Deep Blue Sorrow Commission Guide in NTE (Neverness to Everness)

Complete Deep Blue Sorrow Anomaly Commission guide for NTE Neverness to Everness. Learn how to trigger the Sea Prisoner boss by driving into Nautili Tunnel, beat it, and earn the S-Rank Arc Song of the Whale.

TL;DR

  • Deep Blue Sorrow is an Anomaly Commission in the New Herland District of NTE.
  • To trigger the boss, you must drive a 4-wheeled car (not a motorcycle) in reverse into Nautili Tunnel. Driving forward does nothing.
  • Once the Anomaly Zone notification appears, keep driving through the tunnel without stopping to enter the Anomalous Realm.
  • A cutscene plays followed by a boss fight against the Sea Prisoner — a massive whale-like entity.
  • Sea Prisoner is weak to Anima. Bring Anima-focused characters for the fastest clear.
  • At 70% HP, the boss enters a more aggressive phase with geysers and whirlpools. Stay alert.
  • Parry the dash attack when the boss flies high and dives — successful parry creates a major damage window.
  • After winning, contain the anomaly to receive the S-Rank Arc “Song of the Whale”.
  • Full rewards: Song of the Whale Arc, Hunter Level EXP ×300, Annulith ×40, Fons ×15,000, Silver Carrota ×80, U-00NE ×30, Beetle Coin ×7,500, Anomaly Material Selection Box I ×5.

What Is the Deep Blue Sorrow Commission in NTE?

Deep Blue Sorrow is one of the most cinematic and uniquely triggered Anomaly Commissions in Neverness to Everness (NTE). It tasks you with hunting down a boss called the Sea Prisoner — a colossal whale-like entity lurking beneath the streets of Hethereau, accessible only through a specific and easy-to-miss trigger involving the Nautili Tunnel.

What sets this commission apart from most others is how you start it. There is no item to pick up, no NPC to talk to, and no note on the floor. You need to get in a car, drive it in reverse into a tunnel, and follow what comes next. It is the kind of hidden encounter that rewards exploration and experimentation — and the prize at the end, the S-Rank Arc “Song of the Whale”, is one of the best free Arcs in the game.

This sits in the same tier of high-value commissions as the Rhythm Master commission, which gives the Blow Up the Crowd S-Rank Arc, and the Ride Assault commission. Both reward 300 Hunter EXP and a powerful S-Rank weapon for one-time completion. For a full overview of all commissions across Hethereau, see our Anomaly Zones guide for NTE.

How to Unlock Deep Blue Sorrow

Like all Anomaly Commissions, Deep Blue Sorrow unlocks after completing the main story mission Prologue Part 2. Open your World Map, access the Anomaly Commission menu in the bottom right corner, find Deep Blue Sorrow in the list, and hit Track Anomaly to mark the general area on your map.

You also need to own or have access to a 4-wheeled car before you can trigger the commission. Motorcycles and scooters do not work. If you have not yet purchased a vehicle, our guide on how to get a car in NTE will walk you through it. You can also check our vehicle modification guide if you want to tune your car before heading out.

Deep Blue Sorrow Location – Where Is Nautili Tunnel?

The Nautili Tunnel is located in the Bridge Crossing district. The tunnel itself runs in the direction of the New Herland District and is the key trigger point for this commission. The Sea Prisoner boss, once unlocked, permanently takes up residence east of Cape Square in the New Herland District and can be challenged any time after your first clear.

If you need help navigating the map or finding your way around districts, check our guide on how to unlock all map areas in NTE. Fast travel using nearby teleport points to get to Bridge Crossings quickly.

How to Trigger the Sea Prisoner – Step by Step

This is the part most players miss. The trigger for Deep Blue Sorrow is not obvious, and driving through the tunnel forward does absolutely nothing. Here is exactly what to do:

Step 1 – Get a 4-Wheeled Car

You must be driving a 4-wheeled vehicle (car). A motorcycle or scooter will not trigger the Anomaly Zone notification, and the Anomalous Realm gate will not appear. Make sure you have a car before heading to the tunnel. Check our guide on how to get a car in NTE if you need one.

Step 2 – Go to Nautili Tunnel in Bridge Crossings

Drive to the Nautili Tunnel in the Bridge Crossings district. The tunnel has entrances from both sides. For the smoothest approach, enter from the west side and drive eastward toward New Herland District — but the direction you approach the entrance from is less important than what you do at the entrance itself.

Step 3 – Reverse Your Car Into the Tunnel

This is the critical step. At the tunnel entrance, put your car in reverse and drive backwards into the tunnel. Do not drive forward. Driving in normally does nothing and the event will not trigger. You must enter the tunnel in reverse. When you have done it correctly, the Anomaly Zone notification will appear on your screen shortly after entering.

Step 4 – Keep Driving Without Stopping

As soon as the Anomaly Zone notification appears, a gate to an Anomalous Realm opens in the direction of New Herland District. Do not stop driving. Keep going through the tunnel, following the water road that appears, until you reach the end. Stopping the car or turning around will interrupt the sequence.

Step 5 – Follow the Chase Sequence

Once inside the Anomalous Realm, a massive whale-like entity — the Sea Prisoner — appears and leads you through a dynamic chase sequence. Follow it. Maintain speed and direction as the game guides you toward the next phase. Keep driving until you reach the icy region where the chase ends and a cutscene begins.

Step 6 – Enter the Boss Arena

The cutscene transitions directly into the boss fight arena. After it finishes playing, the battle with the Sea Prisoner begins. Prepare for a full boss encounter.

How to Beat Sea Prisoner

Sea Prisoner Weakness

The Sea Prisoner is weak to Anima damage. All other elements have a higher resistance against it. If you bring Anima-focused characters, you will deal noticeably more damage and clear the fight faster. This is a significant advantage, so make sure at least your main DPS is an Anima character before going in.

Phase 1 – Standard Combat (100% to 70% HP)

The Sea Prisoner opens the fight by diving underwater and breaching the surface for attacks, or flying around the arena and lunging at you. Despite its size, most of its attacks in this phase are slow and very readable. Watch for a red glint before each hit — that is your cue to dodge. The Sea Prisoner telegraphs nearly everything it does, so patience and clean dodges are your best tools here.

Focus on dealing damage during the windows when the boss surfaces or pauses between attacks. Do not chase it when it is airborne or underwater — wait for it to come back into range and punish then.

Phase 2 – Increased Aggression (Below 70% HP)

Once you shave off 30% of the Sea Prisoner’s HP, it enters a second phase and the entire arena begins to rain. Its attacks become more erratic and it starts using geysers and whirlpools across the arena floor. These appear with predictive circles on the ground before they activate. Watch the floor and dodge out of those circles as soon as you see them appear. Do not stand still in Phase 2 — keep moving at all times.

The Dash Attack – Parry This

One of the Sea Prisoner’s most dangerous moves is its dash attack. The boss flies high into the air, then rapidly dives straight at you to ram you with its horn. This attack is powerful and will deal serious damage if it connects. However, it is also your biggest opportunity.

Parry the dash attack. The timing requires patience and precision — watch the descent carefully and input your Reversal skill at the right moment. A successful parry renders the Sea Prisoner vulnerable for a considerable amount of time, opening a massive damage window. Land everything you have during this window. Parrying this attack consistently is the key to clearing the fight efficiently.

Best Teams for Deep Blue Sorrow

Nanally Hypercarry Team

Nanally is the recommended main DPS for this fight because of her Anima element, which directly exploits the Sea Prisoner’s weakness. Pair her with a Cosmos unit to enable the Blossom Esper Cycle. Then pair a Cosmos unit with a Lakshana unit right after triggering Blossom to activate the Charge reaction, which restores Ultimate energy to the entire party. A sample lineup: Nanally, Skia, Mint, and Chiz.

For more on building Nanally for maximum output, see the Nanally build guide.

Alternate Charge Team With Hathor

If you do not have Nanally, Hathor works as a strong alternative main DPS. Use the same Cosmos-Lakshana Charge strategy with a lineup of Hathor, Jiuyuan, Mint, and Edgar. Start with Jiuyuan or Mint, have Edgar follow up with his Skill or Ultimate for healing, then switch to Hathor to deliver the damage. The Hathor build guide and Jiuyuan build guide have full details on optimizing these characters.

Contain the Anomaly After Winning

After the Sea Prisoner falls, do not walk away. An interaction prompt appears to contain the anomaly. This step is required to receive the Song of the Whale Arc reward. Skipping it means the Arc does not land in your inventory. Always follow through on containment before leaving the arena — this applies to both the first-time clear and any repeat runs.

Deep Blue Sorrow Rewards

Completing the Deep Blue Sorrow Anomaly Commission gives you the following one-time rewards:

  • S-Rank Arc “Song of the Whale”
  • Hunter Level EXP ×300
  • Annulith ×40
  • Fons ×15,000
  • Silver Carrota ×80
  • U-00NE ×30
  • Beetle Coin ×7,500
  • Anomaly Material Selection Box I ×5

These match the rewards from other top-tier S-Rank Arc commissions like Rhythm Master and Ride Assault, making Deep Blue Sorrow one of the most valuable one-time commissions in the entire game.

About the Song of the Whale Arc

Song of the Whale is an S-Rank Plasma Arc and is considered one of the best free weapons for break-focused builds in NTE. Here is what makes it stand out:

  • Its Arc effect, Deep Blue Sorrow, rewards aggressive play — every time you finish off a Broken enemy, you recover 30% HP. This triggers on a 30-second cooldown.
  • In longer fights against bosses or elite groups where enemies can be broken repeatedly, this can trigger multiple times and keep your team in the fight without pulling back to heal.
  • It performs best when paired with Break-focused builds — if your team excels at breaking enemy defenses quickly, Song of the Whale turns those breaks into both extra damage and sustained survivability.
  • It is currently considered the best free Arc for Aurelia, enhancing her break capabilities significantly. See the Aurelia build guide for how to use it to its full potential.
  • It is less impactful in short fights where enemies do not survive long enough for Break mechanics to fully activate, but it shines in extended encounters.

Sea Prisoner as a Repeatable Boss

After completing Deep Blue Sorrow and earning the one-time Arc reward, the Sea Prisoner becomes a permanent repeatable Anomaly Hunt boss found east of Cape Square in the New Herland District. You can return and fight it again at any time for additional resources and currency.

Repeat runs drop development materials useful for character progression. Once unlocked, you do not need to trigger the reverse car sequence again — the boss is accessible directly in its permanent New Herland District spawn point.

Tips for Completing Deep Blue Sorrow

The Reverse Trigger Is the Hardest Part

Most players who get stuck on this commission are not failing the boss fight — they are failing to trigger it at all. If the Anomaly Zone notification does not appear after entering the tunnel, double-check that you reversed into it rather than drove in forward. The direction matters completely. Once you confirm you are entering in reverse and the notification fires, everything else flows naturally from there.

Do Not Stop Driving in the Anomalous Realm

The water road through the Anomalous Realm requires you to keep moving. Stopping your car in the middle of the chase sequence can interrupt the event and prevent the boss arena from loading. Keep your foot on the accelerator the whole way through until the cutscene kicks in.

Save Your Cooldowns for the Phase 2 Windows

The Sea Prisoner becomes much more dangerous below 70% HP. If possible, conserve your big Ultimate skills and cooldowns until Phase 2 so you can burst the boss down faster during the more chaotic geyser phase. Trying to conserve damage too long in Phase 1 just extends the fight unnecessarily.

Practice the Parry Timing

The dash attack parry window is the most important skill to learn for this fight. The Sea Prisoner telegraphs it visually — watch for it to rise high into the air before diving. Time your Reversal skill input as it descends. If you miss the first attempt, watch the animation more carefully next time and adjust your timing. The vulnerability window after a successful parry is long enough to fit in significant burst damage, so getting this right consistently will cut your clear time dramatically.

Use Time of Day If Needed

Some sources suggest the encounter works best or may specifically trigger at night. If you are having trouble triggering the event, try using the in-game time system to set it to night before heading to Nautili Tunnel. Our guide on how to pass time and control weather in NTE covers exactly how to change the time of day.

Final Thoughts

Deep Blue Sorrow is one of the most satisfying commissions in NTE precisely because nothing about it is handed to you. The reverse-entry trigger is not explained anywhere in-game. The chase sequence is unexpected. The parry timing on the dash attack requires practice. And the icy boss arena feels genuinely epic for a side commission.

Once you know the reverse car trick and understand the fight’s two phases, the Sea Prisoner is very manageable with a prepared Anima team. The Song of the Whale Arc that waits at the end is worth every bit of effort — especially for Aurelia users and anyone running a Break-focused lineup.

Make sure you own a car, reverse into Nautili Tunnel, follow the whale, parry the dive, and contain after the kill. Do all of that and you walk away with one of the best free weapons in the game.
