What Is Coal in Palworld?

Coal is a raw mining resource found as dark black rock deposits across the map. The in-game description calls it “coal often found in caves and other places, required to create high quality metal.” It cannot be purchased from any merchant and cannot be crafted. Every unit you get comes from mining deposits, Pal drops, or your base Coal Mine.

Coal looks distinctly different from other ore types. It appears as dark, almost black boulders — much darker than standard Ore (bronze-brown) or Sulfur (yellow). Once you know what to look for, it is easy to spot in the field.

Best Coal Locations in Palworld 1.0

Coal is primarily found in desert, volcanic, and rocky regions. Here are the best locations organized from early to late game.

Early Game — North of Azurobe Boss / Rayne Syndicate Tower

The closest Coal deposits to the starting zone are found north of the Azurobe Alpha Boss spawn, going further north past the Rayne Syndicate Tower. The surrounding area has Pals around level 30–35, which you can often dodge without fighting. A small sand patch in this area has a solid cluster of Coal nodes to get you started.

A few hills just south of that position also have a handful of nodes, and nearby dungeons sometimes contain Coal deposits inside them as a bonus. Dungeons reset after 3–6 in-game days, so check back periodically. Treat dungeon Coal as a supplement rather than your main source.

Mid-Game — Twilight Dunes / Anubis Desert

The best mid-game Coal farming area is the Twilight Dunes, located north of the Anubis Alpha Boss spawn near the center of the map. This is where most players build their first dedicated Coal base. Two specific coordinate clusters are excellent:

• -155, -90 — 6 Coal nodes plus 1 Ore deposit. Located next to the Anubis Alpha Boss. Fast-travel to Investigator’s Fork and head north.
• -97, -120 — 6 Coal nodes in a rocky desert east of the previous spot. Also home to many wild Digtoise, making it a great place to catch mining Pals at the same time.

The Anubis area around -157, -92 and -93, -123 also has smaller pockets of Coal off rocky outcrops for quick top-ups between longer farming sessions. The Twilight Dunes area has level 40+ Pals, so come prepared with solid gear and a strong team. Mid-Game — Bamboo Grove Watchtower Area

Near the Bamboo Grove Watchtower, there is an open, flat area with 5 Coal nodes clustered together. This is also a great flat terrain for placing a Palbox if you want to set up an automated Coal base here. Just north of the Bamboo Groves fast travel point at the Anubis Dunes area, there are another 4 Coal nodes sitting right off a cliff edge.

Late Game — Deep Sand Dunes (Best Cluster)

The Deep Sand Dunes at approximately coordinates 313, 500 is the richest single Coal cluster in the game, with 8 Coal nodes in one area alongside nearby Ore nodes. Reach it by traveling north from the Duneshelter fast travel point or west from the Deep Sand Dunes fast travel point. Wild Pals here are high level, but the density of resources makes it the top choice for a late-game Coal base.

Mount Obsidian and Volcanic Area

The Mount Obsidian and surrounding volcanic region also contains Coal deposits. This is a high-level area, but it offers Coal alongside other valuable materials. Flying mount access makes it much easier to reach the elevated cliff clusters quickly without fighting through every enemy on the way up. Use a top flying mount to navigate this zone efficiently.

How to Farm Coal at Your Base

Set Up a Mining Base Near a Coal Cluster

The most efficient way to farm Coal consistently is to drop a Palbox near one of the Coal clusters above and build a base around it. Once a base is established, assign Mining Pals to the Coal nodes. They will mine automatically whenever nodes are available, keeping your supply ticking over without manual trips.

The Twilight Dunes area near -155, -90 and the Deep Sand Dunes at 313, 500 are the two best base locations for this. Keep structure foundations away from Coal node spawn points — if you build directly on top of a node, it will not regenerate.

Build the Coal Mine (Coal Quarry)

Once you hit Technology Level 53, you can unlock the Coal Mine (also called Coal Quarry) from the Ancient Technology tree for 5 Ancient Technology Points. Building one inside your base gives you a dedicated Coal production structure that Mining Pals can work at continuously, similar to the Logging Site and Stone Pit.

Because Coal nodes require Mining Work Suitability Level 3 to mine, you need capable Pals assigned to your Coal base. Here are the best options:

Yes, a small number of Pals drop Coal when defeated or captured. Notable examples include Blazamut, Menasting, and Blazamut Ryu. What Is Coal Used For in Palworld?

Coal is the backbone of mid-to-late-game crafting in Palworld. Almost everything you will want to build at this stage runs through Refined Ingots — and every Refined Ingot requires Coal.

Refined Ingot

The primary use of Coal is crafting Refined Ingots at the Improved Furnace, unlocked at Technology Level 34. The recipe is simple: 2x Coal + 2x Ore = 1x Refined Ingot. You will consume enormous quantities of these throughout the game.
