Nilou is a 5-star Hydro Sword character from Sumeru in Genshin Impact. She is the Star of Zubayr Theater — Sumeru’s most beloved dancer, performing at the Grand Bazaar and headlining the annual Sabzeruz Festival. She is graceful and luminous on stage, and warm and approachable off it — exactly the kind of person everyone in the city has a story about seeing dance for the first time.

She became playable in Version 3.1, released on September 28, 2022. Her constellation is Lotos Somno and her birthday falls on December 3. She was also announced as a free 5-star character available through Genshin Impact’s sixth anniversary 5-star character selector event launching on September 23, 2026, giving many players their first opportunity to obtain her at no Primogem cost.

In combat, Nilou is the defining support for Bloom reaction teams. Her passive upgrades every Dendro Core that her team produces into a Bountiful Core — a more powerful, faster-exploding, wider-radius version that scales directly with her Max HP. Understanding Nilou’s Core Mechanic — Bountiful Cores

Before getting into the build, it helps to understand exactly what Nilou does and why it matters. This is the foundation of everything she contributes.

In standard Bloom teams, when a Hydro and Dendro reaction occurs, a Dendro Core appears on the field. These Cores have a short timer before they detonate and deal Dendro DMG to nearby enemies. The damage they deal is determined by the Elemental Mastery of whoever triggered the Bloom reaction, and they cannot CRIT.

Nilou transforms this entirely. Her Elemental Skill, when completed to its third step with an all-Hydro/Dendro team, grants the party the Golden Chalice’s Bounty. Under this effect:

• Every Bloom reaction the party triggers creates a Bountiful Core instead of a Dendro Core
• Bountiful Cores detonate almost immediately rather than waiting for the timer
• Bountiful Cores have a larger explosion radius, hitting more enemies in crowded fights
• The damage of Bountiful Cores scales with Nilou’s Max HP through her 4th Ascension Passive
• Party members hit by Dendro attacks gain 100 Elemental Mastery for 10 seconds

The trade-off: Bountiful Cores cannot trigger Hyperbloom or Burgeon. They are pure Bloom damage and nothing else. This is why Nilou teams are strictly Hydro + Dendro — any other element breaks the Golden Chalice’s Bounty and eliminates her primary buff.

Nilou Skills and Abilities

Normal Attack – Dance of Samser

Nilou performs up to three consecutive sword strikes. Her Charged Attack consumes stamina for two rapid sword swings. Her Plunging Attack deals AoE DMG on landing. Normal Attacks are not a meaningful part of her support rotation and are never prioritized for talent investment.

Elemental Skill – Dance of Haftkarsvar

This is Nilou’s most important ability. When activated, she enters a Pirouette State where her Normal Attacks and Elemental Skill are replaced by unique dance steps. She performs up to three dance steps, and the third step’s type determines the follow-up effect:

• Whirling Steps (ends with Elemental Skill input — recommended): Deals Hydro DMG based on Nilou’s Max HP and grants the active character a Tranquility Aura — a continuous Hydro application aura that applies Wet to nearby enemies for its duration. This is the preferred ending for Bloom support Nilou because the Tranquility Aura provides consistent passive Hydro application without needing Nilou on the field.
• Sword Dance (ends with Normal Attack input): Deals Hydro DMG in a different pattern with a Luminous Illusion follow-up hit. More useful for on-field DPS Nilou playstyles where she stays active longer.

After completing the third dance step with an all-Hydro/Dendro party (at least one of each), Nilou applies the Golden Chalice’s Bounty to all nearby party members for 30 seconds. This is the core buff that enables Bountiful Cores. Refreshing it before the 30-second window expires is the primary goal of Nilou’s rotation.

Elemental Burst – Dance of Abzendegi: Distant Dreams, Listening Spring

Nilou performs a beautiful dance sequence and deals AoE Hydro DMG to nearby enemies, followed by a second instance of Hydro DMG after a brief delay. The Burst provides additional Hydro application and is worth using when her energy allows, especially since it can activate Noblesse Oblige effects if she carries that set. It costs 70 Energy, making Energy Recharge a relevant secondary stat.

Passive Talents

• Court of Dancing Petals (1st Ascension — Most Important): When all party members are Hydro or Dendro (with at least one of each), completing the third step of Dance of Haftkarsvar grants all nearby party members the Golden Chalice’s Bounty for 30 seconds. This is the passive that creates Bountiful Cores. It is the reason Nilou’s entire team must be Hydro + Dendro exclusively.
• Dreamy Dance of Aeons (4th Ascension — Damage Scaling): Every 1,000 Max HP Nilou has above 30,000 increases the damage dealt by Bountiful Cores by 9%, up to a maximum increase of 400%. • Utility Passive – White Jade Lotus: When Nilou cooks Perfect Quality dishes with Adventure-related effects (stamina or temperature reduction), she has a chance to produce double the amount. A useful cooking passive for exploration preparation.

Best Nilou Build in Genshin Impact

Nilou’s build is the most singular in the game. One stat matters above all others: Max HP. Everything else is secondary. She does not need CRIT stats — Bountiful Cores cannot CRIT. She does not need Elemental Mastery as a primary focus — her Bountiful Core damage scales with HP, not EM. She does not need ATK%. Only HP, and enough Energy Recharge to use her Burst when needed.

Standard Support Build (Best)

• Artifact Set: 2-piece Tenacity of the Millelith + 2-piece Vourukasha’s Glow

• Substat Priority: HP% → Energy Recharge (around 170% average) → flat HP

Both Tenacity of the Millelith and Vourukasha’s Glow offer 20% HP from their 2-piece bonus, and combining them gives a flat 40% HP increase across both sets. This is the simplest way to push Nilou’s HP as high as possible. The team ATK buff from Tenacity’s 4-piece would require using her Skill constantly to maintain it — the 2-piece combination is more reliable and flexible.

Alternative: 4-piece Vourukasha’s Glow

For highly invested Nilou players who already meet the HP threshold without relying on artifact set bonuses, 4-piece Vourukasha’s Glow provides a DMG Bonus that scales with incoming damage taken — useful in Bloom teams where Cores occasionally chip the active character’s HP.

Alternative: Silken Moon’s Serenade

In Lunar-Bloom compositions with characters like Lauma or Columbina, this set can provide additional benefits through its Verdant Dew stacking mechanics for Nilou’s Burst interactions. Only consider this if already at the HP cap through other means.

Best Weapons for Nilou

Nilou exclusively wants HP% from her weapon. Every worthwhile weapon choice either boosts HP directly or provides EM/ER that helps the team indirectly.

• Key of Khaj-Nisut (5-star, Best-in-Slot): Her signature weapon and the clear best-in-slot. It provides a 20% HP increase as a passive and after her Elemental Skill hits enemies, grants further HP% bonuses and converts a portion of her Max HP into Elemental Mastery for the team. Both effects directly scale her Bountiful Core damage and provide passive EM buffing for the party. The clear top choice by a significant margin.
• The Dockhand’s Assistant (4-star, Best Practical Option): HP% substat. The passive provides energy restoration on Skill hits, easing her ER requirements while keeping her HP high. As a 4-star weapon it is far more accessible than Key of Khaj-Nisut and performs close behind in pure HP builds. The recommended option for most F2P and low-spending players.
• Primordial Jade Cutter (5-star): CRIT Rate substat with an HP-based ATK conversion. The HP boost helps her Bountiful Core scaling even though the CRIT is wasted on Bloom damage. A solid alternative if you already own it and lack Key of Khaj-Nisut.
• Freedom-Sworn (5-star): Elemental Mastery substat with reaction-triggered team buffs — ATK% and Normal Attack speed for the party after two reactions. Useful in teams where the carries benefit from those buffs, though it does not directly push her HP the way Key of Khaj-Nisut does.
• Iron Sting (4-star, Craftable): Elemental Mastery substat that boosts Elemental DMG after triggering a reaction. A craftable option that indirectly helps Bloom by boosting EM. Not as strong as Dockhand’s Assistant for pure HP builds but accessible to all players.

Every Nilou team must contain only Hydro and Dendro characters to activate Golden Chalice’s Bounty. No exceptions. Even one non-Hydro/Dendro character immediately disables her passive.

Premium Bloom Team

Nilou / Nahida / Kokomi / Lauma or Collei

The strongest Nilou Bloom lineup. Nahida provides the best Dendro application in the game, constantly marking enemies and applying Dendro through her Seeds of Skandha off-field. Kokomi applies Hydro while healing the team — essential since Bloom Cores occasionally chip the active character’s HP. The fourth slot can be Lauma for Lunar-Bloom conversions and additional Dendro, or Collei for off-field Dendro support. Classic Bloom Team (Reliable)

Nilou / Nahida / Kokomi / Yaoyao or Kirara

A proven and comfortable composition. Yaoyao provides off-field Dendro through her radishes and heals alongside Kokomi. Kirara provides Dendro application and a shield that absorbs Dendro damage with 250% effectiveness — ideal for protecting the team from Bloom Core self-damage. Budget Bloom Team (F2P)

Nilou / Dendro Traveler / Barbara / Collei

A fully free-to-play Nilou team. Dendro Traveler applies off-field Dendro through their Burst. Collei provides additional Dendro application. Barbara heals while applying Hydro. Nilou maintains Golden Chalice’s Bounty. This team performs noticeably lower than the premium version but is fully capable of clearing most Spiral Abyss content at moderate investment levels and costs zero Primogems.

Dual Hydro Team

Nilou / Nahida / Kokomi / Furina

Adding Furina provides exceptional Hydro application, off-field coordinated Hydro attacks, and her Fanfare buff that amplifies all party damage based on HP fluctuations. Since Bloom Cores chip the team’s HP slightly and heals then bring it back up, Furina stacks Fanfare passively throughout the fight. Both Furina and Nilou are HP-scaling characters, making this a high-investment but extremely powerful combination for AoE content.

Nilou Constellations Guide

Nilou is fully functional at C0. Her Bountiful Core mechanic is entirely unlocked from her base kit. Constellations improve her Hydro application, team damage, and energy management. Here is a breakdown:

• C1 – Dance of the Waning Moon: Dance of Haftkarsvar’s Luminous Illusion DMG is increased by 65%, and the Tranquility Aura’s duration is extended by 6 seconds. The longer Tranquility Aura duration means fewer Skill refreshes are needed in each rotation, giving other characters more time to act before Nilou needs to return and reapply. The DMG boost to Luminous Illusion also increases her on-field damage contribution. A solid quality-of-life constellation that slightly improves rotation flexibility.
• C2 – The Starry Skies Their Flowers Rain (Best and Most Impactful): After characters affected by Golden Chalice’s Bounty deal Hydro DMG to an enemy, that enemy’s Hydro RES is decreased by 35% for 10 seconds. Additionally, after a Bloom or Lunar-Bloom reaction deals damage to an enemy, their Dendro RES is decreased by 35% for 10 seconds. These debuffs apply constantly as long as Nilou’s Bloom team is operating normally — Hydro DMG and Bloom damage are occurring every few seconds. The result is a permanent 35% Hydro RES shred and 35% Dendro RES shred on all enemies hit by the team’s reactions. This is a massive and unconditional team damage increase that elevates every character in the lineup. C2 is the clear premium stopping point and transforms Nilou from a strong support into one of the most impactful enablers in the game.
• C3 – Chloris With Flowers: Increases the talent level of Dance of Haftkarsvar (Elemental Skill) by 3. Boosts the Hydro DMG from the Skill’s dance steps and the Tranquility Aura. Useful but not transformative.
• C4 – Twirling Lotus: When Nilou is hit while in Pirouette state during Dance of Haftkarsvar, she gains 6 Energy. This can trigger once every 0.6 seconds. Helps significantly with energy management during her Skill window, reducing the need for Energy Recharge from artifacts.
• C5 – Moonlit Lotus: Increases the talent level of Dance of Abzendegi (Elemental Burst) by 3. Boosts Burst damage output.
• C6 – Frostbreaker’s Melody: For every 1,000 Max HP Nilou has, her CRIT Rate increases by 0.6% and her CRIT DMG increases by 1.2%, up to a maximum of 30% CRIT Rate and 60% CRIT DMG. This allows her on-field Sword Dance Hydro hits to CRIT, making an on-field DPS Nilou build more viable in Vaporize or Electro-Charged compositions. In Bloom teams, this constellation has minimal value since Bountiful Cores still cannot CRIT. It is a significant upgrade for non-Bloom Nilou builds.

Investment priority: C2 is the single most important constellation by a wide margin. C1 is a comfortable quality-of-life upgrade. C0 is already excellent for Bloom teams. C6 opens up alternative team archetypes for players willing to invest heavily.

Nilou Talent Priority

Here is the correct order to invest talent materials for Nilou:

1. Elemental Burst – Dance of Abzendegi (First if playing off-field) or Elemental Skill – Dance of Haftkarsvar (First if playing on-field): These two talents are roughly equal in priority depending on how much time Nilou spends on the field. For pure off-field support, level the Burst first for its Hydro DMG and HP scaling. For on-field play, level the Skill first for the dance step damage and Tranquility Aura scaling.
2. The other of Skill or Burst (Second).
3. Normal Attack – Dance of Samser (Skip): Talent levels here do not affect Bountiful Core damage. Normal Attacks are not used in Nilou’s support rotation. Do not spend talent books here.

Important note: talent levels do not directly increase Bountiful Core damage. The Bountiful Core damage bonus from her 4th Ascension Passive scales only with Max HP, not with talent level. Investing in talents improves her Skill and Burst hits only — worthwhile but not the highest priority compared to building HP.

How to Play Nilou – Rotation and Tips

Nilou’s rotation has two modes depending on whether she is used primarily off-field (Whirling Steps) or on-field (Sword Dance).

Standard Off-Field Support Rotation (Whirling Steps):

1. Swap to Nilou and use her Elemental Skill — press the Skill button three times (entering Pirouette, then using the third step as a Skill input to choose Whirling Steps).
2. The Tranquility Aura activates, passively applying Hydro to nearby enemies for its duration.
3. If her Burst is ready, use it for additional Hydro application before swapping out.
4. Swap to your Dendro characters (Nahida, Collei, etc.) to apply Dendro. When Dendro meets the Hydro aura or vice versa, Bountiful Cores immediately form and detonate.
5. Let your Hydro healer (Kokomi or Barbara) stay on field if needed, or bring them in briefly to maintain Hydro application when the Tranquility Aura nears expiration.
6. Before Golden Chalice’s Bounty expires (30-second window), swap back to Nilou and refresh it with another Skill sequence.

Key rotation tip: always end Nilou’s Skill with the Elemental Skill input (Whirling Steps) in Bloom builds. Ending with Normal Attacks (Sword Dance) gives less off-field Hydro application. The Tranquility Aura from Whirling Steps passively keeps enemies wet between rotations, which is what allows Bloom Cores to form constantly without Nilou being on the field.

Character Ascension Materials

• Varunada Lazurite (Sliver, Fragment, Chunk, Gemstone) — The standard Hydro ascension gem. Farmed from Hydro world bosses like the Hydro Hypostasis, Rhodeia of Loch, and Hydro-dripping weekly bosses. The Aeonblight Drake also drops Varunada Lazurite, making it a dual-farm boss for Nilou’s two main ascension materials.
• Perpetual Caliber — Dropped by the Aeonblight Drake world boss, found in an underground cave in Devantaka Mountain, Sumeru. Bring Bow users to knock it out of the sky efficiently during its aerial phases. You need 46 total for full ascension.
• Padisarah — A local specialty flower from Sumeru, found around Sumeru City, Pardis Dhyai, Vanarana, and the Palace of Alcazarzaray. Only around 68 can be found in a single world, requiring multiple harvest cycles (they respawn in 48 hours). One shopkeeper, Jut, at the Grand Bazaar in Sumeru City sells up to 5 Padisarahs every three days for 1,000 Mora each. You need 168 total. Having Tighnari or Sethos in your party highlights local specialties on the minimap, making farming faster.
• Fungal Drops (Fungal Spore, Luminescent Pollen, Crystalline Cyst Dust) — Dropped by Fungi enemies throughout Sumeru’s jungle and desert. Critically: do not use Pyro or Electro attacks on Fungi. These elements put Fungi into an Activated or Scorched state and change their drop table, giving you the wrong materials. Use any other element or Physical damage to guarantee the correct drops. You need 18 Spores, 30 Pollens, and 36 Dusts for ascension.

Talent Ascension Materials

• Books of Praxis (Teachings, Guide, Philosophies of Praxis) — Farmed from the Steeple of Ignorance domain near Chatrakam Cave in Sumeru, available on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. You need 9 Teachings, 63 Guides, and 114 Philosophies to max one talent.
• Fungal Drops — Same Fungi enemy drops as above. Additional large quantities needed for talent upgrades on top of the ascension quantities.
• Tears of the Calamitous God — Dropped by the Magatsu Mitake Narukami no Mikoto (Raiden Shogun) weekly boss in Inazuma. You need 18 total to fully max all three talents. Convert other Raiden boss drops using Dream Solvent if you receive the wrong material.
• Crown of Insight — One per crowned talent. Obtained from limited events, the Tree of Dreams in Sumeru, the Sacred Sakura in Inazuma, and Archon Quest milestones.

Nilou Lore and Story

Nilou comes from an ordinary family in Sumeru — not scholars, not nobility, just a family of three who loved each other deeply and never put academic pressure on their daughter in a city defined by academic pressure. Her parents supported her interests without question, and what Nilou turned out to be interested in was dance.

She was eight years old when she first saw her teacher perform at the Sabzeruz Festival. The Knight of Flowers had given her Yalda Candies, and with her hands full of sweets she stumbled across the newly built Zubayr Theater in the Grand Bazaar. There, she saw a dancer on stage and thought it looked like a thousand flowers blooming without any flowers being there at all. She dropped her candies without realizing it and danced along. When the music stopped, she apologized to the audience members who had made room for her. Her teacher stepped off the stage, picked up the candies, and asked: “Would you like to join me in a future dance?”

Under that teacher’s instruction, Nilou became the star of Zubayr Theater. She is Sumeru’s most prominent figure in a world where art is considered frivolous compared to scholarship. The Akademiya has repeatedly questioned the value of theater and tried to shut down or restrict the performances at the Grand Bazaar. Nilou has fought back — not with academic arguments, but with the sheer power of what her dancing does to people who see it. She challenges the Akademiya in her Story Quest, Lotos Somno Chapter, and wins by demonstrating that art provides something wisdom alone cannot.

Nilou is also one of the devoted followers of Lesser Lord Kusanali — one of the few in Sumeru who celebrates the Sabzeruz Festival as what it is supposed to be: the Dendro Archon’s birthday. Her performance at the festival is what sets the Sumeru Archon Quest in motion. When she dances for the goddess, Nilou genuinely means it as an act of worship and love, not performance.

The Padisarah flowers she uses in her ascension carry meaning too. Nilou herself notes in the Archon Quest that Padisarahs have not grown in their original color since the death of the Goddess of Flowers. Some players have theorized a connection between Nilou and that legend — she is, after all, a dancer who makes flowers bloom wherever she steps.

Is Nilou Worth Pulling in Genshin Impact?

Yes — especially now that she is available as a free character through Genshin Impact’s 6th anniversary selector event, giving many players their first chance to obtain her without spending Primogems. She is the single most important character for Bloom-based team compositions. No other character in the game unlocks Bountiful Cores or scales them the way she does.

Her design is intentionally specialized — she only works in Hydro + Dendro teams, and she works extraordinarily well there.
