression

Managing old gear well is not just housekeeping. Every Enhancement Stone you recover is one more upgrade on your endgame set. Every gold piece you store is one fewer Sync attempt you have to farm for later. Every dungeon duplicate you morph instead of extract gives you Potential Stones that feed directly into your Combat Power.

This system is more player-friendly than it looks at first. AION 2 built extraction as a risk-free recycling loop, Gear Transfer as a way to protect your investment, and Substance Morph as a smart exit for dungeon duplicates. Once these three habits are in place, your inventory stays clean and your progression resources keep moving in the right direction.
