Crimson Desert: How to Get the Darkbringer Sword

TL;DR

  • The Darkbringer is a two-handed greatsword found at White Wastes Sanctuary in the northwest of Pailune
  • It’s lodged between the teeth of a partially buried giant skeleton — no boss fight or puzzle required
  • Starts at Refinement Level 4 with 22 Attack, Critical Rate Level 3, and Attack Speed Level 1
  • Comes with 5 Abyss Gear slots — 3 already filled including the unique Ator’s Orb ability
  • Ator’s Orb fires tracking explosive orbs at enemies on heavy attacks — devastating against crowds
  • You can also get it as a drop from defeating Ator, Archon of Antumbra
  • The area is extremely cold — bring Ice Protection gear and frost-resistant food before you go

If you’ve heard players talking about a sword that shoots glowing orbs at enemies, this is the one. The Darkbringer is one of the strongest two-handed weapons you can grab in Crimson Desert, and the best part is you don’t need to beat a single boss or complete any quest to get it. It’s sitting in an open-world location, wedged between the jaws of a giant buried skeleton, waiting for anyone willing to make the trip to the far north of Pailune.

The journey is long and the cold will kill you if you’re unprepared. But this guide covers everything — the route, what to bring, what to watch for, and exactly what the sword does once you have it.

What Is the Darkbringer Sword?

The Darkbringer is a unique two-handed greatsword in Crimson Desert, exclusive to Kliff. It starts at Refinement Level 4 the moment you pick it up, which puts it well ahead of most weapons available at the same stage of the game.

What makes it special isn’t just its base stats — it’s the built-in Abyss Gear. The sword comes with three Abyss Gear orbs already slotted into its five available slots, including the rare Ator’s Orb ability that no other weapon in the game has by default.

One important thing to know before picking it up: two-handed weapons prevent you from equipping a shield at the same time. The Darkbringer is an aggressive weapon built for players who want to go on the offense. If you prefer a balanced shield-and-sword style, the Darkbringer works best as a situational weapon rather than your everyday carry. More on how to dual wield in Crimson Desert if you want to explore other weapon configurations.

The three pre-filled Abyss Gear slots carry Attack Speed 1, Critical Rate 1, and Ator’s Orb. Two slots remain open for you to customize.

At base, the Darkbringer is stronger than most greatswords you’ll craft or find during the early-to-mid game. To push it further after picking it up, you’ll need Iron Ore, Copper Ore, an Abyss Artifact, and Bloodstone to refine past Level 4. That said, if you grab it in the early game, it’ll carry you comfortably for several chapters before refinement becomes necessary.

For ore farming to support refinement, check out the guides on how to get iron ore and how to get copper ore.

Ator’s Orb — The Darkbringer’s Unique Ability

Ator’s Orb is what sets the Darkbringer apart from every other greatsword in the game. When you perform a heavy attack (R2/RT on controller, Right Mouse Button on PC) or finish a full combo, the ability fires out multiple glowing yellow orbs into the air. These orbs home in on nearby enemies and detonate on contact, dealing additional damage on top of your melee hit.

The tracking is reliable. The orbs will seek out enemies in range even if they’ve moved since you swung, making the ability especially punishing against grouped enemies. You don’t need to aim separately — just swing.

This makes the Darkbringer one of the best weapons in the game for mob clearing, siege missions, and liberation activities where you’re fighting large numbers of enemies at once. For single-target bosses with small damage windows, a high-piercing specialized sword might slightly edge it out, but for anything involving more than a handful of enemies, Ator’s Orb is exceptional.

Stacking Ator’s Orb with Crow’s Pursuit: If you’ve beaten Crowcaller and picked up the Crow’s Pursuit Abyss Gear, the two abilities stack off the same heavy attack input. Crow’s Pursuit fires bird-based projectiles at nearby enemies, Ator’s Orb fires explosive tracking orbs — both trigger simultaneously. The result is a melee strike that also puts out a burst of ranged projectile damage, making the Darkbringer feel more like a hybrid weapon than a pure greatsword. For the Crowcaller quest and the Blackwing armor tied to it, see the Crimson Desert Crowcaller quest guide and Blackwing Crowcaller Armor locations.

Ator’s Orb is transferable: Because it’s an Abyss Gear, you can extract Ator’s Orb from the Darkbringer and slot it into any other weapon — including one-handed swords. Visit a Witch to do the transfer. This means even players who don’t like two-handed builds can still benefit from picking up the Darkbringer, just for the Abyss Gear alone. See the all witches locations guide to find the nearest one. For more on how Abyss Gear works in general, the unlock witches Abyss Gears guide covers the full system.

Don’t sell it. The Darkbringer’s vendor value is around 27 Silver — an awful trade for what it offers. Even if two-handed swords aren’t your style, the Ator’s Orb Abyss Gear inside is worth holding onto for mid-to-late game builds.

Before You Go: Prepare for the Cold

The White Wastes region northwest of Pailune is brutal on unprepared players. The area inflicts a persistent Ice status that chips away at your health and dramatically slows stamina recovery. If your stamina regeneration tanks in a cold zone, you can’t run, climb, or dodge effectively — and there are high-level enemies on the route that will exploit that.

Wear Ice Protection gear. The Frostcursed Armor Set is one of the best options for cold resistance and is worth grabbing from Demeniss before heading north if you haven’t already. The Helfryn Leather Armor’s cloak also provides solid Ice Resistance 5 if you have that set. For the full breakdown of how ice resistance works and what gear helps, see the ice resistance and frost protection guide.

Bring frost-resistant food. Vendors in Pailune carry food items that temporarily boost cold resistance. Stock up before heading into the mountains. The how to cook the best healing food guide has options to prepare ahead of time.

Don’t go into the river. When you arrive at the mountain range, avoid the ravine where the river runs. The water temperature is lethal and will kill you very quickly.

Watch your stamina. The cold environment reduces stamina recovery rate. Upgrade your max stamina before the trip if possible. See how to get max stamina in Crimson Desert for the fastest ways to increase it.

Where Is the Darkbringer? — Exact Location

The Darkbringer is at the White Wastes Sanctuary, in the far northwest of the Pailune region. More specifically:

  • West of Silver Wolf Mountain
  • Northeast of the Five-Finger Mountain label on the map
  • North of Whisperleaf Fortress

The sanctuary is a snow-covered excavation pit containing the partially unearthed skeleton of a giant. Even after ringing the Toll of Pailune bell to clear regional fog of war, this specific sub-zone often stays obscured on the map. Don’t expect a clear road marker pointing you there.

The Darkbringer sword is lodged between the teeth of the giant skull inside this pit. No enemies guard it. No puzzle. Walk up and pull it out.

How to Get to the Darkbringer — Step by Step

Route from Hernand (Early Game)

If you’re going for the Darkbringer early, before you have many fast travel points in Pailune, here’s a route that avoids the worst of the dangers:

Step 1: Start from Hernand. Ride north toward Haunted Hill, then continue through Deepfrog Basin.

Step 2: Push past Wayward Woods, heading northwest. As you travel, stop on elevated terrain periodically to use Blinding Flash — this reveals nearby Abyss Artifacts and Mysterious Energy points that you can activate for fast travel later. The how to enter Wayward Woods and witch hideout guide is useful if you’re exploring that area too.

Step 3: Avoid riding straight into the Five-Finger Mountains — the terrain makes it harder to navigate. Stay slightly west as you head north.

Step 4: Look for a Mysterious Energy point on your map as you approach the mountain range. Follow it. It leads directly to an Abyss Nexus fast travel point near the White Wastes Sanctuary. Activate it immediately — this becomes your return point.

Step 5: From the Abyss Nexus, look west and slightly uphill. You’ll see crows circling in the sky. Follow the crows — they mark the exact pit where the skeleton is buried.

Step 6: Climb down into the pit and approach the skull. The Darkbringer is between the teeth. Interact with it to pick it up.

Route from Demeniss (Mid Game)

If you’re already in Demeniss and heading into Pailune, be cautious. The Black Bears scattered throughout Pailune are powerful and will hit very hard, especially in early-to-mid game. Don’t try to fight them — ride around them.

Before leaving Demeniss, pick up the Frostcursed Armor Set if you haven’t. The Ice Resistance it provides is practically essential for covering ground quickly in the White Wastes without your stamina gutting out at the worst moment.

Ride northeast from Demeniss toward Whisperleaf Fortress, then push north from there into the Five-Finger Mountain area. Use Blinding Flash on high ground to reveal the Mysterious Energy / Abyss Nexus near the sanctuary. Activate it and follow the crows west to the skeleton pit.

Alternative Method: Defeat Ator, Archon of Antumbra

If you’d rather earn the Darkbringer through a boss fight, you can get an identical copy by defeating Ator, Archon of Antumbra. The two versions of the sword are completely identical in stats and Abyss Gear loadout.

The open-world version is simply easier and faster to access, especially early in the game when you haven’t leveled up enough to face Ator comfortably. But if you’re already planning to fight Ator for other reasons, that boss also rewards the full Ator armor set. Check out the full how to beat Ator, Archon of Antumbra guide for the boss fight breakdown.

How to Use the Darkbringer Effectively

Spam heavy attacks. The Darkbringer’s real damage output comes from Ator’s Orb, which only triggers on heavy attacks and combo finishers. Build your combat around getting heavy attacks off consistently. This means keeping your stamina topped up — the how to get max stamina guide and how to get max health guide are both worth reading before you build around this weapon.

Target staggerable bosses. The Darkbringer shines against bosses that either have long damage windows or can be staggered repeatedly. When a boss is staggered, you can land full combos and consistently proc Ator’s Orb for massive burst damage. For the best sword mastery challenges and skill challenges to complement a two-handed build, those guides have you covered.

Fill the two empty Abyss Gear slots. The Darkbringer has two open slots. Abyss Gear that triggers on Forward Slash stacks especially well, giving you multiple effects from a single input. Destruction Abyss Cores also work well to increase overall attack power as you push deeper into the game.

Use Blinding Flash before combat. In open-world encounters, using Blinding Flash before a group of enemies buys you a window to land heavy attacks and trigger Ator’s Orb before the enemies even start moving.

Upgrade through the skill tree. Skills that buff Forward Slash multiply how hard Ator’s Orb hits. Invest in those nodes early. Check the best skills to level up first guide to plan your priorities.

Dodge instead of blocking. Since you can’t equip a shield with the Darkbringer, your defense comes entirely from dodging and parrying. The how to parry, counter, and dodge guide covers the mechanics in full.

Tips for the Trip

Activate every Abyss Nexus on the way. Fast travel in this region is sparse early on. Every Mysterious Energy point and Abyss Nexus you activate is a checkpoint you can return to. How to fast travel in Crimson Desert explains the full system.

Clear the fog of war in Pailune first. Ring the local bells before heading deep into the northwest. The all bell tower locations guide shows all the bell positions across every region.

Don’t rush the five-finger mountain area blind. There are abyss puzzles and ruins in that zone worth exploring while you’re in the area. The Five-Finger Mountain Valley ruins puzzle solution is worth doing on the same trip.

Bring a horse. The terrain is rough and long. Having a fast horse or mount significantly reduces travel time and gives you an escape option if enemy encounters go wrong. The horse guide has everything on mounts and upgrades.

Check your attack level before going. If you’re going very early and enemies on the route are one-shotting you, focus on how to increase your attack level and how to increase your defense level before making the journey.

The Darkbringer is one of those weapons that defines how Crimson Desert rewards exploration. It doesn’t ask you to beat a specific quest or reach a story milestone — it just sits in a giant dead skeleton’s mouth at the edge of the world, waiting for whoever finds it first. The trek to the White Wastes Sanctuary is genuinely one of the more memorable early diversions in the game, and the sword you walk away with is worth every difficult step to get there.
