Crimson Desert: Cloister of Ruination Guide
The Cloister of Ruination is the end goal of the Darkness Over the Sanctum faction quest in Crimson Desert. It is a hidden boss location that stays completely sealed until you have defeated three specific bosses in three different Sanctums across the map. Going there early achieves nothing — the boss simply does not appear until all three conditions are met.
This guide covers every step: which bosses to defeat, where to find each Sanctum, how to navigate the Cloister itself, and how to beat Ator, the Antumbra Archon, once you reach the bottom floor.

What Is the Cloister of Ruination?

The Cloister of Ruination is the stronghold of Antumbra’s Order — the faction responsible for corrupting the Sanctums across Pywel. The three Antumbra bosses in those Sanctums each hold a seal keeping the Cloister’s deepest level locked.
When you defeat the first Antumbra boss, you will receive knowledge of Ator, the Antumbra Archon — the true boss at the heart of the Cloister. Each subsequent defeat breaks another seal. Once all three are broken, the underground of the Cloister opens and Ator appears.
This is part of the Darkness Over the Sanctum faction quest. Completing it rewards some of the best gear in the game.
How to Unseal the Cloister of Ruination: All Three Antumbra Bosses
You need to defeat three Antumbra bosses, one in each of the following Sanctums. You do not need to solve the Sanctum puzzles or fully cleanse them — just defeating the boss in each location is enough to break its seal.

Boss 1: Antumbra’s Sword — Sanctum of Absolution
Sanctum: Sanctum of Absolution, southwest of Hernand City (Hernand region) Witch connection: Witch of Wisdom (Chapter 5 required to solve the puzzle, but not required to fight the boss)
Antumbra’s Sword is fast, aggressive, and can chain attacks with almost no downtime. The most reliable strategy centers on Blinding Flash to cancel his two most dangerous moves:
- Ground Thrust — Use Blinding Flash the moment he lifts his sword with both hands
- Triple Shadow Strike — Dodge the first two teleports, then use Blinding Flash after the third to cancel the chain
Outside of those windows, use Focus mode to land parries on his regular swings. Each parry fills his poise bar. When the poise bar maxes out, you get a long vulnerable window for heavy combos. Follow every Blinding Flash with the Blinding Flash Finisher to gap-close and deal your biggest damage burst. Use Stab in between to apply bleed damage that ticks passively.
There is an indestructible pillar in the arena. Use it as cover when you need to recover health. His red-glowing attacks are unblockable — dodge those instead of blocking.
Rewards: Vessel of Dark Pursuit (two-handed sword with Wound of Darkness Abyss Gear) + 1 Abyss Artifact.

Boss 2: Antumbra’s Spear — Sanctum of Revelation
Sanctum: Sanctum of Revelation, northeast of Serpent Marsh in Demeniss Witch connection: Witch of Strength
The Sanctum of Revelation is on the way to the Bamboo Forest Seonangdang Ruins, so you may have passed through this area already. Antumbra’s Spear has a longer range than the Sword variant due to the weapon type, and its poke attacks can catch you off guard during dodges. Stay to the sides rather than directly in front or behind during its charge combos.
Full Sanctum details in our Sanctum of Revelation puzzle guide.

Boss 3: Antumbra’s Staff — Sanctum of Solace
Sanctum: Sanctum of Solace Witch connection: Witch of Solace
Antumbra’s Staff has a specific mechanic that sets it apart from the other two: it has one particularly deadly charged attack that you can cancel outright using Force Palm. When you see the staff beginning to charge up a large energy attack, hit it with Force Palm before it releases. This completely shuts down the attack and gives you a punish window. Missing this cancel and taking the full hit will likely down you.

Cloister of Ruination Location in Crimson Desert

The Cloister of Ruination is at the westernmost edge of Pailune, near Silver Wolf Mountain. To reach it, you need to pass through the Wayward Woods — you cannot access the Cloister from any other direction. Our guide on how to enter the Wayward Woods Witch Hideout explains that area fully.
The Cloister is a significant distance from most Abyss Nexus fast travel points. Plan for some travel time on your first visit.
Important: When you first arrive, before heading inside, climb to the highest point of the Cloister structure. There is an Abyss Cresset at the top. Activate it to unlock a permanent fast travel point here. This is critical — if you die fighting Ator inside, you can fast travel straight back to the top of the Cloister rather than making the long journey from the nearest Abyss Nexus each time.

How to Enter the Cloister and Reach Ator
Once all three seals are broken:
- Go to the Cloister of Ruination
- Climb to the highest point and activate the Abyss Cresset (if you have not already)
- From the top, glide downward through the center of the tower to descend to the lowest floor
- At the bottom level, Ator, the Antumbra Archon, will be waiting
If all three Antumbra bosses have been defeated and you have received the faction quest update confirming “3 out of 3 seals broken,” Ator will appear as soon as you enter the bottom floor. The fight begins automatically.
How to Beat Ator, the Antumbra Archon
Ator is the hardest boss in this entire questline — and one of the hardest hidden bosses in the game. Before attempting this fight, make sure you have invested in all three stats. Our guides on how to get max stamina and how to get max health will help you prepare.
Why Ator Is So Difficult
Ator’s defense is extremely high. Your hits will barely seem to register damage. At the same time, Ator’s attacks can one-shot you if you are not prepared. The fight demands patience and clean execution, not aggressive play.
Bring more food than you think you need. Bring multiple Palmar Pills (our guide covers how to get and use Palmar Pills). This fight will go long even if you play well.
Ator’s Attack Patterns
Orb Waves: Ator constantly fires orbs that track you. Each individual orb counts as a full attack with its own stagger and damage. Do not try to block these — each blocked orb drains a huge chunk of Stamina. Always dodge Ator’s orbs instead of shielding them. When the orbs glow, they are about to launch — start dodging immediately.
Golden Hammer Jump: Ator summons a large golden hammer and raises it high. This signals a jump-and-flip slam onto your current position. Wait until Ator flips midair, then dodge immediately. The slam creates an AoE on the ground that persists after landing — do not step on the hammer impact zone as it keeps dealing damage until it disappears. Get behind Ator when the hammer comes out to avoid the forward-facing slam area.
Combo Into Orb-Hammer Mix: Ator sometimes follows a standard attack with a sudden hammer slam and orb burst. This combination attack can overwhelm you if you are reacting too slowly. Stay mobile after any standard attack rather than committing to a long punish combo.
Darkness Phase (Ultimate): Ator becomes physically immune and fills the arena with darkness, making it nearly impossible to see movements or predict incoming attacks. During this phase, focus entirely on the glowing hammer and move away from wherever it appears to be landing. Ator slams the ground three to four times in this pattern before stopping. Do not attack Ator at all during the Darkness Phase — wait it out and conserve Stamina.

Fighting Strategy
The core approach against Ator is patience and positioning. Ator’s attack patterns do not change throughout the fight, which is actually your biggest advantage. Learn the sequence of each move and you can predict what is coming next.
Commit to short punish windows only — two to three strikes after a dodge or parry. Then disengage. Greedy attacks will get you caught in a follow-up combo. Keep your distance, dodge orbs cleanly, get behind Ator when the hammer appears, and wait out the Darkness Phase.
Stamina management is critical here. If you burn your Stamina bar blocking orbs or doing long combos, you will have nothing left to dodge the hammer slams. Save Stamina for dodges first, attacks second.

Rewards for Defeating Ator, the Antumbra Archon
Defeating Ator gives you:
- Darkbringer — a two-handed sword with five Abyss Core Sockets, pre-equipped with Attack Speed 1, Critical Rate 1, and the Ator’s Orb Abyss Core
- Full Ator Armor Set — a complete armor set tied to the Antumbra Archon
The Darkbringer’s standout feature is the Ator’s Orb Abyss Core. If you prefer to use a different weapon, you can extract this core and apply it to your current weapon by visiting any Witch in the game. Our Abyss Gears guide explains how to extract and transfer cores.
To get the most out of the Darkbringer and the armor set, see our how to reinforce equipment guide and accessories guide.
