Who Is Adler in NTE?

Adler is an A-Rank Incantation character in Neverness to Everness and the true pillar of the Eibon Antique Shop. He is described as “the perfect butler who brings peace of mind to everyone at Eibon and the neighborhood.” Multiple Anomaly Hunter organizations across Hethereau have attempted to recruit him over the years, but Adler steadfastly stays at Eibon — loyal, reliable, and quietly formidable.

He fights with a cane as his weapon and summons five Sunya phantoms named Rupa, Vedana, Sanna, Vinnana, and Sankhara. The Eibon crew likes to guess which Sunya is which — Adler rewards anyone who gets it right with handmade desserts. His fighting style is methodical and deliberate, preferring to avoid unnecessary conflict while remaining devastatingly effective when pushed into one.

In combat, Adler is NTE’s best free defensive support. He stacks Karma through basic attacks, spends it all on a shielding Skill that protects the entire active roster, applies DoT damage through the Scorch reaction, and debuffs enemies with his Support Skill. He is one of the most flexible team slots in the game and works in almost any lineup — especially valuable for F2P players who need survivability without spending on S-Rank supports.

How to Get Adler in NTE

Adler is completely free. He is the second free character most players receive after Mint, unlocked naturally through main story progression. You meet him shortly after visiting the Eibon Antique Shop at the start of the game, and he joins your roster automatically.

Because Adler is an A-Rank character, additional copies appear frequently on the Scarborough Fair gacha board. You have a higher than average chance of landing duplicates compared to S-Rank characters, making it realistic to fully max his Awakenings over time without heavy spending. He is one of the easiest characters to fully Awaken in the game.

Adler Playstyle – What Does Adler Do?

Adler is a hybrid shield support and Incantation sub-DPS. His primary job is to keep your team alive through a persistent shield called Blessing, which he applies when using his Redirect Skill — Evil’s Bane. This shield stays on the active character even after you swap to someone else, which is what makes Adler so universally useful. Any time your main DPS needs protection, you swap in Adler, build Karma, fire his Skill, and swap out knowing the next character is already shielded.

His secondary job is to apply pressure through Incantation DoT via the Scorch reaction and random debuffs from his Support Skill. The debuffs from his Temperance passive are especially useful — they can reduce enemy ATK by 20%, reduce Esper RES by 10%, or raise Break Efficiency by 10%, all for 15 seconds. The Break Efficiency debuff is particularly valuable in boss fights where breaking the enemy quickly matters.

Adler’s damage and shield strength both scale with DEF. This makes him one of the few characters in NTE where stacking a defensive stat directly increases your team’s offence as well as survival. You do not need CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG on Adler — just DEF, Shield Bonus, and Incantation DMG for secondary stats.

Understanding the Karma Mechanic

Karma is Adler’s unique resource. He can hold up to 20 stacks at a time, and stacks are built through his Basic Attack sequence:

  • Hitting an enemy with Basic Attack hits 1 through 3 (Deliverance) grants 1 Karma stack per hit.
  • Hitting an enemy with Liberation also grants 1 Karma stack.
  • Once awakened, his Ultimate (Tranquility) grants 20 Karma stacks instantly — filling the bar almost completely in one go.

When Adler uses his Redirect Skill — Evil’s Bane — he consumes all stored Karma. Every stack consumed adds 2% to his Skill DMG. A full 20 stacks means the Skill hits with 40% increased damage on top of its base multiplier. It also grants a shield to the active character immediately on cast. The stronger play is always to go into Evil’s Bane with as many stacks as possible, then swap to your main DPS immediately after the shield is applied so they benefit from the full Blessing protection window.

Adler Skills in NTE

Basic Attack – Deliverance

Adler wields his cane and performs up to 5 consecutive Incantation DMG hits. In aim mode, he fires a single-target Incantation DMG shot at the enemy in his crosshair. From the air, he can plunge and deal AoE Incantation DMG scaled by fall height, up to 100% bonus. After a Critical Dodge, the Ignorance counter triggers — a quick dash, seizing the enemy’s opening, and dealing 1 instance of AoE Incantation DMG while reducing Break. Basic attack hits 1 through 3 each grant 1 Karma stack, making the early part of Adler’s Basic combo the most important for resource building.

Redirect Skill – Evil’s Bane

Adler’s most important ability. He summons his Sunya phantoms to strike enemies, dealing 1 instance of Incantation DMG to an area and then inflicting Incantation DoT (Scorch) on all targets hit. On cast, he spends all stored Karma — each stack consumed adds 2% Skill DMG — and grants Blessing to the active character. Blessing is a shield that persists through swaps. When Blessing is active, the whole team gains 10% increased Incantation DMG from Adler’s passive. Immediately swap to your main DPS after casting Evil’s Bane to capitalize on the shield and the Incantation bonus window.

Ultimate – Tranquility

Adler summons all five Sunyas — Rupa, Vedana, Sanna, Vinnana, and Sankhara — to strike every enemy on the field. Each target takes 5 instances of Incantation DMG. If only one enemy remains, the Sunyas perform a second strike for a total of 10 instances of Incantation DMG on that target, making this an excellent single-target finisher. At Awakening A2 (Form), casting Tranquility instantly grants Adler 20 Karma stacks, making the Ultimate a direct setup for Evil’s Bane immediately after.

Support Skill – Temperance

Adler aims and fires a Compressed Round at the enemy, dealing 1 instance of Incantation DMG to an area. This triggers the Scorch Enhancement, applying one of three random debuffs to any enemy hit by Scorch: -20% ATK, -10% Esper RES, or +10% Break Efficiency. Each debuff lasts 15 seconds and the same effect cannot stack — but the randomness means you will cycle through all three over a longer fight. The +10% Break Efficiency debuff is the most sought-after in boss content as it makes breaking the enemy’s guard significantly faster.

Passive – Ignorance

Grants Adler 1 Karma stack when Deliverance or the counter attack hits an enemy. Grants 2 Karma stacks when Liberation hits. This is the passive engine behind Adler’s Karma building — it rewards staying in basic attack sequences and landing the full combo before swapping to Evil’s Bane.

Passive – The Team’s Incantation Buff

While the active character is protected by Blessing, the entire team gains 10% Incantation DMG. This buff is free — it just requires Adler’s shield to be active on the field. Since Blessing persists through swaps, any Incantation DPS on your team benefits from this bonus for the full duration of the shield without Adler needing to stay on field.

Best Arcs (Weapons) for Adler in NTE

Adler uses Bose-type Arcs only. Always check the Arc type before equipping — Solid, Liquid, Gas, and Plasma Arcs cannot be used on him.

Best Arc – Umbrella

Umbrella is Adler’s top Arc and the clearest best-in-slot for his shielding role. It boosts HP by 10% and strengthens shields by 10% while the wearer’s HP is above 50% — which Adler almost always is since he is primarily off-field. The DEF substat raises both his shield ratio and his Skill and Ultimate damage. The Rainman passive on Umbrella stacks directly with Adler’s shield-first playstyle, making every Evil’s Bane cast produce a noticeably stronger Blessing. This is the Arc you want for any content where team survivability matters.

Second Best – The Fool’s Spring

The Fool’s Spring provides a large DEF% increase — directly boosting both Adler’s shield strength and his Skill/Ultimate multipliers — and is easy to maintain since Adler’s own Skill produces a shield on cast. The synergy is clean: cast Evil’s Bane, apply shield, the Arc’s DEF buff activates because you now have a shield, and your next Evil’s Bane hits harder. A very strong F2P-accessible option.

Third Option – The Good, The Bad, The Bitter

This Arc improves Adler’s subsequent shielding after taking damage. It is a more defensive option suited for content where Adler takes hits himself rather than staying fully off-field. Less ideal than Umbrella or Fool’s Spring in most situations, but a viable filler if the others are unavailable.

Best Cartridge for Adler in NTE

Best – Kingdom’s Guard

Kingdom’s Guard is Adler’s ideal Cartridge. The 2-piece bonus gives DEF +15%. The 4-piece bonus increases the wearer’s shields by 20%. Both bonuses feed directly into what Adler does — the DEF boost raises his shield ratio and his Skill/Ultimate damage scaling, while the 20% shield increase makes every Blessing cast significantly tougher. This Cartridge is purpose-built for a DEF-scaling shield support and there is no better option for Adler in his primary support role.

Alternative – Crimson: Twin Butterflies

If you want to push Adler’s DoT damage rather than his shielding, Crimson: Twin Butterflies increases ATK while his DoT is ticking. Since Adler’s Scorch DoT from Evil’s Bane runs for 15 seconds, this ATK window stays active for most fights. It is a more offensively oriented option that sacrifices some shield strength for better personal Incantation damage output.

Best Modules for Adler in NTE

Adler’s console gains +12% DEF for each Type III Module equipped, so prioritize Type III Module shapes when building his grid. After activating the Kingdom’s Guard 4-piece set, fill remaining slots with Modules that have these substats:

  • DEF% — the single most important stat for Adler, raising both shield strength and Skill/Ultimate damage
  • Shield Bonus — directly amplifies every Blessing cast
  • Incantation DMG Bonus — boosts his DoT and Skill damage output
  • HP% — secondary survivability stat that also increases shield value slightly

Do not prioritize CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG on Adler unless you are building him as a secondary DPS. His damage scales with DEF, not CRIT stats, so investing in CRIT substats wastes the Module budget that should go toward DEF and Shield Bonus.

Best Awakening Priority for Adler in NTE

Adler’s Awakenings split into two build paths — one focused purely on shielding, and one that adds more offensive Karma value. The recommended order for most players balances both:

  • All Dharmas Are Empty Forms (A1) — First Priority: Extends the duration of Adler’s Blessing shield. This is his most immediately impactful Awakening. A longer-lasting shield means your main DPS has more time under protection between Adler rotations. Get this first.
  • Form (A2) — Second Priority: Adler gains 20 Karma stacks instantly when casting Tranquility. This transforms his Ultimate from a standalone damage ability into a direct Evil’s Bane setup — cast Ultimate, gain 20 stacks, immediately cast Skill for maximum Karma consumption and a fully powered shield. A huge quality-of-life and damage improvement.
  • No-Thought (A3) — Third Priority: Increases the shield value of Blessing itself. If you are using Adler purely as a shielder and running Kingdom’s Guard, this Awakening makes every shield cast meaningfully stronger, especially for harder endgame content.
  • A4, A5, A6: These vary in impact. A4 increases his Karma generation rate from Basic Attacks. A5 adds an offensive Incantation buff during Karma spend windows. A6 triggers a team-wide ATK boost when specific Karma thresholds are hit. All are worthwhile but lower urgency than A1, A2, and A3.

Shield-focused build shortcut: If you are using Adler purely for survivability, prioritize A3, A6, and A4 before A2 for maximum shield value output.

Skill Upgrade Priority for Adler in NTE

Upgrade Adler’s abilities in this order: Redirect Skill (Evil’s Bane) → Ultimate (Tranquility) → Basic Attack → Support Skill.

Evil’s Bane is both his main damage ability and his shield source — upgrading it raises the shield strength and the Skill’s damage multiplier simultaneously. Tranquility follows since it doubles as a Karma setup after A2. Basic Attack improvements help stack Karma faster. Support Skill is lowest priority since its debuffs are random and its damage is secondary.

How to Play Adler – Rotation Guide

Adler’s rotation is smooth and low-commitment. Here is the standard pattern:

  • Swap in Adler and use Basic Attacks to build Karma. Focus on hits 1 through 3 (Deliverance) — each grants 1 stack. Aim for close to 20 stacks before spending.
  • If Tranquility is charged, cast it first. At A2, this immediately grants 20 Karma stacks. Skip Basic Attack building and go straight to Evil’s Bane.
  • Cast Evil’s Bane to spend all Karma, deal scaled Incantation DMG, apply Scorch DoT, and grant Blessing to the active character.
  • Use Support Skill to fire Temperance and apply a random enemy debuff through the Scorch enhancement.
  • Swap to your main DPS immediately. The shield from Blessing follows the active character — your DPS is now protected while dealing damage.
  • While Adler is off-field, continue the DPS rotation normally. Return to Adler when Evil’s Bane is ready to repeat the cycle.

The key mindset with Adler is that he is a setup character. His most valuable moment is the second after Evil’s Bane lands — when the shield is fresh, the Karma damage has fired, Scorch is ticking, and your main DPS swaps in under full protection. Everything he does is building toward that window.

Best Team Compositions for Adler in NTE

Best F2P Team – Adler + Mint + Zero + Haniel

This is the strongest all-free lineup for Adler and one of the best beginner teams in the entire game. Mint is the main DPS dealing Anima damage. Zero supplies Cosmos and triggers Blossom reactions instantly. Adler provides Incantation shielding and Scorch DoT, which pairs with Mint and Adler to trigger the Hexed reaction. Haniel adds Psyche off-field damage and ATK buffs. Every character here is free from main story progression. This team covers two elemental reactions — Blossom and Hexed — while maintaining full survivability through Adler’s Blessing shield. It dominates story content, daily commissions, and early Abyss floors without any gacha investment.

Incantation-Focused Team – Adler + Baicang + Daffodil + Any Support

If you have Baicang and Daffodil from the gacha, Adler slots in perfectly as their third element for a Discord chain. Adler brings Incantation, Daffodil brings Chaos, and together they trigger Scorch. Daffodil and Fadia together trigger Nova. When Scorch and Nova are both active on the same target, Discord kicks in and starts rapidly shredding the enemy’s break bar. Adler’s Temperance debuffs — especially the +10% Break Efficiency proc — amplify this setup further. This is one of the strongest boss-clearing team configurations in NTE.

Budget Team – Adler + Zero + Edgar

A purely free lineup for players who want maximum survivability. Edgar brings Cosmos healing and damage. Zero handles Cosmos reactions. Adler covers Incantation shielding and DoT. No reactions are optimal here, but the team is extremely durable and functional through all story content and daily activities. Replace Edgar with an Anima or Lakshana character as soon as one becomes available to add Blossom or Remora to the rotation.

Adler as Defensive Flex – Any Team Needing Survivability

Adler’s greatest long-term value is his flexibility as a defensive slot. He fits into almost any team that needs a shielder but lacks an S-Rank support. His shield persists through swaps, his Incantation DoT adds passive damage, and his random debuffs always provide some form of useful team buff. In any team where you are struggling with survival — on Abyss floors, anomaly commissions, or boss fights — Adler is the free answer that works everywhere.

Is Adler Worth Building in NTE?

Yes — especially for F2P and low-spending players. Adler is the best free defensive support in NTE at launch. He is available to every player, easy to Awaken through the Scarborough Fair board, straightforward to build around DEF and Shield Bonus stats, and useful in every type of content from story missions to endgame boss hunts.

His damage output is not competitive with DPS characters and he gets outperformed by higher-investment S-Rank supports in raw buffing power. But no free character in the game provides what Adler provides — reliable team shielding that persists through swaps, Incantation DoT for Scorch reactions, and random debuffs that actively help your team deal more damage or break enemies faster.

Build him early, max A1 first for the extended shield duration, and he will serve your team reliably from day one through endgame. The community consensus is clear: pull Adler, Awaken him, and do not sleep on how much value a free shielder adds to every fight.

Ending Note

Adler is the kind of character every F2P player should build early and keep in rotation. He is free, flexible, easy to stat, and provides something no other free character offers — a persistent team shield that stays active through swaps. His Karma mechanic is simple once you understand it, his rotation is quick and low-risk, and his Scorch DoT with random debuffs adds real value to every team he joins. Get A1 first for the longer shield, follow up with A2 to turn his Ultimate into a Karma engine, stack DEF everywhere, and Adler will protect your team from the first quest to the hardest endgame content NTE throws at you.
