TL;DR
- Izvatu Fortress is part of The Dusksongs quest in the Crimson Desert region, accessible in Chapter 9
- Beat Samura first before focusing on clearing the fortress — she’s inside at the center
- Use Nature’s Grasp to open the gate into Samura’s arena
- Samura fights with a rifle and smoke bombs — wait for her to crouch and aim, then roll toward her when her gun sparks and punish her in the recovery window
- Use entrances beneath the castle as cover when she climbs to high ground
- After Samura falls, clear the enemy camp north of the main gate to fill the liberation meter
- Your reward is the Shadow Contract key item
- Dying during enemy clearing does not reset your progress — keep grinding
Izvatu Fortress is one of the most memorable objectives in the Crimson Desert region. It’s packed with rifle-armed enemies, has a boss who fights from range with explosive shots and mobility tricks, and the liberation itself is a long grind. Most players walk in expecting a standard camp clear and get caught off guard by both Samura and the sheer volume of enemies outside.
This guide breaks down every step — where the fortress is, how to get to Samura, how to beat her, and the most efficient way to finish the liberation.
Where Is Izvatu Fortress?
Izvatu Fortress sits in the Crimson Desert region — the game’s namesake sandy expanse far to the northeast of Hernand. The fortress is clearly marked on the map once you’ve cleared enough fog of war in that area. You’ll typically arrive here naturally during Chapter 9, when the main story brings Kliff into the Crimson Desert.
The area belongs to The Dusksongs questline. If you haven’t triggered that quest yet, progress through the Crimson Desert region’s faction and story content. The fortress shows up as a red hostile location on your map.
If you need to clear the fog over this region first, check our Crimson Desert All Bell Tower Locations — Toll of Pywel guide. The Toll of Tommaso bell in the city to the southwest clears fog across a wide section of the Crimson Desert, including the area around Izvatu.
Getting there is the easy part. Activate any nearby Abyss Nexus on your way in so you have a fast travel point close to the fortress — you may need to return. See our How to Fast Travel in Crimson Desert guide if you’re unsure how that system works.
Before You Go In — Preparation
Izvatu Fortress is full of rifle-armed enemies who shoot from distance. This isn’t a standard sword-and-shield brawl. You’ll need solid health, strong healing items, and quick dodging to survive both Samura and the post-boss grind. A few things to sort before entering:
Bring plenty of food. Samura’s explosive rounds hit hard, and the liberation grind means taking damage across many fights. Stock at least 100 pieces of grilled meat before walking in. Our How to Cook Best Healing Food in Crimson Desert guide covers the most efficient options.
Max your health and stamina. The more health you have, the more of Samura’s shots you survive. Stamina keeps your dodge rolls going. See our How to Get Max Health in Crimson Desert and How to Get Max Stamina in Crimson Desert guides.
Have Blinding Flash and Turning Slash ready. These are your best damage tools against Samura — fast, heavy-hitting, and easy to use in tight windows. Our How to Use Blinding Flash in Crimson Desert guide covers the ability in detail.
Stock Palmar Pills if you can. The boss fight doesn’t reset on death, but losing your healing mid-fight is painful. Having a Palmar Pill as backup insurance means one bad hit won’t end the run. See our How to Get and Use Palmar Pills in Crimson Desert guide.

Step 1: Find and Enter Samura’s Arena
When you arrive at Izvatu Fortress, fight Samura before worrying about the liberation meter. She’s the boss of this area and the main objective. The enemy clearing comes after.
From the fortress entrance, follow the winding stairs upward toward the center of the structure. The path leads you through the fortress interior. When you reach the gate blocking your way forward, use Nature’s Grasp to pull it open. This drops you into an arena filled with pots.
That’s Samura’s arena. She’s waiting inside.

Step 2: How to Beat Samura, the Sandwatcher
Samura is a marksman boss. She uses a rifle, smoke bombs, and high ground to her advantage. This is a fight built on patience and reading her cooldowns — not on relentless aggression.
Understand Her Main Moves:
Rifle shots from close range. Samura will crouch down, take aim, and fire. The critical tell is when her gun sparks — that’s the moment to act. Roll toward Samura when her gun sparks. Rolling into her instead of away closes the gap and puts you inside her shot arc, meaning the bullet misses. The moment she fires and misses, move in immediately with your hardest-hitting attacks — Turning Slash and Blinding Flash Finisher are the best tools here. Then back off before her next aim cycle begins.
Smoke bombs and repositioning. Samura doesn’t stay in one spot. She regularly throws smoke bombs to disengage, reposition, and leap to a vantage point above the arena. When she does this, don’t chase blindly.
Explosive barrages from high ground. When Samura climbs to an elevated position, she opens up with explosive shots that blanket the ground below. These are very difficult to dodge consistently when you’re standing in the open. Instead, move under the castle structure and use the entrances and archways as cover. The overhangs block her line of sight and prevent most of the barrage from hitting you. Wait under cover until she comes back down, then re-engage.
The Core Strategy:
This whole fight is about timing your punish windows. You are not fighting Samura in extended trades — you are waiting for her crouch animation, dodging her shot by rolling toward her, and punishing her briefly before she recovers. Then repeat.
Every time she repositions with a smoke bomb, reset your position and wait for her next crouch. Don’t chase her when she has the height advantage. The cover tactic under the castle structure is your lifeline during her elevated phase.
Keep your healing available. Samura’s explosive shots can hit for significant chunks of health if you misjudge a dodge, so eating food regularly during the fight is important. You can heal while moving, so stay active.
When Samura’s health is depleted, the fight ends and she drops the Shadow Contract key item as a reward.

Step 3: Liberate Izvatu Fortress
With Samura down, the quest shifts to liberating the fortress itself. A green liberation meter appears on the left side of your screen — you need to drain it to 0% by killing the enemies stationed at and around Izvatu.
Here’s what you need to know about how this works:
The main enemy concentration is north of the main gate. There’s a large camp outside the front of Izvatu Fortress packed with hostile soldiers. This is where you should focus the bulk of your clearing efforts. Each enemy kill contributes roughly 1% to the liberation meter.
Destroying buildings inside the fortress doesn’t help much. You’ll see the Infirmary, Training Ground, and Barracks as destructible structures inside the fortress. While you can destroy them, they don’t seem to contribute meaningfully to liberation progress. Don’t waste time demolishing buildings when there are soldiers to fight.
Dying doesn’t reset your progress. This is the most important thing to know about the liberation phase. If you go down, you respawn and your liberation percentage stays where it was. Don’t be discouraged by dying — just get back in and keep clearing. Push through the camp, respawn when needed, and chip away at the meter.
The meter can increase if reinforcements arrive. More enemies joining Izvatu while you’re clearing can push the percentage back up slightly. Keep moving and prioritise killing enemies faster than reinforcements can spawn.
Bring Oongka or Damiane if you’re struggling. You can call your comrades to fight alongside you during the liberation phase — though not during the actual Samura boss fight itself. If the camp is overwhelming you solo, switching to a supported approach can help thin the numbers faster.
Keep grinding and clearing north of the gate. Once the meter hits 0%, a cutscene triggers and Izvatu Fortress is officially liberated.
Rewards: What You Get
Shadow Contract (Key Item) — Dropped by Samura. This item is intended to let you steal without being caught for 1 minute with a cooldown between uses. It’s tied to the stealth system. Note that at the time of writing, this item appears to be bugged and may not function exactly as described. Keep it in case of a patch.
Liberating the fortress also opens up the area for normal exploration and removes the hostile status, meaning you can move through freely, use any nearby resources, and access whatever the fortress contains without being attacked.
Bounty Note
Depending on how you approached the fortress before the quest triggers, you may have picked up some bounty during the clearing fights. Our How to Remove Bounty in Crimson Desert guide explains how to clear that if needed. For context on how the bounty and stealing systems interact with the Shadow Contract, see our How to Steal Items in Crimson Desert guide.
