Storm Veil is Crimson Desert’s Wind element, and it’s one of the most useful abilities you can get. Unlike the other three elements which lean into damage, Storm Veil is all about control. It lets you drop a smoke cloud mid-fight, break enemy line of sight, and either slip away or reset the fight entirely on your terms. Here’s exactly how to unlock it.
What Is Storm Veil?
Storm Veil is the Wind elemental ability in Crimson Desert. When activated in combat, it releases a cloud of smoke around your character that blinds nearby enemies and resets their aggro. While they’re disoriented, you can reposition, escape, or set up a surprise follow-up attack.
It’s the most utility-focused of the four elements. Lightning Surge stuns, Frost Mantle freezes, Flame Strike burns, but Storm Veil gives you a genuine get-out-of-jail card when a fight starts going badly. For players who like hit-and-run tactics or who regularly push into tough fights a bit under-geared, this is the element you want.
Once you unlock it, it also shows up in the Imbue system, letting you apply Wind to moves like Turning Slash, Meteor Kick, Force Palm, and Charged Shots. For a full breakdown of how Imbue works across all four elements, check our Crimson Desert elemental attacks and Imbue guide.
Requirements: What You Need First
You cannot access Storm Veil until you complete Chapter 8: Blood Coronation. There’s no way around this — the unlock is directly tied to story progress.
At the end of Chapter 8, you fight Lucian Bastier. This boss fight is played entirely as Damiane. After defeating him, you automatically receive the Spire of Clockwork Key as a quest reward. This key is what opens the Spire entrance at Breezeblown Knoll in eastern Demeniss. Our Lucian Bastier boss guide covers that fight in full if you need help there.
Since your inventory is shared between characters, the key is immediately available once you’re back in control of Kliff.
One other thing worth checking before you go: make sure you have the Swift Flight skill unlocked in your skill tree. The Riddle Square challenge involves timed aerial gliding, and Swift Flight makes it significantly easier. If you’re unsure which skills to prioritize, our best skills to level up first guide has good direction on this.
Step 1 — Enter and Climb the Spire of Clockwork

The Spire of Clockwork is located in eastern Demeniss, past the Golden Plains and the Demeniss Supply Camp, at a location called Breezeblown Knoll. Head there and use the key on the front door.
Inside, the climb involves two yellow levers, rotating gears, and a set of weight-based moving platforms. The full step-by-step walkthrough for the climb is covered in our Spire of Clockwork guide. The short version:
Pull the first yellow lever just inside the entrance by jumping onto it and using your weight to drag it down. This activates the lower gear mechanisms. Use the spinning cogs to climb to the second floor, then pull a second lever up there the same way. This powers the upper half of the tower. Navigate the weight tube platforms with careful timing, exit through the rotating clock face when a gap appears, then follow the balcony to the right and press the button to call the elevator. Ride it to the roof and enter the Abyss Gate that appears in the center room.
Step 2 — Navigate Riddle Square

The Abyss Gate at the top of the Spire takes you to Riddle Square, a floating island that’s part of The Wanderer’s Way Abyss cluster. Don’t let the name throw you off — there are no riddles here. It’s a timed flight challenge.
Walk forward toward the large central structure. You’ll see a big fan vent in the middle and a yellow contraption to the right of it. Use Axiom Force (hold L3 on controller / TAB on keyboard) to grab the contraption and activate it. When it lights up blue, the fans power on.
Step into the center of the circle and jump. Once airborne, activate your glider. The updraft will launch you upward through the first set of rings.

Step 3 — Complete the Ring Glide Challenge
Once you’re airborne, your goal is to fly through every ring in the course within the time limit. The rings are arranged in a circuit above the island, with fans positioned around the edges to push you in different directions. Follow them in order and use the fans to carry your momentum between rings.
One important detail: each ring you fly through restores your stamina. This means you can keep your glide acceleration held down the entire time without worrying about running out. The rings are spaced so that you need each stamina refill to reach the next one, so don’t miss any. If you miss a ring, you’ll likely run dry before the next one and fall — which means starting the circuit over.
Use the horizontal fans positioned around the course to redirect your flight toward the side rings. Don’t fight against the fans — let them push you toward the ring in that direction, then glide through and course-correct to the next one.
If you find the time limit tight, Swift Flight skill makes a real difference here. It gives you more speed and control in the air, which is exactly what this challenge asks for. Also, make sure you’ve eaten something for stamina before you start — even though the rings refill stamina, starting the course with more cushion helps. Our best healing food guide shows what to cook before tough sections.
Step 4 — Force Palm the Final Switch
After passing through all the rings, you’ll land on a platform at the far end of the island. There’s a large circular mechanism on the ground in front of you.
Climb onto it and use Force Palm to activate the switch. This completes the Riddle Square challenge.
The Abyss Artifact will now appear on a podium on the opposite side of the island. Walk over and collect it.
That’s the unlock done. Storm Veil and Wind Level 1 are now permanently added to your skill tree.

How to Equip and Use Storm Veil
After unlocking Wind, open your skill tree and look in the red elemental section. You’ll see Wind Level 1 and the Storm Veil skill listed there. Spend Abyss Artifacts to unlock and upgrade it. Higher levels extend the smoke duration and strengthen its effect.
To select Wind as your active element, hold right on the D-pad on controller (or press F3 on keyboard) to open the Function Wheel, then choose Wind.
To cast Storm Veil standalone in combat, press R2 + Circle on controller. This drops a smoke cloud immediately around you. Enemies caught inside it lose their targeting on you and stagger out of their aggro state. Use this when you’re surrounded, when you need a second to heal, or when you want to reset a boss encounter without running away entirely.
To imbue Wind onto a weapon attack, select Wind in the Function Wheel first. Then execute one of the four imbue-compatible moves — Turning Slash, Meteor Kick, Force Palm, or Charged Shot — and press L2 during the animation. You’ll see a wind distortion aura around the attack. Each imbued Wind attack costs Spirit to use, so keep an eye on your Spirit bar during longer fights.
For example: Turning Slash into L2 gives you a wind-imbued slash that applies a blinding effect on hit. This is great for opening combos against groups, as it immediately disrupts their targeting before you go in.
What Unlocking Storm Veil Also Opens Up
Completing Riddle Square does more than just give you the Wind element. It permanently unlocks a fast travel point at Riddle Square in the sky, which you can use to skydive down into the surrounding ground areas of Demeniss.
It also opens up the next Abyss in The Wanderer’s Way cluster — Origin of Thoughts — which has its own Abyss Artifact and puzzle. Check our Origin of Thought puzzle guide once you’re ready for that one.
Storm Veil is also worth upgrading with the Pillar of Wind Abyss gear once you have it available. With that equipped, your ground slam tornado lingers longer and stuns enemies inside it, and your smoke screen can fully immobilize trapped enemies rather than just breaking their aggro. That turns Storm Veil from a utility escape into a genuine crowd control setup tool.
The Four Elements in Crimson Desert
Storm Veil is one of four elements in the game. Here’s a quick overview of all of them and what they do:
Wind (Storm Veil) — drops a smoke cloud, breaks aggro, great for escape and repositioning. Unlocked via Spire of Clockwork and Riddle Square.
Lightning (Lightning Surge) — spawns electric tentacles that paralyze and stun enemies. Especially strong against shielded enemies whose guard blocks physical strikes. Unlocked via the Spire of the Stars and Courtyard of Precision.
Frost (Frost Mantle) — freezes enemies in place. Unlocked via the Spire of Ringing Truth and Path of Trials.
Flame (Flame Strike) — area-of-effect burning damage. Unlocked from the Tree of Slumber Abyss after completing the Frost path.
Unlocking an element on any one character unlocks it for all three — Kliff, Damiane, and Oongka. You don’t need to repeat the process per character. To learn how to use all four in combat effectively, our full elemental attacks and Imbue guide covers every element in detail.
