What Is the Oath Ring Shield?
The Oath Ring Shield is a Round Shield in Crimson Desert. According to the lore, it was forged from the will to protect Pailune. The honorable warriors of the north once swore to protect only their family and tribe, but after Jian united the northern tribes, that vow grew into a broader oath for all of Pailune.
In gameplay, the Oath Ring Shield stands out not because of raw numbers — most shields of the same category share similar base stats — but because it comes with a Defense 3 Abyss Gear already slotted in by default. That gives you the equivalent of an extra refinement and a half worth of raw defense straight from the chest, with no Witch visit or Abyss Artifact investment needed. At max refinement it reaches Defense 25, along with Attack Speed Lv. 1 and Movement Speed Lv. 1 as passive bonuses when equipped.
The combination of movement speed and attack speed on a shield is genuinely useful. Most shields lean purely defensive. This one lets you stay mobile while maintaining solid protection.
Oath Ring Shield Location — Volvior Ruins, Odeck

The Oath Ring Shield is hidden in an underground area called the Hall of the Masterless Throne. You reach it through a trapdoor inside a ruined shack called the Volvior Ruins, located in the Odeck region in the northwestern corner of the Pywel map.
Here is how to orient yourself:
- Odeck is found north of the Steel Mountains, at the top-left corner of the map
- The Volvior Ruins are north of Silver Wolf Mountain
- The area is in the Pailune part of the world, which is the cold northern region
Fastest route: Fast travel to the Silver Wolf Mountain Abyss Nexus, then head straight north until you come across the dilapidated shack of the Volvior Ruins.
The Odeck region is also right next to the snow field where you can find the Chillfallen Sword, so this is a great area to knock out two hidden weapons in one trip.
How to Get the Oath Ring Shield — Step by Step

Step 1: Reach the Volvior Ruins
After fast traveling to the Silver Wolf Mountain Abyss Nexus, ride or run directly north. The terrain will get colder and snowier as you move into the Pailune region. Keep heading north until you spot the Volvior Ruins — a crumbling, abandoned shack surrounded by debris.
If you are coming from the Odeck settlement area, the Volvior Ruins are nearby to the south. The area does not have a large marker, so look for the rundown wooden structure carefully.

Step 2: Find and Open the Trapdoor
Enter the ruins and look down at the floor among the debris. There is a trapdoor hidden in the rubble. Interact with it to open it, then drop down through the opening. This takes you into the underground Hall of the Masterless Throne.
Step 3: Navigate the Trapped Staircase
Once underground, follow the narrow path downward through the staircase. There are two traps you need to get past:
Trap 1 — Flamethrower: You will encounter a flamethrower trap partway down. To get past it safely, crouch and dodge roll forward through the gap in the flames. Time your roll and you will make it through without taking damage.
Trap 2 — Rope Trap: At the bottom of the stairs, you will find a rope holding a second trap in place. Simply cut the rope to disable it and clear your path forward.

Step 4: Enter the Hall and Grab the Shield
After getting through the traps, you reach the Hall of the Masterless Throne. This is the underground chamber named after the empty throne that sits inside it.
The Oath Ring Shield is inside the main chest in this area. Open it to claim the shield.

Step 5: Grab the Bonus Loot
Before leaving, make a quick sweep of the hall for two extra pickups:
- A Palmar Pill is hidden behind the throne itself. Walk around to the back to find it.
- A small treasure chest sits to the right of the throne, containing additional loot.
Both are easy to miss if you just grab the shield and leave, so take a moment to check both spots. Running low on Palmar Pills? See our full guide on Refined Palmar Pill Recipe Location to always keep your stock topped up.
Oath Ring Shield Stats
Here is the full breakdown of what the Oath Ring Shield offers:
- Type: Round Shield
- Defense (Max): 25 at full refinement
- Attack Speed: Lv. 1 (passive bonus when equipped)
- Movement Speed: Lv. 1 (passive bonus when equipped)
- Pre-slotted Abyss Gear: Defense 3
- Abyss Core Slots: 2
- Refinement: Upgradable from +0 to +10 at any Blacksmith
The Defense 3 Abyss Gear already in the shield is the standout feature. It bumps your effective defense significantly without you needing to spend Abyss Artifacts or visit a Witch. Check out our Crimson Desert Abyss Gears List to see what you can slot into the second available core slot to build on top of that.
Is the Oath Ring Shield Worth Getting?
Yes, especially if you are in the Odeck or Pailune region already. The trip is short, there are no enemies you need to fight, and the two traps are simple to bypass. You walk out with a solid shield, a free Palmar Pill, and extra loot from the side chest.
The Movement Speed bonus is the most unique part of this shield. Very few shields in the game offer mobility alongside defense. If you play aggressively — blocking, counterattacking, and repositioning — this shield suits that style well. For active shield gameplay tips, check out our guides on how to parry, counter, and dodge in Crimson Desert and how to flip enemies with a shield.
The pre-slotted Defense 3 Abyss Gear also makes it a strong choice if you are building a tank-style loadout and want to boost defense without spending resources. Pair it with one of the best one-handed swords for a solid sword-and-board setup.
How It Compares to Other Shields
For context, here is how the Oath Ring Shield fits into the broader shield landscape:
The Shield of Conviction is the best early-game shield with 8 base Defense and two pre-slotted Abyss Gears (Aegis I and Fortitude I). If you have not grabbed that yet, our Shield of Conviction guide covers the location. It is easier to get and excellent for tanking boss hits.
The Shield of Betrayal drops from Cassius Morten and also comes with Aegis I and Fortitude I, but at lower base Defense. Check our Cassius Morten Armor Set guide for context on that boss fight.
The Lucon Large Shield and Demeniss Royal Guard Shield are other noteworthy options depending on your region and build. See our guides on how to get the Lucon Large Shield and how to get the Demeniss Royal Guard Shield if you want to compare.
The Oath Ring Shield is a strong mid-range option that earns its place through mobility bonuses and the free Defense 3 Abyss Gear. It is not the absolute top of the tier list, but it is a consistent, reliable piece of gear that rewards players who make the detour north to Odeck.
