TL;DR
- There are 21 escaped zoo animals spread across 7 districts in Gotham City.
- The side quest unlocks after completing the Chapter 2 “On the Prowl” mission and the Arctic World mission with Catwoman.
- Finding 9 animals unlocks the Absolute Batman suit — a free in-game cosmetic reward.
- Finding 15 animals unlocks the Bronze Age Batgirl suit.
- All 21 are needed for 100% completion.
- Use Detective Mode (R3) to spot animals highlighted in red. Most require stealth — sneak up from behind to place the tracker without being seen.
Escaped Zoo Animals Overview
One of the most enjoyable side activities in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is the escaped zoo animal hunt. After the Gotham City Zoo suffers a breakout, animals scatter across almost every district on the map. Your job is to track them down, sneak up on them, and place a tracker so the zookeepers can retrieve them safely.
There are 21 escaped animals in total across 7 districts. They range from passive creatures like frogs and elephants to aggressive ones like bears, tigers, and lions that will charge or pounce if they spot you. The activity becomes fully available after you complete the Arctic World story mission with Catwoman. Before that point, not all animals will have spawned on the map.
The key rewards for finding animals are:
- 9 animals → unlocks the Absolute Batman suit (free, in-game, based on the Scott Snyder comic run)
- 15 animals → unlocks the Bronze Age Batgirl suit
- All 21 animals → required for 100% completion
For the full list of suits and how to unlock them, see our All Suits in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight guide.
How to Capture Escaped Zoo Animals
Before diving into locations, here are the key mechanics to understand:
- Detective Mode (R3): Activating Detective Mode highlights nearby animals in red, making them much easier to spot in dark areas and at height.
- Stealth approach: Most animals will flee or attack if they detect you. Sneak up slowly from behind to place the tracker without triggering a reaction.
- Aggressive animals: Bears, lions, leopards, tigers, and panthers will charge or pounce when spotted. If this happens, dodge their attacks. When they briefly pause or become dazed after an attack, that is your window to place the tracker.
- Skittish animals: Wolves, coyotes, and similar animals will run away rather than attack. If they bolt, use Detective Mode to track where they went, then try to circle around and approach from behind again.
- Flying animals: Parrots and toucans will fly to a different perch if startled. Approach slowly and stay low. Getting above them before approaching helps significantly.
- Passive animals: Elephants, frogs, meerkats, and sloths will not react to your presence and can be tagged freely.
All Escaped Zoo Animal Locations by District
East End – Amusement Mile (6 Animals)
Black Bear – Basketball Court
The first escaped zoo animal you encounter during the main story is actually the Black Bear, introduced during the Catwoman mission that kicks off the side quest. It is found on a basketball court opposite the Monarch Theater in Amusement Mile. The bear charges when it spots you. Dodge its attacks and wait for it to pause before placing the tracker. You can also try sneaking up from behind while it is pacing.
Five Sloths – Tube Station Billboards
Near a small tube station in Amusement Mile, five sloths are hanging around the billboard structures and steel beams. They are completely passive and will not react to you. Here is where each one is:
- One on ground level, behind a large pillar.
- One on the roof of a small building nearby.
- One on the roof of a second small building just ahead.
- One on the steel beams above — grapple up to reach it.
- One even higher on the beams — grapple up again from the previous position.
Gotham Village – Robinson Park (13 Animals)
Robinson Park is the largest single area for zoo animals in the game. This is the green district that includes the Botanical Gardens from the Poison Ivy mission — see our Poison Ivy – All Collectibles guide for more on this area. Five separate animal groups are found here.
Two Lionesses – Near the Fountain

Two lionesses are roaming near a fountain in the district. Try to sneak up from behind. If they spot you, dodge their pounces. They become briefly dazed after an attack, giving you the window to apply the tracker. Be careful that while you are tagging the first, the second does not attack you from behind.
Three Wolves – South-West by the Water

Three wolves are prowling south-west of the main park area near the waterside. These are very skittish — they will run endlessly if they see you rather than attack. Approach each wolf from behind using stealth. If one bolts, use Detective Mode to find it and try again.
Two Elephants – The Flower Park

Two elephants are in a flower-filled park in the center of the area. These are gentle and will not react at all. One is to the left of the small bridge closer to the road, and the other is to the right of the bridge. Walk up and tag them freely — no stealth needed.
Three Leopards – Outside the Botanical Gardens

Three leopards are prowling around outside the Botanical Gardens. Like lions, leopards charge and attack on sight. Sneak up from behind, or if they spot you, wait for the attack, dodge it, and tag during the daze window.
Three Polar Bears – Near the GCPD

Three polar bears are near the GCPD building in the district. Polar bears will charge when they spot you and keep running until you break line of sight. The only reliable method is stealth from behind — but be quick, as they tend to wander unpredictably even when they have not spotted you. If one bolts, hide briefly and let it stop before trying again.
Newtown (8 Animals)
Three Parrots – Near the Fountain

Three parrots are perched around a fountain in Newtown. They will fly to a new perch if startled. Approach each one slowly and from behind if possible. Here is where each parrot starts:
- One on the fountain itself.
- One up high on the Miller and Moore building to the left.
- One high up on the building opposite the Miller and Moore building.
If any fly off, switch on Detective Mode and watch where they land to track them down.
Four Frogs – The Aventine Hotel

Four small green frogs are scattered around the Aventine Hotel. These are passive and will not react to your approach. Here is where to find each one:
- One above the main hotel entrance.
- One found by grappling up and walking around the edge of the building.
- One higher still — grapple again to the side of the hotel.
- One on the railway tracks to the left of the hotel entrance.
One Panther – Outside Gotham Museum

A panther is roaming near the fountain outside Gotham Museum. It pounces three times before becoming tired or running into an obstacle — that is your window to tag it. Sneaking up from behind is also possible but difficult since the panther moves constantly. Patience is key here.
The Cauldron North – Ace Chemicals (3 Animals)
Three Red Parrots – Quillan Pharma Factory

Three red parrots are perched on the Quillan Pharma factory building, up high on the signage and chimneys. Like all parrots, approach slowly from below or behind. Here is where each one sits:
- One up high in front of the PHARMA section of the factory sign.
- One at the QUILLAN part of the sign.
- One higher up, under the left chimney stack.
Old Gotham West (2 Animals)
One Toucan – Wall Near the Theater Fountain
A toucan is perched on a wall near a fountain behind the theater in Old Gotham West. This one is fairly calm and did not fly off during testing even when approached closely. Still, move in slowly to be safe.
One Tiger – Large Statue Opposite the Theater

A tiger is prowling around a large statue directly opposite the theater. This is one of the more challenging solo animals because the statue limits your sneaking angles. The most effective approach is to slowly circle the statue and wait for the tiger’s patrol pattern to turn away from you, then close in from behind. If spotted, dodge the pounce and tag during the recovery.
Old Gotham North (7 Animals)
Three Brown Coyotes – Alleyway Near the Plaza

Three brown coyotes are running around an alleyway near the Plaza in Old Gotham North. Like wolves, they are skittish and will run rather than fight. Use the alleyways to cut around each coyote and approach from behind. If one bolts down the alley, use Detective Mode to track it and reposition.
Four Koalas – Under the Railway Lines

Four koalas are hanging around an area under raised railway lines. They are passive and will not react to you. Here is where each one is:
- One perched on a low wall.
- One on the stairs leading up to the railway lines above.
- Two higher up near the metro doors and ticket booth at the top of the stairs.
Old Gotham South (5 Animals)
One Zebra – Open Street Area

A zebra is moving through the streets of Old Gotham South. It will run away if it spots you, so approach from behind with stealth. Circle around using buildings for cover to get behind it.
Five Meerkats – Grant Zoo

Five meerkats are inside the Grant Zoo enclosure. These are completely passive and will happily let you walk up and tag them. Here is where each one sits:
- One just inside the gate to the left.
- One by a tree near a kid’s slide.
- One by another tree further along the path.
- One in the bandstand near the entrance.
- One at the very end of the area, down steps leading to the sewer.
Three Penguins – Street Level

Three penguins are waddling around the streets of Old Gotham South. They are all on ground level so no grappling is needed to find them. They are a little nervous and will shuffle away if they see you. Use the alleyways to sneak behind each one before tagging.
Tricorner (5 Animals)
Four Cobras – Construction Site

Four cobras are hiding inside a construction site opposite the GCPD in Tricorner. The construction site is a multi-level building — land at the top and work your way down, listening for hissing to help pinpoint each snake. All four are found on the top floor and the floor just beneath it. Cobras are small and dark — Detective Mode is especially useful here.
One Brown Bear – Tricorner Yards

A brown bear is roaming near the WayneTech building at Tricorner Yards, surrounded by blue shipping containers. The containers give you good cover to sneak around. Do not let the bear spot you — if it does, dodge its charge attacks and hide behind a container until it stops patrolling, then try again from behind.

Note: Some sources count group encounters as single “animals” for the purpose of the 9-animal reward threshold. The 9 required for Absolute Batman refers to 9 completed animal groups or encounters, not 9 individual animals. Once you hit the 9th encounter, the Absolute Batman suit unlocks automatically.
Absolute Batman Suit – What Is It?
The Absolute Batman suit is one of the best free in-game cosmetics you can earn through open-world play. It is based on the modern comic run by Scott Snyder with art by Nick Dragotta, launched in 2024. This version of Batman has a darker, bulkier armoured design with sharper detailing and a more intimidating silhouette compared to the base suit. It can be used in free roam, story replays, side quests, and co-op.
Unlike DLC suits or physical set bonuses, this one requires no real-world purchase and no account linking — just find 9 escaped zoo animals in Gotham. To equip it once unlocked: press Options, press R1/RB to go to Characters, press Square/X on Batman, and it will appear first in the list since it is alphabetically first.

Tips for Hunting All 21 Animals Efficiently
- Activate the Tower in each district first. This reveals all animal locations on your map before you start hunting. See our All Towers guide to unlock every district map at once.
- Do the hunt after finishing the story. Some animals require full character access and the towers cannot be activated until Chapter 4 when Batgirl joins.
- Use Detective Mode constantly. Press R3 as you approach each area. Animals glow red and are often hiding at height or in dark corners you would otherwise miss.
- Smaller animals like cobras and meerkats are easy to overlook at night. Gotham’s lighting at night makes them harder to spot visually even with Detective Mode. Take your time in those areas.
- If an animal bolts, do not chase directly. Running after a fleeing wolf or coyote triggers it to keep running. Stop, let it settle, then circle wide to come from behind.
- Do Robinson Park in one session. It has the most animals of any single area (13 across 5 groups). Knocking it all out in one run is efficient and this is where you will hit the 9-animal Absolute Batman threshold if you start with Amusement Mile first.
