What Is Mental Damage in NTE? Neverness to Everness Mental DMG Explained

Not sure what Mental Damage does in NTE? Here's a simple breakdown of how Mental DMG works, where it comes from, which characters use it, and how to scale it.

TL;DR

  • Mental Damage is a unique damage type that sits outside all six elements in NTE.
  • It triggers from the Nova Esper Cycle reaction (Chaos + Psyche) or from certain character skills.
  • Nova attaches to an enemy for 5 seconds — when it expires, the Mental DMG burst fires.
  • Fadia is currently the only character with innate Mental DMG built directly into her kit.
  • Mental DMG Bonus is the only damage stat that can appear as a main stat on Cartridges.
  • The Quiet Manor Cartridge set and the Eternal Waltz Arc are the main ways to scale it.

If you have seen “Mental DMG” pop up in a Cartridge description or a skill tooltip and had no idea what it meant, you are not alone. NTE does not explain it clearly in-game. This guide breaks it down in plain terms — what it is, how it works, who uses it, and how to build around it.

What Is Mental Damage in NTE?

Mental Damage (Mental DMG) is a separate damage category in Neverness to Everness. It does not belong to any of the six elemental types — Cosmos, Anima, Incantation, Chaos, Psyche, or Lakshana.

Think of it this way: elemental damage types are what your characters deal during normal attacks and abilities. Mental Damage is the result of a specific reaction or skill — it is the payoff, not the element itself.

No character has a “Mental” element type. And no enemy in the game has a Mental elemental resistance. This makes Mental DMG behave differently from everything else in the game.

How Does Mental Damage Work in NTE?

There are two ways to produce Mental Damage in NTE.

1. The Nova Esper Cycle Reaction

The main source of Mental DMG is the Nova reaction. Nova is an Esper Cycle reaction that forms when you combine a Chaos element character with a Psyche element character.

Here is how the sequence works:

  • Fill the Esper Cycle gauge by swapping between your Chaos and Psyche characters.
  • When the gauge is full, triggering an Entry Attack applies the Nova effect to the enemy.
  • Nova stays on the enemy for 5 seconds.
  • When those 5 seconds are up, the effect expires and deals a large burst of Mental Damage to all affected targets.

So if you run Daffodil (Chaos) paired with Haniel (Psyche) and fill their Cycle gauges, you will trigger Nova — and the Mental DMG burst fires when the Nova timer runs out.

2. Character Skills That Deal Mental DMG Directly

A small number of character skills explicitly say they deal Mental DMG. Right now, Fadia is the only playable character with innate Mental DMG in her kit — without needing the Nova reaction.

Her ultimate ability, Agony to Euphoria, deals 6 instances of Mental Damage on cast. After that, she can immediately recast her skill Wordless Rejection for up to 5 follow-up attacks — and all of those also deal Mental Damage, not Psyche damage.

This makes Fadia a strong pick for any team that wants to consistently output Mental DMG. You can find her full setup in our Fadia build guide for NTE.

How Is Mental Damage Different from Elemental Damage?

Here is the key difference:

  • Elemental damage checks against the enemy’s matching elemental resistance. Chaos damage is reduced by Chaos resistance, Psyche damage by Psyche resistance, and so on.
  • Mental Damage ignores all elemental resistance. There is no Mental resistance stat on any enemy, so Mental DMG hits consistently regardless of what enemy you are fighting.

This is why Nova-focused teams perform so well in boss content. Bosses often have high elemental resistances that reduce your damage — but Mental DMG bypasses all of that and lands at full value every time.

Mental DMG Bonus: The Cartridge Stat Explained

Mental DMG Bonus is the stat that directly increases how much Mental Damage you deal. It is also the only damage type in the game that can appear as a main stat on a Cartridge.

The six elemental damage bonuses — like Chaos DMG or Psyche DMG — can only roll as Cartridge substats. Mental DMG Bonus can roll as the main stat on the right Cartridge slot, which means you can invest much more heavily into it.

Here are the stat ranges depending on Cartridge rarity:

  • B-rarity: 4.5% – 22.5%
  • A-rarity: 6% – 30%
  • S-rarity: 7.5% – 37.5% (as substat or main stat)

Best Cartridge Set for Mental Damage: Quiet Manor

The Quiet Manor Cartridge set is the go-to option if you want to scale Mental DMG. It is an S-rarity set with no element restriction, so any character who deals Mental Damage can use it.

  • 2-Piece (Epic): Mental DMG +10%
  • 4-Piece (Legendary): +12% Mental DMG Bonus per Basic Attack, up to 3 stacks. Each stack lasts 6 seconds.

At maximum stacks, the 4-piece bonus adds 36% on top of the 2-piece bonus — giving you a combined 46% Mental DMG Bonus when fully stacked.

One thing to keep in mind: the stacks expire after 6 seconds. Characters who do not chain Basic Attacks quickly will lose the buff. Make sure the character you are building actually hits enough basic attacks to keep the stacks up.

You can farm Quiet Manor from the Rabbit Hole: Mental Map anomaly zone, which costs 40 Character Pixels per run.

Best Arc for Mental Damage: Eternal Waltz

The Eternal Waltz is the Synthesis Arc designed to scale Mental Damage. Here are its key stats:

  • Base ATK: 424 at max level
  • Substat: HP 41.25%
  • Passive: Increases Max HP by up to 32%. After the wearer casts an Ultimate, Mental DMG dealt increases by 10–18% for 10 seconds (scales with refinement level).

This is Fadia’s signature Arc. Her Ultimate is the trigger for the buff, and it is also what produces the Mental Damage hits — so the timing lines up perfectly. Cast her Ultimate, then let the Mental DMG instances land within that 10-second window.

How to Scale Mental Damage: Step-by-Step

If you want to build a team that consistently deals strong Mental Damage, follow these steps:

Step 1 – Build a Nova Team

Pair a Chaos character with a Psyche character. Good examples include Daffodil (Chaos) and Haniel (Psyche). Swap between them during combat to fill the Esper Cycle gauge, then trigger the Entry Attack for Nova.

If you are using Fadia, her Mental DMG does not require Nova — but pairing her in a Nova setup still increases your total Mental output.

See our best team compositions guide for NTE for full team setups.

Step 2 – Stack Mental DMG Bonus

Equip the Quiet Manor 4-piece set on the character who triggers Nova or who deals the most Mental DMG. Roll for Mental DMG Bonus in your main stat slot and in substats where possible.

Step 3 – Equip Eternal Waltz on Fadia

If you have Fadia, equip her with Eternal Waltz. Cast her Ultimate first before her Mental DMG hits land to activate the 10-second damage bonus window.

Step 4 – Raise Cycle Intensity

Esper Cycle reactions scale with Cycle Intensity. The Nova burst uses the higher Cycle Intensity between the two characters involved. Investing in this stat increases the damage of the Nova explosion.

For full character-specific builds, check out our guides for Daffodil, Haniel, and Fadia.

How to Tell If Mental Damage Is Landing

In NTE, damage numbers are color-coded by type. Mental DMG has its own distinct visual indicator — it looks different from the Chaos or Psyche colors. If you see the Nova effect on an enemy and then a separate burst of damage appear after 5 seconds with its own color, that is your Mental DMG firing.

If you only see Chaos or Psyche colors, the Nova reaction has not expired yet — wait for the burst.

Because Mental DMG ignores elemental resistance, the numbers you see will be consistent across different enemy types. That predictability is what makes Mental-focused builds great for boss fights where resistances vary a lot.

Quick Summary

  • Mental Damage is not tied to any element — it is the output of the Nova reaction or specific skills.
  • Nova (Chaos + Psyche) attaches to enemies for 5 seconds, then bursts for Mental DMG.
  • Fadia is the only character who currently deals Mental DMG directly without Nova.
  • No enemy has Mental resistance, so Mental DMG always hits at full value.
  • Mental DMG Bonus is the only damage stat that can roll as a Cartridge main stat.
  • Use Quiet Manor (Cartridge set) and Eternal Waltz (Arc) to maximize your output.
