★★★★★ Hydro • Catalyst • Mondstadt
Character Overview
Mona is a 5-star Hydro character from Mondstadt who wields a Catalyst. The renowned Astrologist Mona Megistus is one of the most versatile and powerful support characters in Genshin Impact. Her defining strength is her Elemental Burst — Stellaris Phantasm — which applies an Omen debuff to enemies, granting a massive DMG Bonus to all attacks that hit them. Her A4 Passive uniquely converts 20% of her Energy Recharge into Hydro DMG Bonus, meaning stacking ER serves double duty. After receiving her Hexerei buffs in Version 6.2, Mona has expanded from a pure quickswap support into an active enabler with Vaporize amplification capabilities. Players who enjoy Mona might also be interested in Barbara, another Hydro character from Mondstadt. This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to maximize Mona’s potential in Genshin Impact.
Character Stats & Role
- Element: Hydro
- Weapon Type: Catalyst
- Rarity: 5 Stars ★★★★★
- Region: Mondstadt
- Best Role: Hydro Support / Burst Buffer / Hexerei Vaporize Enabler
⚡ Hexerei Buffs — What Changed in Version 6.2
After completing the Witch’s Homework: Of Untested Insight quest, Mona unlocks her Hexerei talents — active when at least one other Hexerei character is in the party (Durin, Venti, Klee, Albedo, Fischl, Sucrose, or Razor).
- Astral Glow of Mercury stacks — When Mona’s Normal or Charged Attacks hit enemies, she gains 1 stack (up to 3, each lasting 8s). When a party member triggers Vaporize, all stacks are consumed, increasing that Vaporize reaction’s damage by 15% per stack consumed — up to 45% total Vaporize DMG boost
- Extended Omen duration — Mona’s Normal and Charged Attacks can now extend the Omen debuff by 2 seconds per hit (max +8s total), massively improving uptime for the whole team’s damage window
- Constellation upgrades — C1, C2, and C4 all received significant Hexerei-tied buffs (see Constellations section)
These buffs transform Mona from a purely quickswap one-burst support into an active on-field Vaporize enabler with extended buff windows — most impactful in Vaporize teams featuring characters like Mualani, Arlecchino, or Mavuika.
Best Weapons for Mona
Mona’s weapon priority splits clearly between her two roles — pure quickswap support and Hexerei/on-field builds. The most important shift is that Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers (TTDS) is now recognized as her best support weapon in most off-field setups, not premium 5-star options.
Support Build Weapons
- Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers (3-star, R5) — Best-in-slot for pure support Mona against ATK-scaling DPS characters. At R5 it transfers a massive 48% ATK buff to the next character swapped in. Mona loses personal damage but the team-wide benefit outweighs any 5-star in support roles. Extremely F2P accessible
- Favonius Codex — Best when TTDS is less applicable (HP or DEF-scaling DPS) or when more ER is needed for reliable Burst uptime. Generates Energy for the whole team
- Wandering Evenstar — Good alternative ER weapon with some ATK buffing capability for the team
- Skyward Atlas — Best 5-star for support; high base ATK and a reliable passive, synergizes well with the quickswap playstyle
Sub-DPS / Hexerei Build Weapons
- Lost Prayer to the Sacred Winds — Best 5-star for on-field/DPS Mona; CRIT Rate substat and movement speed buff complement her dash-heavy playstyle
- Skyward Atlas — Strong alternative for Sub-DPS builds with reliable uptime
- The Widsith — Best 4-star for Sub-DPS; rotating buffs align well with Mona’s Burst windows. Underperforms in Electro-Charged teams
- Prototype Amber (Craftable) — Niche pick specifically with Song of Days Past artifact set; enables a healing-support role for Mona
F2P / Budget Option
Thrilling Tales of Dragon Slayers — Freely obtainable and genuinely best-in-slot for support builds. Favonius Codex is the best ER-focused F2P alternative for teams needing consistent Burst uptime over raw buffing.
⚠️ Note: Lost Prayer, Kagura’s Verity, and Memory of Dust are no longer Mona’s top 5-star picks for most builds. Kagura’s Verity has poor synergy since Mona rarely uses her Elemental Skill for damage. Memory of Dust requires a shielder to fully activate, which conflicts with many Mona team compositions. For pure support, the 3-star TTDS outperforms all of these in practice.
Best Artifacts for Mona
Mona’s best artifact set also varies by role. Her A4 Passive’s ER-to-Hydro DMG conversion means stacking Energy Recharge is always beneficial — even offensively. Aim for 200–300% Energy Recharge for reliable off-cooldown Burst uptime in support builds.
Primary Set — Support Build
Noblesse Oblige (4pc) — Best-in-slot for Mona’s support role. Provides a 20% DMG bonus for her Burst and a universal 20% ATK buff for the whole team on Burst cast. Mona is one of the best carriers of this set since her Burst is the centerpiece of every rotation.
Primary Set — Sub-DPS / Hexerei Build
Emblem of Severed Fate (4pc) — Best for Sub-DPS Mona. Converts Energy Recharge directly into Burst DMG — perfectly synergizing with her A4 Passive that also scales with ER. Aim for 200–250% ER for maximum effectiveness with this set.
Alternative Artifact Sets
- Tenacity of the Millelith (4pc) — Alternative support set when using TTDS; Mona’s off-field Phantom triggers the 4pc ATK buff. Less reliable than Noblesse due to shorter 3s duration requiring constant refresh
- Heart of Depth (4pc) — No longer recommended; requires on-field time Mona rarely has in support roles, and the Hydro DMG benefit is outclassed by Noblesse/Emblem in most scenarios
- Song of Days Past (4pc) — Niche support set exclusively for use with Prototype Amber; enables Mona to function as a healer-support hybrid
Main Stats Priority
Support Build: Sands: Energy Recharge | Goblet: Hydro DMG Bonus (or ATK% if ER is very high, as A4 covers Hydro DMG) | Circlet: CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG
Sub-DPS Build: Sands: ATK% or ER% | Goblet: Hydro DMG Bonus | Circlet: CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG
Substats Priority
Focus on: Energy Recharge (until 200–300% for support, 200–250% for Sub-DPS) > CRIT Rate = CRIT DMG > ATK%. Elemental Mastery is situationally valuable if Mona can consistently Vaporize her Burst and Charged Attacks in a dedicated setup.
Team Compositions
Mona excels in teams that deal massive frontloaded burst damage within her Omen window. She is especially prized in Freeze teams (where Omen duration can be extended indefinitely via frozen enemies) and Vaporize teams (where her Hexerei buffs provide up to 45% Vaporize DMG amplification).
Team Composition 1: Freeze Support (Classic Best Role)
- Cryo Main DPS (Ganyu, Kamisato Ayaka, or Wriothesley)
- Mona (Hydro application + Omen DMG buff)
- Cryo Battery (Diona or Shenhe)
- Kazuha or Venti (Anemo VV Shred + grouping)
Frozen enemies preserve Mona’s Illusory Bubble, preventing the Omen timer from counting down. This allows near-permanent Omen uptime in Freeze teams — a unique strength no other Hydro support can replicate.
Team Composition 2: Hexerei Vaporize Enabler (Post-Buff Best)
- Pyro Main DPS (Mualani, Arlecchino, or Mavuika)
- Mona (Hexerei Vaporize enabler + Omen buff)
- Second Hexerei character (Durin, Sucrose, or Fischl)
- Bennett or Kazuha (ATK Buffer / Anemo VV)
With Hexerei active, Mona can boost Vaporize reactions by up to 45% via Astral Glow stacks, while also extending Omen duration through Normal Attacks. A second Hexerei member is required to activate this.
Team Composition 3: Vaporize Nuke (Classic)
- Pyro DPS (Hu Tao, Diluc, or Klee)
- Mona (Omen buff + Hydro application)
- Bennett (ATK Buffer / Healer)
- Kazuha or Sucrose (Anemo VV Shred)
The classic Mona nuke setup — use Mona’s Burst to apply Omen, then immediately switch to your Pyro DPS to Vaporize the bubble pop and deal damage inside the Omen window. Mona’s Omen at Talent Lv. 10 provides up to 60% DMG Bonus.
Team Composition 4: Quickswap Flex Support
- Any main DPS (Neuvillette, Raiden Shogun, etc.)
- Mona (TTDS holder + Omen buff)
- Two supports tailored to the main DPS
Mona’s flexibility as a TTDS holder and Omen buffer means she can slot into almost any team that benefits from a short but massive DMG window. Especially effective for burst-oriented DPS characters.
Synergy Tips
• Mona’s Omen has a short base duration — use it right before your main DPS takes the field so they deal damage inside the window immediately
• In Freeze teams, keep enemies frozen to preserve the Illusory Bubble and maintain near-permanent Omen uptime
• With Hexerei active, use Normal Attacks after casting Burst to extend Omen by up to 8 additional seconds
• Mona’s Alternate Sprint applies Hydro on exit — use it for rapid Hydro application without using her Skill
• Mona’s Phantom taunts enemies off-field, providing free aggro management while she is swapped out
Pro Tip: Consider pairing Mona with Xingqiu for double Hydro application enabling consistent Vaporize reactions — a highly synergistic pairing in reaction-focused teams!
Talents & Constellations
Talent Priority
- Elemental Burst (Stellaris Phantasm) — Highest priority by far. Mona’s entire kit centers on this — the Omen debuff, DMG Bonus, Hydro application, and Hexerei Vaporize amplification all originate from her Burst. Level this first
- Elemental Skill (Mirror Reflection of Doom) — Second priority; useful for energy generation and off-field Hydro application via her Phantom taunt
- Normal Attack — Level last for support builds. Level this for on-field/Hexerei builds since Normal Attacks extend Omen duration and build Astral Glow stacks
Constellation Overview
C0 (Base) — Mona is fully viable and widely used at C0. As a Standard Banner character, constellations are not something to actively pull for — treat any obtained as a welcome bonus.
C1 (Prophecy of Submersion) — When any party member hits an Omen-affected enemy, all Hydro-related reaction DMG is increased by 15% for 8 seconds (Vaporize, Electro-Charged, Hydro Swirl, Frozen duration). Post-Hexerei buff: also increases Hydro reaction DMG Bonus by 160% of its original effect, making it significantly more powerful for reaction teams. Excellent constellation — one of the best on Standard Banner.
C2 (Lunar Chain) — On Normal Attack hit, 20% chance to auto-trigger a free Charged Attack (no Stamina cost, 5s cooldown). Weakest constellation for standard support builds since Mona rarely uses Normal Attacks. Post-Hexerei buff: hitting enemies with Charged Attacks now increases party Elemental Mastery by 80 for 12s — transforms this from a personal damage tool into a team support constellation.
C4 (Prophecy of Oblivion) — Best Stopping Point — When any party member attacks an Omen-affected enemy, their CRIT Rate is increased by 15%. A massive team-wide buff that allows DPS characters to invest more into CRIT DMG. In Freeze teams, this provides near-permanent 15% CRIT Rate for the whole team. Post-Hexerei buff: Hexerei characters hitting Omen-debuffed enemies also deal 15% extra CRIT DMG. C4 is the recommended stopping point for Mona.
C6 (Rhetorics of Calamitas) — Upon entering Illusory Torrent (sprint), Mona gains up to 180% increased Charged Attack DMG based on sprint duration. Post-Hexerei: Charged Attack damage against Omen-debuffed enemies increased by 200%. Primarily relevant for on-field DPS Mona builds. Too niche for most players to pursue.
Note: Mona has some of the best constellations among Standard Banner characters, especially C1 and C4. However, it is not recommended to pull specifically for them — Chronicled Wish banners are the best opportunity if targeting her.
Gameplay Tips
- Complete Witch’s Homework: Of Untested Insight immediately after obtaining Mona to unlock her Hexerei buffs
- Always cast Mona’s Burst just before your main DPS takes the field — the Omen window is short, and your DPS needs to act immediately inside it
- In Freeze teams, keep enemies frozen to preserve Illusory Bubble — this prevents Omen’s timer from counting down, enabling near-permanent Omen uptime
- With Hexerei active, use Normal Attacks after casting Burst to extend Omen duration by up to 8 additional seconds
- Mona’s Alternate Sprint applies Hydro when she reappears — use this for quick Hydro application without spending her Skill cooldown
- If using TTDS, swap to your main DPS immediately after switching from Mona to capture the 48% ATK transfer before it expires (10s duration)
- Mona’s A4 Passive converts 20% of ER into Hydro DMG Bonus — stacking ER to 200%+ gives a free ~40% Hydro DMG Bonus without needing a Hydro Goblet
- Her Phantom (from Skill) taunts enemies off-field, providing passive aggro management during rotations
