What Is This Is Not A Painting in NTE?

This Is Not A Painting is a Common Anomaly Commission in Neverness to Everness. It is found in the Miguel District and is also listed as “What You See” in the Anomaly Commission menu. Unlike most commissions, this one involves no combat at all. It is a pure puzzle commission from start to finish.

The concept is simple but clever. You enter an Anomalous Realm filled with paintings, and your job is to align those paintings with the real environment around you by adjusting your camera angle. When you get the alignment right, something in the world shifts — a door appears, a path opens up — and you move forward to the next level.

There are three puzzle levels in total, each one adding a small twist to keep things interesting. The commission is short and can be completed in just a few minutes once you know what to do.

Where to Find This Is Not A Painting

The commission starts southwest of Caltrop Lake in the Miguel District. Head to the marked hill in that area and look for a puppet standing near a group of paintings set up on easels. Approaching the puppet and interacting with it triggers the entry into the Anomalous Realm.

The starting point is on open ground. You do not need to enter any building or unlock any doors to begin. If you are having trouble reaching this part of the district, our guide on how to unlock all map areas in NTE can help you clear the fog and reach it faster.

This Is Not A Painting Walkthrough

There are three stages to this commission. Here is exactly what to do in each one.

Puzzle Level 1 – Align the Double Doors

When you arrive on the marked hill, approach the puppet near the paintings. You will notice an empty square frame that looks like it has space for a double door.

Your task here is to align the double doors painted on the canvas so they sit perfectly inside the empty frame. Move your character around the area and adjust your camera angle until the painted doors line up with the frame. You need to experiment with your position and perspective — the alignment only works from a specific spot.

Once the doors are correctly aligned, the painting will tremble and flicker. A moment later, a real door will appear in the frame. Walk through it to enter the next level.

Connect the Painted Door to the Real Door

Puzzle Level 2 – Connect the Painted Door to the Real Door

After entering through the door, you find yourself in a new space. There is a painting on an easel showing a single door and a window overlooking the moon. Behind the easel, there is a broken real door on the wall.

Stand behind the chair near the painting and adjust your position so the painted door aligns with the broken door frame behind it. You are essentially trying to merge the two — the painted door and the real door — into one complete double door from your viewing angle.

When the alignment is correct, the painting will flicker and the door will unlock. Go through it to reach the third level.

As you move forward into this stage, there is also a step where you need to align the painting with a sculpture’s background. Look at the picture placed to the right of the painting — it gives you a reference for how the alignment should look. Match the painting to the sculpture’s background using that reference.

Use the Light and the Miniature Door

Puzzle Level 3 – Use the Light and the Miniature Door

The third level is the trickiest of the three. Esper Zero will even comment that this one looks like it needs more work than the others.

Start by approaching the desk with a small miniature door on it. Your character will note that the area is too dark to work with. Turn around and walk toward the large black statue. Next to it, you will find an easel with a shining light that appears to float with nothing supporting it.

Adjust your camera angle to make the floating light appear to connect with the tripod stand behind it. Manipulate your perspective until the light looks like it is sitting on the stand. Once that is done, a new painting will become visible beyond the light source.

Now return to the miniature door on the desk. Align the miniature door with the left side of the new painting. As with the earlier puzzles, move and rotate your view until the alignment snaps into place. A full double door will appear.

Walk through the door that appears to complete the commission and exit the Anomalous Realm.

Tips for Solving the Puzzles Faster

These puzzles are not immediately obvious, but a few simple habits will get you through them without frustration.

Move Slowly and Adjust Your Camera Often

The alignment in each puzzle is angle-dependent. Small shifts in your character’s position can change what the camera picks up. Walk slowly around the area and pan the camera in different directions rather than standing still and just rotating. The sweet spot usually becomes obvious once you are within range of it.

Use the Reference Pictures When Available

In Level 2, there is a picture placed next to the painting that shows you what the correct alignment should look like. Always check for visual hints like this. The game does give you clues — you just need to look around the environment for them.

Watch for the Flicker

When your alignment is close but not quite right, the painting may partially flicker or tremble slightly. Use this as a signal that you are in the right general area. Fine-tune your position from there until the full effect triggers and the door appears.

This Commission Has No Time Limit

Take your time. There is no countdown timer on any of the three puzzles. If you are stuck, step back, look at the full environment, and try approaching from a different angle. You will not be penalized for taking a few extra minutes to figure it out.

Is This Is Not A Painting Worth Doing?

Yes, absolutely. It is one of the quickest and most unique commissions in the game. The puzzle design is creative and genuinely different from the combat-heavy commissions you will find elsewhere in Hethereau. It takes only a few minutes once you know the solutions, and the rewards are solid for the time it takes.

It is also a great commission to do early on, since the puzzles scale to your current level and require no specific character builds or team setups. Any lineup works here.
