TL;DR
- The SectorGuard is the Sector 1 boss at the end of the Solar Power Plant. It is mandatory and cannot be skipped.
- Its weak point is the orange fuel tank on its back — not the head or front armor. Always reposition behind it after hacking.
- Hack first, shoot second. The fight barely rewards shooting without opening the boss first.
- The Decode hacking node massively amplifies damage in the vulnerability window. Use it every cycle.
- At roughly 50–70% health, the boss enters a more aggressive phase and you unlock Overdrive Protocol. Save the Stasis Net for this moment.
- Critical Shots trigger at scripted health thresholds. Walk up and press the prompt when the purple circle appears.
- Sprint through missiles — running outpaces tracking projectiles better than dodging. Save dodges for the charge.
- Defeating it rewards a Shelter License Key, unlocking new Shelter features and the Cabin Stamp Club.
Who Is the SectorGuard?
The SectorGuard is the first major boss in Pragmata, found at the very end of Sector 1 — the Solar Power Plant. You encounter it after activating the main control panel at the top of the central lift in the Concourse area. A cutscene triggers, and the fight begins.
It is a mandatory story boss. There is no way around it, and you cannot proceed to Sector 2 until it is defeated. The fight is designed as a true tutorial for the game’s core combat loop — hacking, weak point targeting, Critical Shots, and Overdrive Protocol. Everything the SectorGuard teaches you will be asked of you again in harder forms for the rest of the game.
If you played the SKETCHBOOK demo Capcom released before launch, you fought a version of this boss with a fully equipped loadout. The full game gives you much less to work with at this point, so the fight will feel harder than the demo suggested. Do not let that discourage you — once the pattern clicks, it is very manageable.
Before entering the arena, make sure you have activated the third Escape Hatch in the sector, and look for the third Mini Cabin sitting on a fan vent on the wall just before the boss room — shoot it to collect it. Once the SectorGuard cutscene triggers, there is no going back until the fight is over.
What to Bring Into the Fight
At this stage of the game your options are limited, but here is the best setup:
Loadout going in:
- Primary: Grip Gun (only option)
- Attack: Shockwave Gun if you have printed it — this is the best weapon for hitting the fuel tank at close range
- Tactical: Stasis Net — save it for the berserk phase, do not burn it early
- Hacking node: Decode — increases damage dealt after a completed hack and is the most impactful node available at this point
The arena also has pickups scattered around it — ammo, hacking nodes, and healing items. Before engaging, do a quick scan of the arena edge to note where these are. You will want to pick up healing items during quieter moments between attacks, not while the boss is charging at you.

SectorGuard Attacks — What to Watch For
The SectorGuard has two main attacks throughout the fight. Both are readable once you know the telegraphs.
The Charge
The SectorGuard crouches slightly before dashing across the arena at high speed. When it connects, it deals heavy damage and knocks Hugh back. Diana will sometimes call out a verbal warning when the charge is coming.
How to handle it: Dodge sideways, not backwards. The charge covers a lot of ground and a straight-backwards dodge often does not create enough lateral distance to clear the hitbox. A sideways dodge when you see the crouch animation begins is the cleanest counter. Keep the boss in your peripheral vision at all times — the most common source of chip damage in this fight is turning to face away from it while hacking and catching the charge blind.
The Missile Volley
Once the boss has taken enough damage — roughly the 50–70% health range — it starts firing a barrage of tracking missiles. Red circles appear on the ground showing impact zones. The missiles track your movement over several seconds after launch.
How to handle it: Sprint continuously rather than dodging. Continuous sprinting outpaces the tracking speed of the missiles more reliably than using dodge, which also puts you in a brief recovery state. Save your dodge charges for situations where a missile locks on at close range and you genuinely cannot outrun it.
The missile volley phase is also an opportunity: while the SectorGuard is firing, it is stationary. If you can get behind it during this window, you can land free hits on the fuel tank while it finishes the animation. Use this whenever it opens up.

How to Deal Damage — The Core Loop
The SectorGuard follows the same rule as every other enemy in Pragmata: raw gunfire without hacking first deals minimal damage. Do not waste ammo shooting the front or sides of the boss. The armor plating there is extremely effective.
The damage loop is simple and repeats throughout the entire fight:
Step 1 — Initiate a hack. Start Diana’s grid as soon as the boss is within range. Navigate the hacking puzzle. If you have a Decode node, route through it — it significantly increases the damage the SectorGuard takes for the vulnerability window that follows.
Step 2 — Reposition behind the boss. The moment the hack completes and the boss enters the OPEN state, immediately move to its back. The weak point is the large orange fuel tank on the SectorGuard’s back. This is where all your meaningful damage needs to land. Front shots during the OPEN state still deal less than back shots on the fuel tank.
Step 3 — Fire into the fuel tank. Pull out the Shockwave Gun if you have it and fire directly into the canister. The Shockwave Gun deals burst damage at close range and staggers the boss. Each completed hack cycle builds the boss’s stagger gauge.
Step 4 — Repeat. Start the next hack as soon as the boss recovers. Consistent hacking also builds Diana’s Overdrive gauge, which you will need shortly.
Phase 2 — Berserk Mode and Overdrive
At around 50–70% health, the SectorGuard enters a more aggressive state. Missile volleys become more frequent and harder to avoid. A cutscene or brief animation signals this transition, and it is also when the game introduces Diana’s Overdrive Protocol for the first time.
Overdrive Protocol is built up through hacking. When the gauge fills, activate it. It releases a burst of energy that hits all nearby enemies, opens the SectorGuard for follow-up damage, and immobilises it temporarily. This is your single largest damage window in the entire fight. The correct play when Overdrive activates is to immediately get behind the boss and dump everything into the fuel tank while it is frozen. Do not waste this window repositioning — be behind the boss before you trigger it.
This phase is also when to deploy the Stasis Net if you have been holding it. The Stasis Net freezes the boss in place, functioning similarly to Overdrive but without the immobilisation window. Using it during the berserk phase gives you safe, controlled access to the fuel tank without the boss sprinting away mid-attack. If you used the Stasis Net earlier, you will need to scavenge a replacement from arena pickups before this phase, which is why holding it is recommended.
The berserk phase also creates a trade-off worth knowing: despite appearing more dangerous, the SectorGuard becomes more vulnerable to hacking-based damage bursts during this phase. If you have saved resources like Stasis Net and Overdrive for now, this is exactly the right moment to go all-in.

Critical Shots
Critical Shots are a mechanic introduced during this boss fight. After you build enough stagger through repeated hacks and damage, a purple circle appears around the SectorGuard. Walk close to it and press the prompt that appears. Hugh performs a high-damage attack that deals a significant chunk of the boss’s remaining health.
For the SectorGuard, these trigger at scripted health points rather than purely through player-driven stagger. When you see the purple circle, stop whatever you are doing and go for the prompt immediately. These are some of the biggest damage moments in the fight and missing them significantly extends the time to kill.
After the Fight — What You Unlock
When the SectorGuard collapses, it drops your first Shelter License Key. Pick it up. This is not optional — the License Key is what you give to Cabin at the Shelter to raise your Shelter Level and unlock new features.
Defeating the SectorGuard and returning the key unlocks:
- Cabin’s Stamp Club and the ability to spend Cabin Coins
- New items and upgrade tiers at the Unit Printer
- Additional upgrade levels at the Firmware Updater
- Access to Sector 2 — Mass Production Array
You will be transported to the Shelter automatically shortly after the fight ends. At this point, spend your accumulated Lunafilament at the Unit Printer, print the Shockwave Gun permanently if you have not already, and spend any Upgrade Components at the Firmware Updater. Prioritise Diana’s Hacking upgrades first — see our Pragmata best firmware upgrades guide for why this matters.
Also note: Escape Hatch 3 in Sector 1 only becomes available after the boss fight, at the top of the elevator. Return here manually after the story moves on if you want it activated for fast travel. It does not appear during the fight itself.
SectorGuard Boss Tips — Quick Reference
Do: Hack constantly. The damage multiplier from OPEN state is what makes the fight work.
Do: Always reposition behind the boss before firing. The fuel tank is everything.
Do: Use Decode before shooting into the weak point. More damage per window means fewer cycles needed.
Do: Sprint through missiles rather than dodging. Running outpaces tracking better and preserves your dodge charges.
Do: Save the Stasis Net for berserk phase. The first half of the fight does not demand it.
Do: Activate Overdrive from behind the boss. Be in position before you press the button.
Do not: Shoot the front armor. It barely registers.
Do not: Look away from the boss. Off-screen charges are the most common cause of unexpected damage.
Do not: Burn Repair Canisters on small hits. Hold them for when you take a full charge or a bad missile cluster.
Do not: Ignore arena pickups. Hacking nodes and ammo respawn around the edges. Scavenge during safe moments between attacks.
What This Fight Teaches You
The SectorGuard is genuinely a tutorial wrapped in a boss fight. Everything it forces you to do appears again in every subsequent encounter in the game, just with more complexity:
Hack before shooting — every enemy in Pragmata has armor that resists raw gunfire. Hacking is not optional. Repositioning for the weak point — later bosses have multiple weak points in harder-to-reach positions, but the principle of moving to the right spot before firing stays constant. Overdrive timing — every boss in the game has a moment where Overdrive creates the largest damage window. Learning to hold it for that moment here pays off across all of Sector 2 and beyond. Critical Shot prompts — these appear throughout the whole game. Reacting to the purple circle immediately is a habit worth building now.
The SectorGuard is also a fair difficulty check. If you struggled significantly, it is worth returning to the Shelter to upgrade Diana’s Hacking at the Firmware Updater and print the Shockwave Gun at the Unit Printer before attempting Sector 2. Sector 2 — Mass Production Array — introduces faster enemies and more complex encounter designs. Going in with the upgrades the SectorGuard was teaching you to earn makes the next sector feel manageable rather than overwhelming.
