Crimson Desert: Fire Breathing Pack Walkthrough

Complete walkthrough for the Fire Breathing Pack quest in Crimson Desert. Learn how to get both Kuku Pack blueprints, where to find the Peddler's Pack, what materials you need, and how to craft the Kuku Rocket Pack at Kilnden Workshop.

TL;DR

  • Fire Breathing Pack is a faction quest in Pailune, available from Chapter 8 under The Giant’s Leap questline.
  • Your actual goal is to craft the Kuku Rocket Pack — the game never makes this obvious upfront.
  • You need two blueprints: Blueprint I from the Sanctum of Penitence, and Blueprint II from Grimnir’s Assistant in Pailune.
  • The Peddler’s Pack is a required crafting material — buy it at Totesmith Tannery for 85 Copper or steal one from a roaming merchant.
  • Only Oongka can use the Kuku Rocket Pack. Kliff and Damiane cannot fly with it.
  • All crafting happens at Grimnir’s Kuku Shop inside the Kilnden Workshop, west of Hernand.

The Fire Breathing Pack quest in Crimson Desert sounds simple enough — find a quest, craft an item, done. In reality it’s one of the more confusing faction quests in the game because it never directly tells you what you actually need to build. The item you end up crafting is called the Kuku Rocket Pack, which is essentially a jetpack for Oongka. Getting it requires two separate blueprints, a specific crafting material that you have to either buy or steal, and a visit to Grimnir at the Kilnden Workshop. This guide walks through every step from start to finish so nothing catches you off guard.

How to Unlock the Fire Breathing Pack Quest

This quest is part of The Giant’s Leap questline under the Pailune Militia faction. It becomes available in Chapter 8, after you fully unlock Pailune as a hub city by liberating the region in Chapter 7. Completing that liberation arc also rewards you with Oongka as a playable character — which matters a lot here, since he’s the only character who can actually use the jetpack once it’s built.

Once Pailune is live, head to the south side of the city. You’re looking for Grimnir’s Assistant — described in the quest as a man out on the streets searching for a Greymane. A quest marker will appear when you get close. Speak to him and he’ll hand you a document called the “Letter from Grimnir.”

Do not just receive the letter and move on. Open your inventory, select the letter, and choose Examine. On controller, hold LB or L1 to read it. This is the step that actually registers Blueprint II: Kuku Rocket Pack in your Knowledge tab. If you skip examining the letter, the crafting recipe will not appear and you will be stuck wondering why you can’t craft anything at Grimnir’s shop.

How to Get Blueprint I — Kuku Pack

Before you can craft the Rocket Pack, you need the base version — the Kuku Pack. Its blueprint comes from completing the Sanctum of Penitence, which is part of the Witch of Wisdom faction quest. The Sanctum is located southeast of Hernand.

Inside, the key puzzle involves a floating block near the entrance. Use your Axiom Force ability to grab and move the block, carry it back to the broken kiln, and rotate it into the correct orientation before placing it on the bottom-left tower. Jump onto the block and use Force Palm to lock it into position. A short cutscene plays and you automatically receive Blueprint I: Kuku Pack.

If you’ve already worked through the Witch of Wisdom questline before starting the Fire Breathing Pack quest, you likely have this blueprint already. Check your Knowledge tab to confirm before heading anywhere else.

How to Get the Kuku Pot

The Kuku Pot is a key crafting component you earn during Chapter 4’s “Mysterious Pot” quest chain at the Kilnden Workshop. Grimnir gives it to you after you repair the facility by completing the “Kiln Repair at the Kilnden Workshop” quest, which involves activating an ancient generator and fixing three broken kilns.

The Kilnden Workshop is located west of Hernand on the map. If you’ve been progressing through faction quests normally, you’ve almost certainly already visited this location and have the Kuku Pot in your possession. See our full Kiln Repair at the Kilnden Workshop quest guide if you need help with that step.

How to Get the Peddler’s Pack

The Peddler’s Pack is the crafting base for the Kuku Pack, and it’s the step that trips up most players because the game doesn’t point you directly to a vendor. You have two options: buy one or steal one.

Buy It at Totesmith Tannery (Easiest Method)

The most reliable and lowest-risk method is buying one at Totesmith Tannery, located southwest of the Hernand Highlands. Head directly south from the Greymanes Howling Hill camp or use a nearby Abyss Nexus to get close, then go southwest until you reach the tannery.

At the tannery, look along the road heading south and you’ll spot a street vendor. A Peddler’s Pack is propped up directly behind them — approach it and hold X on Xbox or Square on PlayStation to purchase it for 85 Copper. Note that you cannot buy it through the merchant’s inventory menu — only the physical pack sitting on display is purchasable this way.

There are actually several Peddler’s Packs around the tannery area — two behind the merchant, two on nearby tables, and two more hanging along the fence — but only the one directly behind the vendor is available to buy cleanly. The rest must be stolen.

Steal It from a Roaming Merchant

If you prefer to grab one without spending Copper, equip a Mask first to hide your identity. Approach any roaming merchant carrying a pack on their back and draw your weapon or press the lantern button near them. The merchant will get frightened and drop their pack on the ground.

Once the pack drops, pick it up quickly. This triggers a Theft Bounty and creates a red danger area around you — run out of that circle as fast as possible, then remove your mask to lower suspicion. Acting fast is the key. The longer you stay in the red circle, the higher the chance of getting caught. Kuku Pack and Kuku Rocket Pack — Crafting Materials

With both blueprints in hand and the Peddler’s Pack acquired, head to the Kilnden Workshop west of Hernand. Use the Abyss Nexus west of the workshop to fast travel close, then find Grimnir at the Mysterious Iron Pot (also called Grimnir’s Kuku Shop).

Here’s exactly what you need to craft both items:

Kuku Pack (Crafted First)

  • 1x Peddler’s Pack — bought or stolen as described above
  • 1x Kuku Pot — earned from the Kilnden Workshop kiln repair quest

Kuku Rocket Pack (Fire Breathing Pack)

  • 1x Kuku Pack — crafted in the step above
  • 10x Iron Ore — mined from nodes across Pywel or bought from equipment shops and street vendors
  • 10x Copper Ore — same as Iron Ore, common at mining nodes and merchants
  • 5x Cogwheel — dropped by mechanical/Abyss enemies or found in regional treasure chests
  • 3x Small Battery — dropped by pirates in Demeniss or from breaking environmental objects on island regions

For help gathering ores, check our guides on how to get Iron Ore and how to get Copper Ore. For Small Batteries, we also have a dedicated guide on how to get Small Batteries.

How to Farm Cogwheels and Small Batteries

Iron Ore and Copper Ore are easy — you’ll likely already have plenty from normal play. Cogwheels and Small Batteries take a bit more focused effort.

Cogwheels drop from mechanical-type enemies and can also be found in Abyss zones and regional treasure chests. Focus on clearing mechanical enemy clusters in patrol zones. These enemies respawn, so running the same route a few times is usually enough to hit your quota of five.

Small Batteries are obtained by defeating Pirates in Demeniss or by breaking environmental objects in island regions marked on your map. Use area-of-effect attacks to clear enemy groups faster and improve how many drops you collect per run. Track your inventory as you farm so you stop as soon as you’ve hit the required amounts.

How to Craft the Fire Breathing Pack — Step by Step

  • Step 1: Complete Chapter 7 and unlock Pailune city in Chapter 8.
  • Step 2: Find Grimnir’s Assistant on the south side of Pailune. Speak to him and receive the Letter from Grimnir.
  • Step 3: Open your inventory and Examine the letter (hold LB/L1 on controller). This unlocks Blueprint II: Kuku Rocket Pack.
  • Step 4: Complete the Sanctum of Penitence (part of Witch of Wisdom faction quest) to get Blueprint I: Kuku Pack — skip if you already have it.
  • Step 5: Get a Peddler’s Pack from Totesmith Tannery (buy for 85 Copper) or steal one from a roaming merchant while wearing a Mask.
  • Step 6: Head to the Kilnden Workshop west of Hernand. Interact with the Mysterious Iron Pot and speak to Grimnir.
  • Step 7: Craft the Kuku Pack first using the Peddler’s Pack and Kuku Pot.
  • Step 8: Gather 10x Iron Ore, 10x Copper Ore, 5x Cogwheels, and 3x Small Batteries.
  • Step 9: Return to Grimnir and craft the Kuku Rocket Pack using Blueprint II.
  • Step 10: The quest completes upon crafting. Switch to Oongka to use the pack.

How to Use the Kuku Rocket Pack

Once crafted, the Kuku Rocket Pack works exclusively with Oongka. Kliff and Damiane cannot use it. Switch to Oongka, then press X on Xbox or Square on PlayStation while in midair to activate the jetpack and fly. Flight drains your stamina, so keep an eye on the stamina bar while airborne. For tips on maximising stamina, see our guide on how to get max Stamina in Crimson Desert.

The pack is especially useful for reaching floating islands, scaling vertical terrain, and accessing areas that are otherwise unreachable with standard movement. Common Issues and Fixes

Blueprint II Not Appearing After Receiving the Letter

This is the most reported issue with this quest. If you got the letter but don’t see Blueprint II in your Knowledge tab, you haven’t examined the letter yet. Open your inventory, select it, and hold the examine button. The blueprint only registers after this action — simply having the letter in your bag is not enough.

Can’t Find Grimnir’s Assistant

Make sure you’ve fully unlocked Pailune and progressed into Chapter 8. The assistant only appears on the south side of the city once the faction quest is active. Check for a quest marker under The Giant’s Leap questline in your journal.

Kuku Rocket Pack Not Working on Kliff or Damiane

This is by design. The Kuku Rocket Pack is exclusive to Oongka. Switch characters through the character swap menu and equip it on Oongka specifically.
