Critical Shot is one of those mechanics in Pragmata that looks simple on the surface but has a lot of depth behind it. It is not just a flashy finisher. It is a core part of your combat loop, a reliable source of extra Lunafilament, and one of the safest moments in a fight thanks to the invincibility it gives you during the animation.
If you have been skipping it or do not fully understand how to trigger it consistently, this guide breaks down everything you need to know.
How to Unlock Critical Shot
Critical Shot is unlocked automatically during the SectorGuard boss fight at the end of the Solar Power Plant — Sector 1 of Pragmata. You do not need to do anything special to unlock it. The game introduces it as part of the first boss encounter and teaches you how to use it there. Once unlocked, it is available for every fight going forward.
You can upgrade the Critical Shot ability at the Unit Printer using Lunafilament. Upgrading it increases the damage it deals and improves how often the purple node appears. It is worth investing in early. For the full upgrade priority breakdown, see our Pragmata best firmware upgrades guide.

How Critical Shot Works on Regular Enemies
The process for landing a Critical Shot on a standard enemy has four steps. Learn this loop and it becomes second nature.
Step 1 – Damage the Enemy to Low Health
First, deal damage to the enemy until its health is critically low. You need to hack it and shoot it down to near-death before anything else happens. The Critical Shot option does not appear at full health. Keep hacking and shooting until the enemy is almost finished.
Step 2 – The Purple Critical Shot Node Appears
Once the enemy is at low health, a purple Critical Shot node appears inside Diana’s Hacking Matrix. This is the signal that a Critical Shot is available. The purple node shows up automatically — you do not have to do anything extra to make it appear. You just need to have the enemy near death first.
Step 3 – Navigate Through the Purple Node
Start a hack with Diana and route your path through the purple Critical Shot node on your way to the green EXE node. Passing through the purple node during the hack is what triggers the knockdown. The enemy collapses to the ground after the hack completes. If you skip the purple node and go straight to the green node, you will not get the Critical Shot — you will just finish the hack normally. Make sure your path goes through the purple node.
Step 4 – Approach and Press R2 / RT
Once the enemy is knocked down, move toward it and press R2 on PlayStation or RT on Xbox to deliver the Critical Shot. The prompt will appear on screen. Do it quickly — the window does not last forever. Hugh performs a powerful finishing move and the enemy is destroyed.
How Critical Shot Works on Bosses
The boss version of Critical Shot works differently from regular enemies. Bosses do not have a simple low-health trigger. Instead, they use a stun meter.
Build the Stun Meter
Every time you successfully hack a boss and deal damage to it in the Open state, you fill a meter that sits below the boss’s health bar. Keep hacking and shooting. Every hit and every hack adds to this meter. The more consistently you use Diana’s hacking, the faster the meter builds up.
Watch for the Purple Meter
When the stun meter is completely full, it turns purple. That is your signal. The boss enters a stunned state for a short window. This is your Critical Shot opportunity. Do not wait — act immediately when you see the meter turn purple.
Deliver the Critical Shot
While the boss is stunned, approach and press R2 / RT to land the Critical Shot. Against bosses, this deals massive damage. Against the LunaDigger for example, a well-timed Critical Shot with the Charge Piercer can deal up to 6000 damage in a single hit. The stun window is short, so close the distance fast and press the button the moment you are in range.
After the Critical Shot lands, the boss recovers and the cycle resets. Go back to hacking and building the stun meter again. For boss-specific stun meter tips, check our Pragmata how to beat the LunaDigger Sector 4 boss guide and our Pragmata how to beat the Sentinel Central Port boss guide.
Why You Should Always Use Critical Shot
A lot of players skip Critical Shots on weaker enemies and just shoot them down normally. That is a mistake. There are two big reasons to use it every single time.
Extra Lunafilament on Every Kill
Every enemy you finish with a Critical Shot drops extra Lunafilament. This is true even without the ability upgraded to Level 3 and without any Lunafilament-boosting mods equipped. Lunafilament is the main upgrade currency in Pragmata — it funds weapon upgrades, suit improvements, and hacking enhancements. Getting a consistent bonus drop on every enemy kill adds up fast across a full playthrough. If you are ever running low on Lunafilament, the fastest fix is to start finishing every enemy with a Critical Shot instead of letting them die to regular gunfire. For more ways to farm it, see our Pragmata Lunafilament farming guide.
Full Invincibility During the Animation
During the Critical Shot animation, Hugh is completely invincible. No damage can reach him. This makes Critical Shot not just a damage tool — it is also a survival tool. If you are surrounded by multiple enemies and taking heavy fire, landing a Critical Shot on one of them gives you a moment to breathe. The invincibility frames last the full length of the animation, which is long enough to reset your position and prepare for what comes next. In crowded fights, using Critical Shots tactically to buy breathing room is just as valuable as the damage it deals.
Critical Shot Mods and Upgrades
There are mods in Pragmata that directly enhance how Critical Shot performs. One confirmed mod is Collateral Damage, which causes 30% of a Critical Shot’s damage to spread to nearby enemies. This is excellent for grouped fights where clearing multiple enemies quickly matters. Equipping it means one Critical Shot can weaken nearby targets at the same time, setting them up for faster follow-up kills.
The Pocket Refinery mod increases all Lunafilament drops by 10%. Combined with Critical Shot’s bonus drop on every kill, this creates a very strong passive farming loop across every combat encounter in the game. For the full mod breakdown and which ones to prioritize, see our Pragmata best mods guide.
Upgrading the Critical Shot ability itself at the Unit Printer also matters. Higher upgrade levels increase the damage output of the shot and improve the frequency and reliability of the purple node appearing in the Hacking Matrix. Invest in it early. See our Pragmata unit printer guide for how the Unit Printer works.
Tips for Landing Critical Shot Consistently
Route Through the Purple Node First
When the purple node appears in the Hacking Matrix, plan your path before you start moving the cursor. The purple node sits in a specific spot on the grid each time. If you rush your routing and skip past it by accident, you lose the Critical Shot for that hack. Take half a second to look at the layout and confirm your path goes through the purple node on the way to the green EXE node.
Use Heat and Drain Hacks to Build the Meter Faster
Against bosses, Heat and Drain hacking nodes are the most effective at building the stun meter quickly. Use them on every hack cycle. The faster the meter fills, the sooner you get a Critical Shot window. See our Pragmata best firmware upgrades guide for how to level up Diana’s hacking to get more out of these nodes.
Use the Charge Piercer for Boss Critical Shots
When the boss stun meter turns purple and you have the Critical Shot window, switch to the Charge Piercer before you close the distance. It deals the highest burst damage of any weapon during that window. The Photon Laser is also excellent here for bosses that are already near death. Have your best burst weapon ready before the meter fills so you are not scrambling to swap in the moment it turns purple. See our Pragmata best weapons loadout guide for the full weapon breakdown.
Do Not Try to Critical Shot Every Boss Attack Window
On regular enemies, you should always aim for the Critical Shot. On bosses, the stun meter is the gate — you cannot force it. Do not spam attacks hoping to trigger it faster than the meter allows. Focus on clean hacking, consistent damage in the Open state, and letting the meter build naturally. Patience is faster than panic in boss fights.
Use Overdrive Protocol to Set Up Critical Shots
Diana’s Overdrive Protocol forces nearby enemies into the Open state, immobilizes them, and deals damage. This is excellent for setting up a Critical Shot on a tough enemy or elite bot quickly. If an enemy is near death and you need the purple node to appear, trigger the Overdrive to push it into a vulnerable window and follow immediately with the Critical Shot hack route.
Quick Tips Summary
- Damage enemies to low health first — the purple node only appears when the enemy is nearly dead.
- Always route Diana’s hack through the purple node on the way to the green EXE node.
- On bosses, build the stun meter by hacking and shooting in the Open state — act the moment it turns purple.
- Press R2 (PlayStation) or RT (Xbox) when the prompt appears to land the Critical Shot.
- Never skip Critical Shot on regular enemies — the extra Lunafilament drop is always worth it.
- Use the invincibility frames during the animation to reset position in crowded fights.
- Equip Collateral Damage mod to spread 30% Critical Shot damage to nearby enemies.
- Use Charge Piercer for maximum Critical Shot damage on bosses.
- Upgrade Critical Shot at the Unit Printer early — it increases damage and node frequency.
