The Batcave is the heart of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. It is not just a loading screen between missions. It is a fully expandable hub where you upgrade gadgets, replay missions, buy suits, earn Stud rewards, and display every trophy and vehicle you collect across the game.
If you are not visiting it regularly, you are missing out on a lot. This guide covers every facility, every expansion, how much each one costs, what you can do inside, and where to find the collectibles hidden throughout the cave.
When Does the Batcave Unlock?
You gain access to the Batcave right at the start of Chapter 1. The Workbench, which is the upgrade station for gadgets, becomes available a bit later during the same chapter. At this early stage, the cave is mostly empty. There is not a lot to interact with yet.
The Batcave really opens up once you reach Chapter 2. That is when the major facilities come online — the Garage, the Suit Vault, the Challenge Board, the Bat-Mite Shop, the Training Area, the Batcomputer, and more. From Chapter 2 onward, the cave becomes a place you will want to visit between missions regularly.
Batcave Base Layout — What You Get Without Expansions
Even before you spend a single Stud on expansions, the base Batcave has a solid amount to explore. Here is what is available from the start:
- Main Floor: Your vehicles are displayed here. As you unlock more, the collection grows.
- Upper Main Area: This is where the Batcomputer sits. You can replay missions and check your progress from here.
- Challenge Board: Found further back on the upper level. This is where you track and claim optional challenges for Stud rewards.
- Bat-Mite Shop: Accessible from the start. Use Studs to buy suits and decorative Batcave items.
- Two Large Outfit Display Areas: These fill up automatically as you unlock costumes through the story and shop.
- Batman Symbol Signs: Scattered throughout the cave. Each one can be customized to whatever color you prefer.
All Batcave Facilities Explained
The Batcomputer
The Batcomputer is the most useful tool in the entire cave. It unlocks early in Chapter 2 and sits on the upper level. Interact with the chair to sit down and open the Case Log.
From here you can see every story mission you have completed and exactly what percentage of collectibles you have found in each one. If a mission shows a yellow box with a black checkmark, it is at 100%. Any mission below that still has items to find. This makes it easy to see exactly where you need to go back.
The Batcomputer is also where you launch mission replays. This is essential for going back to grab missed collectibles like Surfboards, Bonsai Trees, Disco Balls, and WayneTech Caches. Our guide on how to replay missions in LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight has full instructions on how the system works.
The Workbench
The Workbench is your gadget upgrade station. It unlocks during Chapter 1 and sits in a clearly marked area of the cave. You can also find Workbenches out in Gotham, so you do not always have to travel back to the cave to upgrade.
To upgrade, interact with the Workbench and select a character. Each character has their own upgrade tree. Upgrades cost WayneTech Chips — the currency you collect from WayneTech Cache chests hidden in missions and across Gotham. There are 160 WayneTech Caches in the open world and more inside missions.
Key upgrades to aim for early include Batman’s Batarang options — the Batarang Combo for hitting multiple enemies, the Concussive Batarang for crowd control, and the Sonic Batarang for disorienting tougher foes. Since Batman is always in your party, his upgrades pay off fastest.
For the full breakdown of what to prioritize, check out our guide on all playable characters in LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight, which covers each character’s gadget set.
The Garage
The Garage opens in Chapter 2 and is where you view and purchase vehicles. Vehicles you have already unlocked are displayed here. You can also buy additional ones with Studs.
There is a WayneTech Cache at the bottom of the shaft near the Garage, and another under the stairs leading into it. Keep these in mind when you start hunting Batcave collectibles. For a full look at what is available on four wheels, see our complete vehicles guide for LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight.

The Suit Vault
The Suit Vault is where every outfit you unlock is displayed. It opens in Chapter 2. You do not change suits directly here — it is more of a display and reference area. There is also a WayneTech Cache hidden in a small corridor attached to the Suit Vault, so look around carefully when you visit.
The game has over 100 suits based on costumes from across Batman’s entire history in comics, films, and TV. Suits are purely cosmetic and do not change your stats or abilities. For a full list of what is available, see our all suits guide for LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight.

The Bat-Mite Shop
Bat-Mite has his own shop tucked behind a passageway near the Gadget Workbench area. You first access it in Chapter 2 when Bat-Mite calls you on the Batphone and leads you to the shop entrance. To open it, you need to use Batman’s Explosive Spray on a brick wall near the elevator with the big Batman sign.
Once inside, you can buy new suits and decorative props for the Batcave using Studs. Bat-Mite will announce whenever new items become available in the shop, so check back regularly. If you are short on Studs, our guide on how to get rich fast and farm infinite Studs in LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight will help you stock up quickly.
There is also a WayneTech Cache hidden between the wall and the elevator outside the Bat-Mite Shop. Easy to miss on a first visit.

The Challenge Board
The Challenge Board is a large black screen with a computer, situated high up in the cave. It tracks optional gameplay challenges and lets you claim Stud rewards once you complete them.
Challenges are tied to specific actions — things like reaching a combat combo over 80, throwing an enemy into a dumpster, defeating 100 enemies without taking damage, and using character-specific abilities. You do not have to do anything special to start them. As you play through the story and explore Gotham, challenges complete automatically. A yellow star icon flashes on screen whenever one is done.
Each completed challenge rewards between 5,000 and 20,000 Studs. As you claim more, the board gradually fills with a large illustrated mural of Gotham. It is worth checking the board after every few missions to collect the Stud rewards you have earned.
The Training Area
The Training Area is one of the four paid expansions (see below). It costs 50,000 Studs and is the cheapest expansion in the game. Inside you will find workout benches, exercise machines, and a WayneTech Cache hidden in the area. You can also grapple to the top of the elevator near the Bat-Mite Shop and use the wooden planks above to reach a Minikit sitting above the Training Area.

All Four Batcave Expansions — Costs and What You Get
Four expansion robots are placed around the cave. Each one digs out a new section when you pay the Stud cost. All four become available starting in Chapter 2. Here is the full breakdown:
- Training Area — 50,000 Studs: The cheapest expansion. Adds workout benches and exercise machines. Also contains a WayneTech Cache and a Minikit collectible.
- Display Area — 75,000 Studs: Opens up trophy space for the MiniKit collectibles you earn during missions. This is where your themed Batcave trophies get displayed once you collect enough of a set.
- Science Area — 100,000 Studs: Adds testing machines and extra Workbenches. Contains a WayneTech Cache in a small alcove to the left of the entrance.
- Clean Slate Area — 100,000 Studs: This room is completely empty by design. It is a blank canvas to build and customize however you like using props and decorations from the Bat-Mite Shop.
Once all four expansions are purchased, the full cave opens up and every hidden Minikit and WayneTech Cache inside becomes reachable. Some collectibles require expansions before they are accessible, so do not expect to find everything on your first visit to the base cave.
Tip: Do not spend all your Studs at once on expansions. Leave enough to also buy items from the Bat-Mite Shop and upgrade at the Workbench. Farm Studs consistently through exploration and Batcave challenges rather than blowing everything in one go.

Batcave Collectibles — Minikits and WayneTech Caches
The Batcave contains 10 Minikits and 10 WayneTech Caches hidden throughout the cave. Collecting all 10 Minikits and all 10 WayneTech Caches earns you the A Watchful Collector achievement and counts toward 100% completion.
A few things to note:
- Some collectibles sit near the ceiling or behind elevated platforms. Gliding and grappling are essential for reaching them. For tips on traversal, check out our guide on how to unlock the glider in LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight.
- One Minikit is in a ring near the ceiling. Use the air vents at the top of the elevator by the Bat-Mite Shop to get a boost, then glide to it.
- There is a Minikit above the Batman logo on the north side of the cave. Grapple to the platform to reach it.
- Grapple above the Garage to find another Minikit on a ring.
- One WayneTech Cache requires Robin, who only unlocks in Chapter 3. Come back after he joins your crew.
- The Science Lab and Display Area expansions must be purchased before some collectibles become reachable.
- There is a hidden fishing spot beneath the walkways that most players miss entirely. Look near the water edge in the Clean Slate area.
Tip: Spend a Gold Skill Brick to unlock the Collectible Detective skill. It highlights nearby collectibles and saves a huge amount of aimless wandering around the expanded cave.
Batcave Trophies — What They Are and How to Get Them
Batcave Trophies are decorative collectibles that display inside the cave once you collect enough of a themed set. Each themed item type comes from a specific mission type — things like Surfboards, Bonsai Trees, Disco Balls, Cat Heads, Rubber Ducks, Ace Cards, Boomboxes, Cakes, Kites, and more.
Collecting all items in a set unlocks that themed trophy for display in the Batcave. It is worth noting that some of these are mission-specific and can be missed on a first playthrough. That is exactly why the Batcomputer replay feature exists.
There is also a separate set of Bat-Symbols scattered around Gotham. These are glowing coins with Batman’s logo on them. They do not appear on the map, so they are easy to miss. Collecting them progressively builds a giant T-Rex inside the Batcave — a nod to a classic Batman comic moment. Collect 25 of them and you also unlock the “The idea was to be a symbol” trophy or achievement.

- Infiltration bonsai tree locations
- Mimes Cat Head and Red Brick locations
- Penguin Rubber Duck and Red Brick locations
How to Farm Studs for Batcave Expansions
All four expansions combined cost 325,000 Studs. That is a significant amount. Here is how to build up your Stud count efficiently:
- Complete Batcave Challenges: Each one pays 5K–20K Studs. These stack up fast if you claim them regularly.
- Smash everything in Gotham: Crates, objects, and street items all drop Studs when destroyed.
- Activate Red Bricks: Some Red Bricks apply Stud multipliers that make every Stud you pick up worth more. These are one of the most powerful ways to farm fast.
- Complete side activities: Finding lost zoo animals, activating fast travel points, and completing side quests all reward Studs and sometimes WayneTech Chips as well.

Quick Tips for Getting the Most Out of the Batcave
- Visit the Batcave after every couple of missions to check the Challenge Board and claim Stud rewards you have earned passively.
- Buy the Training Area first. It is the cheapest expansion and opens up a WayneTech Cache and Minikit right away.
- Do not neglect the Bat-Mite Shop. Some suit unlocks are only available through the shop, not story progression.
- Check the Batcomputer regularly for collectible percentages. It shows exactly which missions need revisiting.
- Robin is required for one WayneTech Cache inside the cave. Wait until he joins in Chapter 3 before doing a full cache sweep.
- Use the Collectible Detective skill to save time when hunting the Batcave’s hidden items.
Batcave and the Broader Game
Everything you do in Gotham feeds back into the Batcave. Suits you unlock go into the Suit Vault. Vehicles go into the Garage. Trophies you earn fill the Display Area. Challenges you complete build the mural on the Challenge Board. The cave grows with you throughout the whole campaign.
If you are going for full completion, the Batcave is where you track your progress and plan your next move. Use the Batcomputer to identify gaps, the Workbench to stay upgraded, and the Challenge Board to keep earning passive Studs.
