How to Get the Owl Pet in Crimson Desert

Owl pet in Crimson Desert only spawns between 10 PM and 4 AM in-game — here are all 6 locations, the favorite food, Sotdae setup tips, and how to tame it fast.

The Owl is one of the harder bird pets to tame in Crimson Desert. Unlike most birds that appear throughout the day across many regions, the Owl is a nighttime-only spawn that shows up in specific elevated locations. Get the timing wrong or use the wrong food and you will spend an entire session seeing nothing. This guide covers every spawn location, the exact time window, the favorite food, and how to set up correctly so you are not waiting around for nothing.

TL;DR

  • The Owl is a nighttime-only bird. It only spawns between 10 PM and 4 AM in-game time, with the most reliable window around 4 AM.
  • You need the Sotdae of Bond (bird feeder) before you can tame any bird — including the Owl.
  • Best location for all players: Howling Hill camp cliff edge, facing north from the Abyss Nexus in Hernand.
  • Best location for reliability: Cliff edges south of Scholastone Institute in Hernand.
  • Other confirmed spots: Three-Brothers’ Cliff in Delesyia, Trembling Gorge near Pororin Village, Longbranch Shade Hideout in Pailune, Spire of Insight.
  • Favorite food: Tough Meat (+35 Trust per feeding). Buy from any Butcher in Pywel.
  • Place the Sotdae on elevated terrain — cliff edges, not flat ground.
  • You need 100 Trust to adopt. Press Square (PS) / X (Xbox) to take the Owl in.
  • If no Owl appears by 6 AM, reset and try again the next night.

What Is the Owl Pet in Crimson Desert

The Owl is classified as a rare bird pet in Crimson Desert. It is one of the most time-specific and location-specific pets in the game — harder to get than most dogs, cats, and even some other bird-of-prey pets like the Gyrfalcon and Eagle.

Like all pets, the Owl follows you through Pywel and auto-loots items from enemy corpses after combat. It perches on Kliff’s arm when you stand still. It does not attack enemies and cannot wear standard pet armor, but it does have accessory and collar slots. All pets function identically for looting — the Owl is a collectible and visual companion more than anything else.

The Owl is one of over 30 bird breeds in the game. It counts toward the 30-pet Natural Collector trophy alongside dogs, cats, and other birds.

Before You Start — Get the Sotdae of Bond

You cannot tame any bird in Crimson Desert without the Sotdae of Bond. It is the bird feeder used to attract and feed wild birds and is required for every bird pet in the game. You cannot buy or craft it — it is a quest reward.

To get it, complete the Authorized Access section of the Trembling Woods faction quest for the Pororin Forest Guardians:

  • Travel to Florindale, southeast of the Hernand Highlands near the Unicorn Cliffs.
  • Try to walk into Pororin Village. The Shai guardians will sleep-dart and knock you out.
  • Return and attempt entry two more times. After the third knockout, a Shai named Arkin appears.
  • He tasks you with retrieving the Pororin Relic from a giant Ent in Trembling Gorge.
  • Return the relic to Arkin. You receive the Sotdae of Bond as your reward.

Already completed the Trembling Woods quest? Check your Private Storage at Howling Hill camp — the Sotdae was added automatically. If it is missing, go to Carl at Greymane Camp, select Recover Items, and buy it back for 1 Silver. Full steps in our Sotdae of Bond guide.

Owl Spawn Time

The Owl is strictly nocturnal. It will not appear during the day under any circumstances. The spawn window runs from 10 PM to 4 AM in-game time, with 4 AM being the most reliable hour when Owls are most likely to land on the Sotdae.

Arrive at your chosen location around midnight to place the Sotdae and load it with food before the peak window opens. If no Owl has appeared by 6 AM, the spawn cycle has ended for that night. Reset by fast travelling away, then return the next night.

You can advance time quickly by sleeping in a bed or using a cooking pot to skip forward to the right hour without waiting in real time.

All Owl Spawn Locations

Owls prefer elevated terrain — cliff edges, ridgelines, and open forest borders. They do not spawn reliably on flat ground or in dense interiors. Always place your Sotdae on a cliff edge or raised area for the best chance of attracting one.

Location 1 — Howling Hill Camp Cliff (Hernand) — Best for Early Players

This is the most accessible Owl location and works for players at any stage of story progression. Go to the Howling Hill camp in Hernand and face north from the cliff near the Abyss Nexus. Place the Sotdae on the cliff edge here.

The fast travel point right next to the camp makes this location easy to reach and reset between sessions. Arrive around midnight, set up, and wait for the 4 AM window.

Location 2 — South of Scholastone Institute (Hernand) — Most Reliable Spot

The cliff edges south of Scholastone Institute in southern Hernand are the most consistent Owl farming location in the game. The elevated terrain gives wide sightlines and the spawn cycles here are more reliable than most other spots. Fast travel to Scholastone, head south to the cliff edges, set up the Sotdae, and wait for the night window to open.

Do not place the feeder in the middle of the institute itself — stick to the raised ground and open cliff edges just to the south for best results.

Location 3 — Three-Brothers’ Cliff (Delesyia)

Three-Brothers’ Cliff in the Delesyia region is a confirmed Owl spawn point. Delesyia is considered the dedicated Owl region by the community. This cliff works on the same principle as the Scholastone location — elevated terrain, open sightlines, nighttime setup. Use the Abyss Nexus in the area to fast travel in and reset between runs.

Location 4 — Trembling Gorge near Pororin Village (Hernand)

Trembling Gorge, found near Pororin Village in south Hernand, is a reliable secondary location. The dense forest cover makes spotting harder than at the cliff locations, but Owl spawn rates here are solid during peak hours. Position yourself near the rim of the gorge rather than inside it — Owls appear along the edges, not in the interior.

This is also the location you visit during the Authorized Access quest to get the Sotdae of Bond, so it is an area you will already be familiar with. Our Unreachable Village quest guide covers this area in full.

Location 5 — Longbranch Shade Hideout (Pailune)

Longbranch Shade Hideout in Pailune is a confirmed Owl location. It works best as a dedicated stop on a rotation rather than a quick pass-through — the reduced visibility here means you need to give it at least 10 to 15 minutes per visit for consistent results.

Location 6 — Spire of Insight

The Spire of Insight is another confirmed Owl location. It works well as a final stop on a nighttime rotation if the earlier locations have not produced a result. For more on this area, see our Spire of Insight puzzle guide.

Owl Favorite Food

The Owl’s favorite food is Tough Meat, which gives +35 Trust per feeding — the maximum Trust gain per food item. You can also use Lean Meat or Fine Meat as substitutes, but Tough Meat is more consistent at attracting Owls and builds Trust faster.

Buy Tough Meat from any Butcher vendor in Pywel — the Butcher in Hernand Town is the most convenient early option. Stock up before heading out for the night so you are not running back mid-session.

You can feed a bird up to 3 times per in-game day. The daily limit resets at midnight in-game time. Three feedings of Tough Meat at +35 Trust each gives +105 Trust — enough to hit 100 in a single night if the Owl lands and eats during one session.

How to Set Up and Tame the Owl Step by Step

Step 1 — Arrive Early and Place the Sotdae

Travel to your chosen location around midnight in-game time. This gives you time to set up before the 4 AM peak window. Place the Sotdae of Bond on a cliff edge or elevated terrain:

  • Select the Sotdae of Bond in your inventory.
  • Hold L1 / LB to aim, then press Triangle / Y to place. On PC: hold Ctrl and press R.
  • The placement circle turns blue on valid ground. Aim for cliff edges — flat ground is much less effective for Owls.

Step 2 — Load It with Tough Meat

Interact with the placed Sotdae and fill it with Tough Meat. Load enough for multiple feedings — you want to reach 100 Trust in one session if possible. The Sotdae holds food between sessions so you do not need to refill it every visit.

Step 3 — Step Back and Wait

Move away from the Sotdae after loading it. Standing too close can frighten the Owl away before it lands. Keep a few metres of distance and let the feeder do the work. Also clear any nearby enemies before setting up — aggroed enemies in the area will keep birds from landing.

Step 4 — Owl Lands and Feeds

When the Owl lands on the Sotdae and begins eating, the Trust meter starts filling. Watch it build with each feeding. Do not approach the bird while it is eating or it may fly off.

Step 5 — Adopt the Owl

Once Trust hits 100, approach the Owl and press Square (PS) / X (Xbox) to take it in as your permanent pet. It is saved to your collection and can be summoned any time from the radial menu.

If the wrong bird lands on the feeder first, shoot it off with a ranged weapon to clear the spot. You may need to reposition the Sotdae afterward as flies gather around it.

Tips for Getting the Owl Faster

  • Rotate locations across one night window. Do not camp a single spot all night. Start at south of Scholastone Institute at 10 PM, work the cliff edge, then move to Three-Brothers’ Cliff or Trembling Gorge mid-session. Chaining locations gives you more attempts before the 4 AM cutoff.
  • Elevation is everything. If you set the Sotdae on flat ground, expect to wait much longer or see nothing. Every confirmed Owl spawn point is elevated terrain — cliff edges, ridgelines, and gorge rims outperform flat areas significantly.
  • Use Tough Meat exclusively. Do not dilute the feeder with other food types when specifically targeting Owls. Tough Meat is the favourite food and gives the fastest Trust gain.
  • Clear the area of enemies first. Aggroed enemies nearby will prevent the Owl from landing. Take a moment to clear the immediate area before placing the Sotdae.
  • Reset by fast travelling. If no Owl appears by 6 AM, fast travel to the Abyss Nexus and return the following night. Do not stand at an empty feeder hoping the spawn will trigger — it will not change within the same night cycle.
  • Advance time if needed. If you are at the right location but need to wait for 4 AM, sleep at a nearby bed or use a cooking pot to fast-forward time instead of waiting in real time.
  • Already working on your bird pet collection? See our guide on how to get the Gyrfalcon and Eagle pets — they share the same Sotdae of Bond requirement and taming system but spawn in west Pailune at a different time window.
  • For the rarest bird in the game, see our Legendary Phoenix guide — it works differently from all other birds and requires shooting rather than feeding.
